DaveJL
Hello all, Here is my entry for this GB - AFV Clubs 1/48 F-5E 'Mig-28' which will be marked as a machine from VFC-13 'Fighting Saints' based out of NAS Fallon, Nevada. The squadron has flown the F-5 since 1996 but will transition to ex USAF F-16s towards the end of the year, with the F-5s being transferred to VFA-204, another adversary squadron which operates out of New Orleans. This will form part of my Top Gun/Adversary project alongside an F-14, A-4 and F/A-18E. Kit: Extras: I'll be using a Quickboost resin seat, Eduard mask and DEF models FOD inserts. Will be loaded up with a dummy AIM-9 and ACMI pod. Scheme: Should hopefully end up something like this! Cheers Dave
modelling minion
Welcome to the GB Dave, and with a great choice of both kit and scheme, I had considered this one myself. Does your boxing come with both types of nose? The box art shows the original nose but the picture is one with a shark nose. 🇺🇦

Robert Stuart
Welcome to the build, Dave, that 'Mig' scheme looks great. (Think I see both noses there, hope that's right?)

(Think I see both noses there, hope that's right?) There are indeed two noses, part N13 is for the 'Mig-28' and part E15 is for the two Aggressor options. I'm not so sure I can tell the difference between the two

I know very little about F-5s so I'll just be going with the instructions

There are probably a few other differences between the sprues (guessing, E16 & E17 are different from the N sprue equivalents).

There are a few parts called out in the instructions for the Aggressor variants, looks like the entire N sprue is for the Mig-28.

I believe it is the one for the "Mig-28", I am not in any dire need for it straight away but I have another F-5 kit other than the one I am building for the GB and it has the newer nose whereas most of the ones I want to build have the old style nose, typical isn't it. 🇺🇦

Oh man, looking forward for this one!!! Thanks mate! I've made a start. All the cockpit parts were assembled and now ready for painting: Quickboost seat: Looking through the instructions, I wasn't feeling the way AFV Club would have you assemble the horizontal stabilisers; fitting them before closing up the fuselage. This, in my view, makes painting of the metallic areas a little more difficult. Wallop. Pioneering modification I know. I moved on and pinched both an AIM-9 and ACMI pod from the spares. The former is from a Tamiya F-16, the latter from a Hasegawa weapons set. The missiles provided with the kit are AIM-9Ps and too old for my timeframe, whilst the kit's ACMI pod is a bit chunky. I'm not planning to add a centre fuel tank for this one - I've seen pictures of the jets with and without them. I hate fuel tank seams, so the latter wins hands down. I moved on and started assembling the main fuselage. The fit was so great that within a matter of hours this appeared: The airbrakes needed a little sanding to sit flush but I must say I'm very pleased with the ease of assembly. Just a little clean up here and there required. Note I also added a slight 'droop' in the ailerons, as per some reference pictures. Speaking of which, I came across this: http://www.clubhyper.com/reference/f5dp_1.htm Some nice shots there. More soon and stay safe Dave
modelling minion
Off to a great start Dave, as usual. Its quite easy to get carried away with this kit and finish the rear half quickly isn't it. The Quickboost seat is really the only extra needed with this kit. 🇺🇦
Robert Stuart
Looks like a good start, Dave. That's an interesting decision on the elevators, wish I'd seen it earlier. There is some great material in your clubhyper link, so it is copied to the reference section.
