Mercedes Benz 300 SLR n° 722 - winner 1955 Mille Miglia, driven by Sir Stirling Moss - 1:24 scale

Recommended Posts

Evening gentlemen :)

After having built 3 Mercedes Benz 300l Gullwing, the last of which representing the one that won its class under number 427 in the famous 1955 Mille Mille race, as I had in stock this old Revell kit from 1991 started and never finished more than 25 years ago, and another one intact, I naturally decided to build it, to have the series of the two victorious Mercedes in this prestigious race, and also to complete in a way a series of emblematic cars and give them a new life, in all modesty.

This model was built in a little less than 7 months, or even 5 if you exclude my two months of holidays in Canada, a record for me.

It includes nearly 600 parts in all materials, more than 480 having been added to the 115 initial ones, of which about 50 were modelled and 3D printed, and the rest scratchbuilt.

I didn't count the time spent, not being a professional modeler and not intending to sell it once it was finished, but I probably spent more than 300 hours on it, counting the time spent studying the documentation, the 3D design of the parts and the realization.

I'm quite proud of the result, despite all its imperfections, and the few big mistakes I made that I only realized too late to correct.

They will be obvious to the connoisseurs.

My Mercedes Benz 300 SL and SLR cycle doesn't end with this one, as one of these days I'm going to build the 300 SLR Uhlenhaut coupe, of which one of the two authentic examples ever built was recently sold at auction for the modest sum of 135 million euros.

Those who are interested can follow the assembly of this difficult model in the WIP section here:

Time well spent,  she's absolutely fantastic and crammed full of so many intricate little details (I've only just noticed you've added wheel weights).  looking forward to see what you're going to do with Mr Presleys BMW - Andy

That's an absolutely lovely looking model. You've spent about 5-6 times as many hours as I usually do on a build, but the end result makes that seem well worthwhile. You may not be a professional modeller, but this is a very professional looking model. It's been a good model to watch come together - you should be proud of it.

Thank you very much for this praise, Spiny.

I'm pleased you appreciated my builds, and promise to work hard for the next one, not to betray your confidence :)

This is master build. It was real pleasure to follow this build. It's clear that this kit requires lot of work. End result is real art.

Thanks a lot, @Vesa Jussila, I'll try to do even better for the 300 SLR Uhlenhaut 😉

Fabulous modelling again Thierry.

The black and white photo without the car body could easily be mistaken for the real thing.

Nick

Thank you so much for the huge appreciation, Nick.

Indeed, I posted the B&W photo because I had the vanity to think the same (I have to admit that), when I surfed on MB Archive website and saw this picture:

Indeed it really is stunning. A true labour of love, that much is obvious!

Ian

Thanks a lot, Ian, for this kind comment.

And yes, you're true: I love vintage cars, I love scale models, I love building something with my brain and my hands :)

Thankfully I’m not a connoisseur, so to me it simply looks gorgeous 😍

Thanks a lot @desert falcon, and I have to say that it's the first time I'm happy when someone is "ignorant" on a subject 😉 (Joke, obviously, I tease you )

Wow, Thierry, an amazing build. Your work on the chassis and engine is really top notch. And indeed the black and white shot does it for me too. Your persistence in replicating the smallest parts really pays off.
