Snobbery and greed in hobbies.

It is fascinating to see our own psychology happening at times... i'e, convincing ourselves we are not actually a "snob".

Similar situation with my other hobby - wristwatches.

Rolex can sell every sports watch they make immediately and grey dealers sell at a huge mark up, all because output is limited.

I'm also afflicted with this condition, but manage to keep it under control by applying a bit of "scrooge-factor" towards purchases.

Case in point. I have recently purchased a watch that is far superior to anything that Rolex can produce (in my mind...). I don't have to take it off when swimming, don't need to insure it and also don't need to keep it in the safe!

I desired a self-winding watch and discovered a very nice one which has a passing resemblance to a Rolex, called an Invicta. All the reviews I watched were positive and the movement was a seiko (which is my go-to brand). After stumping up the equivalent of 150 quid I'm a happy bunny.

Would/could/should I buy a Rolex: yes.

Will I? No.

Does this make me "Doesn't have the gear & still no idea"?

But I do know what time it is...:D

I've rarely read as much rubbish as appeared on the previous page concerning scratch builders. A certain amount of snobbery on the part of scratch builders? What complete tosh! I scratch build quite a lot, because I enjoy it and also because what I'm building isn't available in kit form. When I put my Challenger into RFI last week, a feeling of superiority was furthest from my mind. I've met and spoken to a few well known scratch builders and far from being snobbish, they were all helpful, and keen to pass on their knowledge and skills.

There have been some comments from people about their experiences in this thread, with regards to some snobbish behaviour, but I have to say, I've rarely come across that, certainly not on here. I've visited several other modelling sites, and it can become a little intense sometimes, but never because someone has scratch built something.

To be honest John I think a lot of what some call snobbery is just in some people's heads.

I've never seen any snobbery on here or other forums either but perhaps I am not jealous of anybody else's possessions or skills.

one COULD say that saying people who see snobbery are only saying that from THEM being snobbish  is being snobbish.

yep, my head hurts from trying to right that.

I dont need to give someone "good intentions" when they write post after post about how special and important they are because they use a custom made straight razor that cost 800$ and 200$ shaving soap.  Nor do i have to say it is a "self shame due to not having money to spend on hobby" when i get wee weed when the fools get snippy and demand blind obedience and devotion because i cant afford a 1500 dollar air compressor and 300$ air brush.

You've not been here long, and a lot of your posts seem to be borderline rants.  I also noticed that you tried to circumvent our swearing filter, but it caught it and made it more family friendly.  We are a family friendly forum and expect folks to post accordingly.  We ask people not to swear, use obfuscated swearing such as p**p, or P00.  We'd also like it if you'd dial back the apparent anger too, as we've had a few complaints, and some of your previous posts have been a bit.... irate seeming.  If that's not for you, we'll understand, as not everyone can or wants to be polite and respectful to their fellow modellers.  It's entirely up to you, but there are consequences for those that don't :)

Ha ha.  😆 OK I'll admit they aren't accurate or consistent and very occasionally they split like sour milk, and will not remix. Nor can you mix the earth colours with any predictability. Spraying them? Well, they smell nice when you spray them but that's about all I've managed to achieve.

However, they're widely available, they don't spill like, or cost as much as, Citadel. They don't dry up (I've had bottles in use for 15 years) You can wipe them up easily, and clean them from clothes most of the time. Some of the Game colors are astonishingly bright and unusual. They brush really well onto any primer (except their own, their primer being utter pants for me). They thin down to almost water before they fall to chemical pieces. You can blend them, glaze them, wash them, drybrush them, layer them. Brilliant for figures!

You can give them to anyone to play with knowing that they are safe, they encourage youngsters into the hobby, you can point and clean your brushes with your lips (ain't killed me yet anyway).

It's a horses for courses thing. I'm not saying that they are better overall than other brands, but they aren't so bad that I would sneer at them. It just depends what you want your paint to do for you.

Of course, for the benefit of the Heath and Safety challenged, they are not really edible and like all paint, should not be ingested. I was using literary hyperbole above to make a point. In fact they lack many essential vitamins and minerals... 🤪

I was simply attempting some humour. Vallejo have oft-discussed issues with colour accuracy, adherence and consistency (and other things, as you pointed out). For many people, they're utter pants as paint. If they work for you, more power to your elbow. We use what we use, and it's no one's business but our own.

Apologies if I inadvertently struck a nerve, or gave offence. None was meant.

On reflection, maybe 45 odd years of pointing brushes used for Humbrol enamels has had a long term effect. Nah, couldn't be.... 🤪

Ah watches I am fan of nice timepieces, I have to say that I am currently wearing a watch that cost me about a hundred quid about twenty years ago. I was tempted to take it off and smash it into a thousand pieces recently because of where it was made but I have to say that's not the fault of the watch so I have refrained. What is this watch I hear you all ask? It's called a Neptun, made by the Russian Vostok company like the one below. I have about thirty handwinding and automatic watches but none are from the usual luxury makers and I always bought them because they were weird or looked neat rather than anything else.

Although I love all my watches the Neptun is my 'Go-to' watch and in fact it hasn't been off my wrist in the last five years or so. It's an automatic, waterproof and pretty much bulletproof despite having a perspex rather than glass front. I have buffed scratches out of the face over and over again and the watch remains waterproof and has never needed adjusting which I have to say isn't something that can be said for the three or four other Russian watches I have. The chap I bought this from, a businessman who regularly travelled to Russia back around 2000 said these were made specifically for the commanders of Russian submarines and, given the quality compared to other Vostok, Raketa, Pobeda and Poljot watches I have owned I can well believe it. Most Russian watches have build quality and timekeeping fit for a Lucky bag gift. I suspect that this one will see me out and I still love the look of the thing. Just need to find another with the alternative petrol blue dial they made.

Dude ive never even tried to "circumnavigate a swearing filter" on here.. If i wants to teach the kiddos some new phrases, well i just say them.

When i replied to that posting about someone learning what it means to Feltch,  i was awful good and not give any descriptions of how to use it properly in a day to day conversation.  But seeing this posting from you, and the insinuation that I am some irate evil person makes me want to haul out with a few of my more favorite inter personal phrases for stupid people.

But I actually enjoy it when people get irate over what i say, because as a person who uses logic, it helps me realize that there are unhinged people on the forum. And those who dont like what i say, should simply reflect upon their shortcomings in life.

At risk of stepping out of line, this is a thread that has meandered more than most though that is by no means unknown on BM, almost par for the course in fact, but at every twist & turn along the way, one @masterKamera has being weighing in with comments that in New Zealand would probably get the originator of said comments labelled as a stirrer, often preceded by a common term for no. ones, of you get my drift. A less charitable individual than I might have gone beyond that with a suggestion there was trolling afoot, but not being an expert in such matters, I wouldn't know about that though there has seemed to me to be a bit of an odour permeating the thread. Just saying. <_<

The only ones who seem to think the topic has meandered, or gone off of base, are the sort of folk who would think it "reasonable" for things like this to happen in life;

1. moderators to kill a thread and make mention that they were going to be "watching people who they disagreed with based on what they posted in the thread".  Sort of like a moderator who eats a vegimite every day at work keeping tabs on those who prefer marmite and analyzing everything they post in a manner to make "I love my new bottle of glue" to be against the forum views on "shall not make posts promoting drug use"

2. Deleting someone's user account from a photo forum due to the person NOT LOGGING IN for 6 weeks... that just happened to me. Oddly not logging in in 6 weeks is "harressment".

3.  Make fun of a dyslexic person because they cant read the ingredient list on a can of hair spray

4. Realized that the things they do are apparently falling under what others point out as being snobbish, elitist, or just outright undesirable traits. Sort of like when people think they be the bomb when all hashed up, but cant explain their actions to the judge.

Meandering is not the problem here, it happens all the time on BM & unless it is a specialised thread such as the rumourmonger, designed to discuss a specific problem, then is widely tolerated. This thread HAS covered a range of topics beyond what the OP proposed, nothing unusual there, but a common property throughout has been your comments which invariably seem to have a theme of dissension about them. I'm sorry if you can't see that, if Mike has felt the need to chip in, as a result of complaints from others & if I've thought it since early in the thread, maybe you're the only one who can't see it or are the only one who is out of step here, or maybe its simply time for the Big Billy Goat gruff to show up.

Ah  yes i get it totally,,

you must be one of the gents from 2015-2017long ago on theshavingroom.co.  who felt it was funny to post photos of men "entertaining themselves" on threads when you disagreed with the poster. Or were you one of those who discussed the best way to stuff the legs of a sheep/goat/dog into your wellies to violate laws concerning acts against nature..

or are you unhappy after realizing that some folk of sound reasoning could consider you to be failing in the snobbery or elitist problem?

Goodness me, no offence taken. I’m sorry if my own attempt at a smiling review of the paints gave that impression. 😌

We all know that Vallejo are not exactly the knees of the bee, but I wanted to stick up for the little fellows against unfounded and unsupported accusations (not from you of course  🙂). The paints  are a bit ‘pants’ but they are at least clean and fragrant ones fresh off the line. 🙂

That’s why my children made me switch to acrylics, they thought I might die from enamel and lacquer poisoning. That inadvertently began a decades long struggle to paint properly with ‘watercolours’. Bah!

Like you I do a lot of scratchbuilding and if anyone took the time to talk to me they would find out early on that I in no way speak down from a pedastel, in fact, I see every one of my builds as inperfect and I will/do often point out these facts. I think the snobbery is most extreme if these modellers do not pass on their methods or tips and tricks that make the model what it is, but also any pitfalls on the way that may be missed by others. I love passing this info on, why would you not?

Again I have to agree with you on the point that I have met none of these people as yet so I don't understand the basis of their argument but then again maybe I have been lucky, who knows!

Speaking as one who has been on the wrong end of one mods decisions, I think that if you continue like this, you will end up on an enforced holiday, or worse. Regardless of what you (or I or anyone else) think, in the end it's their site, their rules, their decision is final, and if you want to remain on here, you have just got to accept it. And before you start leveling any accusations about shaving (???) or worse still, unnatural practices, I can assure you that of all the sites which I have been a member of, nothing remotely like that has occurred.

Now, take a deep breath, vent your spleen into the ether, and walk away from your computer. You know it makes sense.

Ah, that'll be were I went wrong - no kids to care about me. Oh well, I'll just keep on going the way I am, enamels and lacquer sans protection. And I'll use OLD enamels, too, you know, the proper ones what've got lead and stuff in 'em.

(You know what they say - if you're not livin' on the edge, you're takin' up too much space.)

This thread reminds me of the old John Cleese,  Ronnie Barker and Ronnie Corbett  sketch on "That was the week that was". (If I'm  wrong here please put me right.)

True. It’s a sociological debate on the class system and its replacement by a graduated plutocracy. A debate running since the Renaissance.

Well, that gives them one possible use. Anything else?

They work very well, but they are not the same as enamel paint.    Expect them to be and they will be 'useless'

I brush them, as do others on here, but you need to know how they work.  Small flat brush, thin coats, but as they dry fast, you can do that quickly.  Yes, they are fragile, and I find they work best over a thin primercoat of Tamiya acrylic which has a bit more 'bite' , as yes, they do not stick to plastic but form a thin film.   The fragility ceases to be a problem once varnished.

This is all brush painted with Vallejo Model Color (though i did have to mix the colours)  except the UC legs and tyres which are Tamiya.

50620277

Absolutely  they won't do some thing older enamels will do,  and i have plenty of old kits and bits done in those, and they were very forgiving, tough one coat finish.... paint white over black,   but unless I want to go hunting on ebay for vintage paint,  they are unavailable now.

but I also don't have to deal with a tiresome clean up, I just used some oil paint on a neighbours window,  and that reminded me why I avoid them if possible.   They started to me make feel sick, and I was working outside.

I do use lighter fuel,  but in tiny amount, and it does not have the same heavy odour.

But, again, this is why I have my sig line.  I have seen several members here complain about acrylics,   in the same way I know a painter and decorator who does not like acrylics, while they are my default decorating choice.

Hope of interest.
