I Wasn't Expecting to be Here, Revell/Monogram Do 17 Z-2 +FINISHED+

Recommended Posts

Well, this is a surprise

I hadn't planned to take part in this GB, but due to an unexpected turn of events in the Revell-o-Gram GB, a kit I thought inedible illegible inelligible is in fact OK

Thus, I find myself with a Do 17 in the vicinty of the workbench

Pressure from The Management @vppelt68 pointed me in the direction of it's rightful residence, so here we are

Dornier

It'll be an OOB build using thes bits of plastic

Monogram

Monogram

And these decals

Monogram

I think I'll go against my norm and build it wheels up to go on the stand

Monogram

How long is there left in the GB ....... :frantic:

At first glance of the sprue I thought there might have been parts for a little known AWACS version of the Do-217!

I spent a lot of the (short) time I have available cleaning up the crew and very basic cockpit

They've now been primed and covered in RLM02 (not the pilots)

Saturday progress

I need to let that dry off.  The instructions have a paper cutout for the IP but fortunately there's a decal thses days, so that will go on after a quick coat of clear.

Paint up the pilots then I can button 'er up.

Well at least you get a full crew! My 217K only has 3 men/seats, which was correct for the E version but a fourth crew member was added when extra guns were provided in the rear canopy as in the 17Z and later versions. When I first came across this boxing I thought it was probably the old Frog kit, but apparently not.  My Monogram Tigercat had a paper I/P as well, but as it was an original there was no dec to replace it.

True, but it means there are 4 peeps to paint :(

Speaking of which...

I managed a little bench-time todat so the crew were given some dabs of paint to make them look pilotey

I also splashed a little paint in the cockpit to make it look slightly cockpitty

Do17 Monday

Good enough for the ceiling

I went to stick the decals on the IP when I noticed a problem. I had only painted one side, the other being bare primer. The dacals were already in the water 😬

Do17 Monday

It'll have to do. You'll never notice once the dust starts accumulating on the greenhouse

In the immortal words othe Bard Charlie Brown, "Oh, good grief"

2 weeks left in the GB and I've not stuck any plastic together. :frantic:

This is what comes of being conscripted persuaded to join late in the day :poke:

Glue at the ready, shall we begin

Start with the cockpit internals

Do17

Do17

Then stick the fuselage halves together

Do17

It's lining up quite well considering the age of the kit

On to the wings, which will need a hacksaw to get through those sprue gates ....:hmmm:

Do17

Don't worry, I didn't :)

It's starting to take shape.

Do17

The joints will need a bit of tidy-up but don't look too bad

It will be in-flight, hence the stand at the back of the picture. It'll save some time if I don't need to stick on the u/c

Sticking more bits of the plane together today

Saturday

The fuselage went together well. The same can't he said for the wings

It's not going to be a museum kit, unless they have a chamber of horrors

Yay, a 2 week extension

I might get this thing completed

Most of the remaining bits have been stuck on and the plane's been primed. For some reason, I have no photos

On to the colouring-in painting

I've sprayed the underside RLM65

Just ignore the huge gaps everywhere, I'm going to...

Progress

That was Thursday

Today, I masked the underside and covered the top half with RLM71

Progress

I'll let that dry off, then on to masking for the camo and spraying with RLM70

I spent the morning masking up for the RLM70 which then was sprayed on

Sunday update

Next up was the yellow on the wings

Sunday update

They may be a bit narrow, never mind

And then unmasked

Sunday update

It'll do

Thanks everyone

Time to get some stickers stucked

1 week left

The numbering on the decal sheet doesn't seem to totally match the numbers on the instructions so I'll be winging it a little

Also .......

I'll just say this now ............

I hate stencils :swear:

Decals finished

This is the same pic I posted in the VW Egg Girls thread

1 week left

Did I mention  I hate stencils? :swear:

There are a few errors due to me having the instructions oriented incorrectly

And there's also quite a bit of silvering which I hope will disappear with MicroSol (but probably won't)

Onwards and upwards

Allrighty, I'm calling this one done :yahoo:

20220731_165519

Not my best work, it certainly wouldn't win any prizes. It's passable and it was (mostly) fun, which is the whole point after all.

Paints by Vallejo Model Air, primer by Halfords, glue by Tamiya, coffee by the gallon.

20220731_165451

The silvering on the decals didn't disappear with MicroSol or the flat coat, but it's not too obvious as long as you're not actually looking at the model

I'll post up some gallery pics soon(ish)

Thanks to @vppelt68 for persuading me to take part at the last minute and to everyone else who posted likes or comments in the thread, or even just followed along
