Splendid idea. I wouldn't have space in 1:144 for something like that. Do you have a 'Lancaster diorama' room ?

 

Unfortunately you're not the first to post that all the transparencies weren't delivered intact. From other comments I think that's a packaging problem. Good luck with replacing yours.

Hello All,

Firstly, may I say; God Rest Her Majesty and God Save The King! 

 

Apologies everyone on the time between posts, I hope this post makes up and explains the time between posts...

Plus work has been well, a swear word...

 

After watching Nigels Build Videos, I decided to start with the Business End and build the Lanc's around the Bomb Bays.

 

So, I made a trip to Duxford and paid for a trip around their Airspace Lancaster Mk.X including a really good look in the Bomb Bay.

I also took a trip to the Avro Museum and finally I am in possession of Digital Copies of the Lancaster Maintenance and Parts Catalogues.

 

Plenty of research to start then!

 

After studying the Kit, several issues became apparent.

Now, I am not going to spend the whole of this thread gushing about the shear injection moulding brilliance of this kit but it is clear that the limitations of this kit is the Injection Moulding Process itself...

 

 

The same issues can be said for the bomb bay piping;

 

 

There are also some missing details (see below);

 

 

 

After some soul searching and short of taking the birch to myself, I decided on some serious pipe and cabling fatigue;

 

• I stripped back everything in the Bomb Bay and discarded the piping.
• Made some bespoke photo etch for all three bomb bays
• The Parts Lists told which pipes where alloy, steel etc.
• Re-cabled the whole thing

 

 

 

 

 

Then the usual, primer, steel, airframe aluminium coats, varnishing and here you go;

 

Firstly here is the B.1;

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Here is the Lancaster B.III;

 

The Gearbox and Bracing Frame is from Iconair, the rest is scratch built

 

 

 

 

This is the back end deflector cowl and as with the rest of the kit, I decided to take the Iconair and can the surface

 

 

 

Here it is with the cowling on; note I had to widen it to fit this kit;

 

 

Finally here is the Lancaster B.I (Special);

 

The complete cowling is 3D Printed from using the HK Models Kit as a basis and then size tweaked;

 

 

Decided on bespoke photoetch to give a better representation of the service covers on the aircraft;

 

 

All hand drilled and riveted, couldn't resist a bit of battle damage and patching too 😉

Iconicair is a modelling company run by Graham French, he produces whole kits mostly if not exclusively in 1/32 scale such as the Supermarine Attacker, but also fortunately items such as bomb trolleys and other airfield equipment, all to an extraordinarily high standard in resin.

Hello all,

Bit of an update for you; I have, at long last, on the third attempt, received the replacement, intact clear sprues!

 

Based on a 6 week delivery time from China;

 

The first set were the wrong sprues...

The second set were the correct sprues but these too arrived damaged

 

Third time lucky!

 

Four months later, I now have more spare sprues than I can wave a stick at!

 

 

I will keep you posted but I am talking to a specialist 3D Printing Company who can do me a 'clearer' version of the canopy and turrets...

Hi everyone,

I wouldn't normally post something like this as it is quite a small assembly but when you do three of them, it kind of becomes a thing...

 

Completed the Navigators and Radio Operators Stations;

 

UK Aircraft Explored on Youtube has been invaluable in working out the cable runs and types.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Some points for you;

 

• There are four materials that go to make up the shared table;
• - Aluminium Main Construction
• - Hard Dark Wood for the Radio Operators Compartment Hinged Flap and the Navigators Document Tidy
• - Light, Grained Wood for the Navigators Map Station Area
• - Brass Strip Guide for the Adjustable Measuring Angle
• Couldn't resist a pin up...
• Because none of my Lanc's have the H2S Ground Radar System, The Fishpond Indicators supplied for the kit are not fitted
• I used Fag Packet Cellophane to mimic the plastic sleeve the maps were placed in to allow the Navigator to crayon all over them and then reuse them...

 

As I have said, The Lancaster B.I will be undergoing maintenance on my table so I have Red Tagged the Radio Receiver and Transmitter for strip down and test

Also disconnected the Power Leads and Morse Code Cables

 

 

 

Please note the Lancaster B.III (Special) Upkeep Mine Revolutions Counter for the Crew

 

 

 

On a Side note, I have also completed the first of the vehicles for my Diorama;

Here is the Bomb Trolley Type E for the Upkeep Mine from Iconicair

Hello all,

For those who celebrate it, I hope you all had a pleasant Christmas Holiday.

 

Thought I would give you an update to prove I am still alive...

 

Now, I have so far, not had a single issue with this kit but with my obsession with cabling up and piping, the kit does flag up a small issue and this is depth.

 

The whole fuselage internal is a solid moulded piece and this is great but does not allow for piping between the spars.

 

 

 

 

So, I got rid of the assembly and started from scratch!

 

 

Here is the detail in the Dambuster Model as it shows the holes left with the Bomb Aiming Kit removed for Chastise;

 

 

I had to play around with the Longerons on the nose section to make them look straight from the nose to aft.

More on this later,,,

 

 

 

In other news;

 

Electrics are beginning to appear;

 

 

 

Cockpit Floor etc, are done;

 

 

Seats and Controls Columns are done.

The one folded up is the standard in maintenance...

This sounds a superb project but is it just me that's frustrated by the pictures not loading?

 

I'm on a PC using Windows 10 and all I'm getting is link addresses that go to hobbyphoto but don't load.

 

Any help appreciated.

I hope it's ok to ask: when you form a fuselage vertical rib, are my eyes deceiving me, or is it correct to say they are H shaped, formed by having 2 brass flat strips parallel with the fuselage, with the middle piece of the rib cut out of plastic sheet into the correct shape, then glued at 90 degrees between the 2 brass strips?

Pretty much;

 

 

• All of the parts are photo etched bespoke from my drawings
• I lightly tack the main section to the wall so I can manipulate to get vertical and straight
• Then add the two side strips to form the T Section; then run some Zap A Gap down to fill gaps to make them look as one
• Finally, the grooved top piece is added after a slight role to curve the parts; more so of course at the back.

For the pure amongst us, I know for of the main joining sections were 'C' Sections but thought that a step too far, particularly as two will not be really seen at the back...

Ah yes: Kitsworld can be a bit patchy at times but it's nice to have period and recent warbird versions of the same scheme. I suspect that some won't realise however...
