Monogram 1/24 '64 Pontiac GTO

Recommended Posts

You can't have a Revell/Monogram GB without some American muscle so for my second build I've got what is arguably the daddy of them all, the 1964 Pontiac GTO. Introduced as an option package on the mid sized Pontiac Le Mans the GTO replaced the standard 326c.i. (5.3 litre) V8 with the 389c.i. (6.4 litre) V8 from the larger Catalina along with a manual transmission, stiffer springs and wider tyres. With the optional tri-power carburation as depicted in the kit it was rated at 348hp, which must have been fun with drum brakes all round.

The kit was originally issued in 1985 and this is a 1998 reissue, by which time it had become a 2 'n 1 kit with an optional street machine version.

I'll be building the stock version, colour to be confirmed.

Watching with

Unlike the Pontiac sales dept, which in 1964 ran a 421 cu.in. tri-power engine stating it was a 389 in "the blue car" and "the red car" that the press got to test drive, you can do vice versa in your build . V-P

Little GTO, you're really lookin' fine
Three deuces and a four-speed and a 389
Listen to her tachin' up now, listen to her whine,
C'mon and turn it on, wind it up, blow it out GTO.

Ronnie and the Daytonas summed the whole thing up perfectly.

Progress has been slow but I have been working on it over the past couple of months. The floor was sprayed matt black, the fuel tank painted steel and the front suspension added.

The combined exhaust/rear axle part had a lot of seams that needed removing but after finally getting around to removing them the other suspension parts were added and the completed sub assembly painted.

This was fitted to the floor pan, along with the engine. Once the wheels were added I had a rolling chassis.

Having looked online for body colours I saw a turquoise example so, as I had a can of spray paint in a similar shade the body has been painted. The engine bay has been painted black as per the real car.

It isn't particularly shiny at the moment but hopefully some clear should sort that out. Next I have to decide on an interior colour.

Nice to see a bit of progress on the GTO. Monogram did the car proud all those years ago.

Tony Dickson, of Money Hungry Camero fame, had a '63 GTO coupe at his shop that he used to race at Santa Pod. The car had sat for some time but I still lusted after it. The bit that made me go proper wobbly at the knees was the Royal Bobcat decal in the window. The devil is in the details.

I think the styling of the GTO started really good, and just kept getting better over the years. Right up until Pontiac drove it over a cliff in '71. Fantastic times that we won't see again.
