M12 GMC "Fáfnir never sleeps..."

Recommended Posts

Hello folks

Thanks in advance for your comments - I really appreciate it!
I am continuing with the weathering of the M12.
Today's pictures show further steps, mainly to give the surfaces different colour shades and to emphasize the angular shape of the body.
Now the rough work is done and the details can be worked on.

To give the gun more contour, I did a pinwash and painted the protruding edges dry with a mixture of light grey and sand coloured oil paint.

The floor is given a colour that stands out from the rest.

At the ends of the front track fenders you can (hopefully) see the light effect with light oil colours.

In addition, the edges of the rubber pads were brightened.

Unwanted shine will be removed later with pigments.

Corners and edges were also painted dry.
For further effects, I worked on the borders of the hatches with oil paint.

If you stroke the surface without pressure and with almost no paint on the brush, the steel structure becomes clearly visible.

In this view you can see that I also lightened the barrel above.
This also shows the rounding better.

With targeted dry painting, you can give a dark model more volume without changing the base colour and still make it appear lighter.
In my experience, however, this only works best with enamel or oil paint.

Hm..., I guess you can see that I am a child of the Verlinden era 😁

See you!

Hello folks

Thanks for your kind comments!

Today I want to share with you again some pictures of the M12.
The main work is done and in the next few days I hope to be done with everything.
I still need to do some work on the water effects, after that the model will be weathered together in the ground.
At the moment I haven't applied any dirt or dust etc except for the running gear, the figures also need to be weathered to fit the scene.
I had to change the driver, because I melted the goggles by accidentally using LT.
The new head of RM is also very good and the cigar is a cool detail.
Enough words and enjoy the pictures.

The signs are self-made and partly from Miniart.

This sign designed on PC glued on thin aluminum foil.

New idler pulleys, the ones from the kit were not usable.

Unfortunately, without protective cover, but I simply lacked the patience.

Working like on a sailing ship.

Preparation for the water.

The puddles are done, the water surface gets small waves later.

Test setup to see if the tracks rest on the ground without an air gap.

Hello folks

Today there are again a few pictures of the M12.
The weathering is 90% complete with the dirt and the accessories are almost in place.
The vignette is also finished - but I still have doubts if the size fits.

At the moment I'm too busy with the GB, but I think I'll present you a result this year.

Oil stains etc. will come later...

All effects were made with enamel and oil colors.

Later, everything is blended with the base.

Just stunning. All of it. All of the details. That idea for the stolen winch jack, the pin up poster and lugar. The weathering is fantastic, especially like the digger/brace shovel at the rear, weathering, just looks real and used.

I know you used enamels and oils to achieve all but I’ve been trying to make the tied black mark like the one on the side between the white star and usa decal, how did you do that? I mean when I go to try that I make it, it’s too thin and it rolls of, doesn’t pool like that . Is that type of stain made by enamels? Sorry for the question but it’s that type of small but effective detail that makes it  so good.

First of all thank you for your comment 🙂

Actually, it's quite simple.
You wet the area you want to stain with enamel thinner (because it dries slower) and then apply a dark color heavily thinned in this case with lighter fluid (dries very quickly).
The color can spread well on the enamel base and the fast drying of the lighter fluid forms the edge.
So that nothing runs down uncontrollably, simply hold the model horizontally.
With a hair dryer you can accelerate the drying process and get very unsightly borders 🤓
This works with oil stains just as well as dusty water stains etc.

Hopefully I have explained it clearly, but with a little trial and error (on an old model) it will work.
Also, you can quickly undo all enamel effects with a clean brush 😁

Aaahhh so that’s how you do it! That is genius. Thank you so much. I was looking for quite a while to see how this was done.

Very minor detail. Your M1 carbine has a bayonet lug under the barrel. This was a post war/Korean War addition. You see it a lot in War Movies, as all the WW2 rifles were modified after the war and few genuine unmodified ones remain.
