Marklo
Questions for the forum:/ 1. is the undersurface of Butch II nmf or light grey? 2. should there be a Butch II marking on both sides or just the Left?

If I was a betting man Id say neutral grey. Looking at photo’s here, http://www.littlefriends.co.uk/353rd-fighter-group/ Looks like P-47’s in the summer of ‘44 were still wearing neutral grey along with invasion stripes. I found a good example with “Lucky” on page 5. Edited August 10, 2022 by Corsairfoxfouruncle
Marklo
A bit of rough masking and some rattle can white for the invasion stripes. I’ll mask off the white more precisely before I spray the light gray. found this very handy guide in the web. Something thats stopped me from doing checkers very often. The only suggestion I have is one Ive thought about using myself. You will need a fine drafting pencil, flexible straight edge and tape cut into perfect squares/diamonds. I would use the pencil to layout very faint lines in the pattern. Then use pre-cut tape to fill the pattern. A lot of work but I think thats your best bet.
Marklo
Yes I think I’m edging in that direction.
GAF
As to the checkerboard, take it slow and you'll find it goes quicker. I try to steer away from aircraft with complex patterns, especially curved ones. Gary
Marklo
Not going too well I have about a 1mm layer of paint and it’s not fully cured. So going to strip it back and start again.
Marklo
Camo on looking good. not so good on the cowling. I managed to partially melt one side while flashing off layers of pink undercoat. Still nothing a bit of filler won’t fix.

Marklo
After a lot of fiddling with my airbrush and switching to my iwata; black on. Happy with the stripes, last time I painted invasion stripes on my 1/144 Horsa it was a nightmare. Nearly back at the races with the cowling. One last sand and we’re ready for primer again.

Yeah they can be, but you need to remember they were never perfect to begin with. Most were applied by hand using brush, rags, or even mops.
Marklo
Cowling now ready for masking. I decided to fit the undercarriage, only to realise I couldn’t find the oleos, then then it dawned on me that I may not have gotten them in the kit at all, so nothing else for it out with the brass rod and tube and scratch a pair…

Marklo
New oleos in progress. A bit of fettling needed once the glue sets Then a bit of detailing, scissor links brake lines etc.. Might get this one finished by next week, not a huge amount of work left. Edited August 18, 2022 by Marklo
