Recommended Posts

Hi all and I'm going to take the plunge with this one.

I love how they put a sticker 'a' on the box to fix the spelling of 'Ultre' 😬  (I peeled it off)

Quick look inside.

I've read a couple of other build threads on this one so know what to expect - build will be OOB so!

You can read more about this fascinating aircraft here.

Thanks for looking and good luck with your builds!

Happy modelling,

Dermot

Welcome to the GB Dermot.

I am very glad that you decided to join us with the F-107, it really is a most unusual and fascinating aircraft and I have every confidence that you will make a stunning model from the box.

Really looking forward to this one.

Thanks all and finally underway. Will be OOB.

Cockpit fitted and nose weights added just in case..

A quick test-fit showed the airbrakes fell into their recesses a little so backed with some styrene.

Fuselage and wings dry-fitted for now - looks very different!

Thanks all, sorry for not posting in a while - was on holidays and other life stuff..

The intake is on (not a great fit, more on that again) and started on the canopy parts which are in three pieces. The front and rear fit great but not the middle..

But then if you fit the middle part up against the rear part, they fit great...but not the front!

So will probably end up cutting off some of the front coaming so the front piece can sit further forward.

Thanks for looking, all the best,

Dermot

Thanks everyone.
Here's some more on the intake - it's not quite tall enough and a bit undersized  in width across the fuselage. Oh well, fixing as best I can with some plasticard shims underneath and trying to fill on the sides.

And now ready for some primer.

Looking very stealthy! A couple of areas to attend to but mostly happy with that!

Odd about the fit of that intake - mine was OK for height and width, but was approx 1mm too short front to rear. Filled with a shim, so no worries, but I wonder where the difference lies.

Hello all and here's the latest on the Super Duper Sabre..

A couple of light coats of Tamiya Silver X-11. I've never done a natural metal scheme before and the finish was a little rough. But after I let it dry for a couple of days, I gave it a gentle polish with an old cotton t-shirt which seemed to help smooth it out a bit.

Then started masking for the red areas, none of which are provided as decals..

Used some Post-it notes as I was running short on masking tape.. Using the tail as a guide, I enlarged the decal plan in the kit on a photocopier to help with the masking.

A coat of flat white to help with the red

And then a couple of misted coats of Tamiya Flat Red XF-7. Some areas will need to be fixed and tidied up - I'm also not sure the side 'zap' is high enough on the fuselage.. But I'm mostly happy with it and will be fine from 6 feet away.

Thanks for looking.

Thanks all,

Paint all tidied up and on to masking the rear where the panels look a different colour - heat staining ?

My first time trying effects with Tamiya Smoke and happy with that.

Then with another gloss coat, started on the decals. I'm going with s/n 55-120 which flew with NASA from 1957-59. I'm not 100% sure she carried the 'US AIR FORCE' name at the same time but too late now.. 🙄 I'm also adding some extra stencils from the spares as there's very few on the kit decals.

Home stretch so hoping to make the end of the GB!

Thanks for looking, happy modelling.
