First thing first, paint the cockpit side walls light gray.

52141141883_d1e62c437e_c.jpg

This starts off much like the -102 I just finished, Paint the inside then glue the halves together with the nose bay and cockpit added later.

52141122596_acb220e867_c.jpg

The Voodoo is a rather large aircraft.. The seam fit is the best I've seen in a while. I'll have to add a little bit of filler but not much.

52141608360_7e51be3469_c.jpg

I'll let this dry overnight then sand down and begin the cockpit.

Great to have you back in the GB Loren.

The Voodoo is a great looking aircraft and the Monogram kit is, in my opinion, one of their best, I just wish that they had done the RF-101 A/C as well as the B.

I have no doubt that this will be at least as good as your Deuce and I am very much looking forward to watching this one.

I'll agree there Craig. The only way to get a decent RF-101 In 1/48 is to get  the Koster conversion(If you can find it, affordably). I didn't care for the Kitty Hawk version.

Of course, like the Deuce, this has raised panel line as well(Groan)

Yeah, I haven't been able to find one yet and I didn't get the Kitty Hawk one when it was available.

There is one on Evilbay for a starting bid of $50. It will be interesting to see how far up it goes considering the set was like $14 new originally.

Moving along now that the seams are set, I started on the cockpit tub. As thing seem to happen of late, I managed to delete the progress of the tub up to installation. But it went as follows...

GAve everything a base coat of light gull gray, The instrument panels once the gray dried I used a toothpick to paint the dials in black along with the side panels. Once those were dry I used a silver pencil to pick out the detail. The radar screens which you can see now, I painted with Mirror and then gave the screens a coat of Transparent orange. Almost all the static images of the cockpit showed the screens a red or orange tint., and gave everything a dark wash to bring out the details that you really can't see.

Note to self: Stop doing 3 different build on 2 different GBs. Keeps the aggravating errors down:wall:

Anywhoo. I added the nose gear bay and like the tub a dark wash same with the main gear bays and the flaps.

Time to add the wings. This is the one area of the build that is sorely lacking. The fit of the upper part of the wings left a significant gap that required filling with thin rod before masking off and filling with my white filler.

52149764834_9a036c702e_c.jpg

No matter how much I sanded and clamped it was not going to be any where near a tight fit. the underneath two small areas at the front near the missile bays.

The missile bay is one of those swiveling contraptions with Falcons on one side and Genie missiles on the other. I've opted for showing just one side only, the Genies. The panel wanted to swing too freely. So I glued it in place.

As with the fuselage I masked off the  join and filled with my white filler.

52153734883_d637145bb9_c.jpg

I let these dry overnight then sanded down smooth.

52153734928_4197f4b000_c.jpg

Then attached the nose section. As per normal for me I took some kids modelling clay and pressed into the tip and filled half way with bb's then put another layer of clay to seal everything up.

Great thing about the clay is it never shrinks or dries out. So nothings going to shift.

Like the -102 That I just did,, I'm Doing a pre-shading. The 101 also being a National Guard craft is(or was) well cared for. And since this also has raised panel lines I'll do the same also with them using a pencil to lightly highlight. Although, had I thought of it instead of the black, I should have used a medium or darker gray  like one would do as an alternative highlighting on the dials , when the top coat dries lightly sand the top coat away from the panel lines revealing the gray underneath. I would do it now but the black I believe will be too dark. But since I'm doing the -106 next(tentatively) And its the same raised lines as this, I'll try that then.

52153727936_0968d04d21_c.jpg

After the black dried I gave everything a couple of light coats of ADC gray.

52153734978_d6556672e0_c.jpg

The picture doesn't really show it but there are tonal differences. After this dried then I gave everything a couple of coats of gloss lacquer to seal it up.

So there you have it, a lot but not a lot. tomorrow I'll mask off for the nose, anti-glare shield, area aft of the engines and give the tail a coat of white in anticipation of the blue. So until then, Stay Safe Stay healthy, and if it's anything like the heat here, definitely be COOL!

Aside from the wing issues, it has been a a rather casual walk in the park. Too bad most builds don't go this way. I was hoping to be further along than I am, but I've been "fighting " the Japanese on another GB. Too much time and too few subjects.... wait strike that, reverse it. Too many subjects not enough time. There that better:clap2:

  • 2 weeks later...

Letting that all set a day or so while working on other builds. I then started work on the Exhaust and Metallic backside.

52178363344_6806782baa_c.jpg

52178606510_d84dc6702e_c.jpg

Various shades of AK titanium, Alclad II Pale burnt Metal, Steel, Duraluminum, and MM Burnt Metal to give some variance in shades, and a light coat of Alclad II Hot Metal Blue and Sepia.

After that I travelled to the fron to paint the radome and anti-glade shield flat black. The upper sensor I gave a coat of Mirror then some Tamiya Smoke to give the lens a subdued look.

52178363269_a9a4e5cc1d_c.jpg

At the same time I did the same thing to the upper and lower collision lights and wing tip nav lights

The red is Tamiya Transparent Red.

Finished adding the cockpit windscreen and bang seats

52177088287_fa1354fa87_c.jpg

52178120423_c916dd86dd_c.jpg

the striping on the windscreen I used a needle tipped marker to get the fine lines, Making a straight line with shaky hands is not always easy.

Time to add some stickers.

Because of the age of the decals I did a test with one of the decals for another bird. Good thing I did, for it shattered. So the whole sheet got a few cots of clear lacquer to stabilize everything.  I did get a slight crinkle effect on a couple of the decals, a reaction to the lacquer, but is still acceptable.

I'll let these dry overnight then give everything a good gloss coat and finish adding the last of the bits. Then it's off to the -101 Gallery for inspection.

And there you have it. No a bad little build. Although the model is  larger than I expected. It all went together with out much drama. So thanks for following along my little Voodoo.

Granted it wasn't much in the Dark Arts , like a vac, but pleasant none the less. Thanks for all  the comments, suggestions and encouragements. I'll get this up into the -101 Gallery shortly, then start another Century mark, or at least a place holder. I still have another build to finish and a few older builds from years gone by that are in need of a good cleaning and refurbishment before commencing another subject. So until then Stay Safe, Stay healthy, definitely stay Cool, and by all means.... Model On!:pilot:
