109 fan
The Gigants have wandered off into temporary hibernation. That is a big project and it will be prone to occasional lapses of focus. Sooo, why not crack out a few 109s. The first is a Tamiya 109 G-6 with a very slight modification. This plane had the Erla starboard cowl with its extra bump and vent. I clipped the addition from a Hobby Boss kit and shaped it to fit the Tamiya gun bump. The vent is a section of stretched sprue cut at an angle. I'm always looking for the unusual in 109 schemes (not really a challenge) and found a gem. It shouldn't be difficult, but are there any guesses out there? It's not German, but that's obvious. Bonus points for identifying the specific aircraft. 298659F2-37D6-477A-9EAC-A7184AED7E57_1_201_a by Barry Numerick, on Flickr 7714102D-F362-4877-8F8C-4065D25AD0CF_1_201_a by Barry Numerick, on Flickr 6EE80A32-BCFB-4E23-B47E-43BF65716765_1_201_a by Barry Numerick, on Flickr
Sturmovik
I'm guessing it'll be a Finnish aircraft because of the circular, darker colour over the wings.
109 fan
That's right. Now for the bonus round; which one? A clue. it's one of the most outlandishly marked 109s.

kapteenipirk
Would have also guessed a Finnish BF-109. As for the specific aircraft... i would guess... ... MT-508 in it's racing livery.
109 fan
Ding, ding, ding; we have a winner!! Some additional progress has been made. 1EE90A02-6B44-4908-915D-24F184873B5C_1_201_a by Barry Numerick, on Flickr F429A221-AF78-4A6D-95A5-09D9D5CD2D7E_1_201_a by Barry Numerick, on Flickr I will weather the bird at this time. Since the racing markings were applied later, they will go on after the oil wash and then lightly weathered separately.
109 fan
These post-war Finnish 109s were very beaten up and ratty looking. So I will weather the model heavily before adding the adding the race markings. They were added much later in the plane's life and would not show the same extent of wear as the rest of the airframe. I have started this on the fuselage using a mixture of raw umber and medium grey oil paints. Here's where she stands at the moment. 831A680C-EB7E-4315-8617-8BBCB570FAAC_1_201_a by Barry Numerick, on Flickr 080CB36E-B3C6-49CE-A183-C34E3A1BAFDE_1_201_a by Barry Numerick, on Flickr 7FE0D54F-63B5-4C93-B885-F918F3562362_1_201_a by Barry Numerick, on Flickr A4433AC9-5116-4941-AAFC-1E30D83E3675_1_201_a by Barry Numerick, on Flickr
109 fan
Weathering continues on the 109. As I've said, these birds were more weatherbeaten than any others that I have seen. At this point the wings and undersurfaces have gotten the oil paint treatment which completes that phase of the build. 88044723-18E4-4513-8859-0F27E6E405D3_1_201_a by Barry Numerick, on Flickr 6345C1A2-A341-4C9E-BF84-9F5219396290_1_201_a by Barry Numerick, on Flickr 157E2946-ED2A-491D-A90D-5E1C9802CCC4_1_201_a by Barry Numerick, on Flickr D4274134-51E5-41DB-B3E4-825BBF6C0EF4_1_201_a by Barry Numerick, on Flickr EE1A577A-910C-4F55-A194-F2D6F92FDA4C_1_201_a by Barry Numerick, on Flickr Since these photos were taken I have added the airshow marking and much of the careful mottling and weathering is covered up forever. More soon.
109 fan
The final markings are on. I am very pleased with these Special Hobby kit decals. They are very thin and conform well using Micro Sol and Set. They are weathered, but to a lesser extent to contrast with the permanent markings. 9C46E2E0-8C8E-4FD3-B9BC-3EA4C44EB2D6_1_201_a by Barry Numerick, on Flickr 04C43307-6406-4474-B53D-BDDC06757C99_1_201_a by Barry Numerick, on Flickr
cpoud117
Very impressive paint work given the size of that thing in 1/72. That spinner decal looks like a pain to apply correctly, best of luck with it.
109 fan
A bit more progress to report. I applied another flat coat to to dull things down. Also sprayed the exhaust stains and for once stopped when I thought I should be adding more. Always a good axiom, when you want to add just a bit more...stop! The canopy masks were removed and the tall tailwheel strut from a Fine Molds Bf 109 G-10 was attached. Also the trop filter, which was common to Finnish 109s was attached. This is a very nicely detailed QuickBoost piece. The incredibly tiny support arms will be added next. Cpoud117, the spiral spinner decal is not that difficult to apply; it just take a huge amount of patience and liberal applications of Micro-Sol. 18D2CD07-41CB-4590-8D04-6124FD356062_1_201_a by Barry Numerick, on Flickr 389D4682-31A1-4884-BED5-6AA8497EFB05_1_201_a by Barry Numerick, on Flickr B3635732-97DB-4613-A542-04E46DF42976_1_201_a by Barry Numerick, on Flickr EFBCF74A-F32B-4955-958C-7D43A1018D62_1_201_a by Barry Numerick, on Flickr

Duncan B
Nice work Barry, as we have come to expect from you. I still want to know where you get those 500ml pots of Mr Hobby paint that you use as a stand for your 1/32 scale builds though 😄. ModelingEdmontonian
I'm really enjoying this build, sorry I haven't commented yet! I'm working on a post-war Finnish G-6 as part of my "Minor Gustavs" project, but yours is definitely more colourful than my version will be! She's looking great and I'm eager to see her all done--what's left to do?
109 fan
Thank you for the compliment. She's done now. I added the vac canopy (with quite a few details) and antennas. I'll take some glamor photos and post soon. The second of the "Three" 109s is in the paint shop and will also be posted soon. The third isn't technically a 109, but is also in the painting phase.
