Sam builds a SAM hunter : 1/48 Vietnam Weasel Thud - FINISHED. READY FOR CRITIQUE

Never created SEA camouflage before,

never built a Thud before,

so yes, this is THE opportunity to do so.

Here‘s the victim:

p?i=f0f315ce1309e267c8f5c57ae1cac8ee

As the kit decals do not offer a sharkmouth option I shall go ahead and purchase this from a well-known online shop from the UK:

p?i=9f8ec3c53e17602f8a36e7e56a448f00

It will most probably be the „white lightning“ from 17 WWS in RTAB Korat.

Looking forward to another great GB with you guys!

Welcome to the GB Sam, and with a classic Thud scheme as it wouldn't be right to have a Centuury Series GB with a shark mouthed Thud Weasel.

Very much looking forward to watching this one mate.

🇺🇦

Thank you!

I was also a bit surprised nobody is building any of the „tanker guys motivators“ F-105D‘s.
I may therefore add a „killer“ to my „hunter“ later on to complete the Weasel pair. Probably the „Cherry Girl“ or the „P___y Galore“. But then there is the Eagle anniversary GB and then I really want to build a F-16N…. The naughty Thudess will have to wait.

Starting with some PE upgrades for the air intakes.
p?i=d3a674e3a892354cf86f8b85e200726f

comparison of kit part with eduard‘s PE

p?i=936666609f389cff5569b6d2d01561e9

and positioned on the fuselage halves

p?i=604e0e481ab2d708d1f4dd5d859b5a97

and this is the real nostril:

Conclusion: PE parts win this round.

Nice work on the PE intakes Sam, I am full of admiration for those such as yourself that can master the stuff.

I am just trying. Workload increases pretty much with PE, but I think it‘s worth it. Sometimes though I find The results can be better when using the plastic kit part. It‘s case-by-case. Just because there is a PE part on the fret it doesn‘t automatically mean it has to be used.

I agree, not all PE is improvement and I try to be more selective on what parts I actually use. But in this case, the intake is definitely an improvement 👍

Thank you and Yes sir I know! I am staying clear of the 20%. But I need this headstart. There‘s the Eagle GB to which I commited as well.

HB makes you build an overengineered engine just to hide it in the fuselage in the end. I guess some people may find it useful, one could build a diorama where the maintainers pull out the engine. That‘s not my cup of tea so a few bucks from the kit‘s cost going to waste. Would prefer to have the drivers included, but that‘s an endless discussion.

only did the visible parts of the engine.

Here are the instructions for the part:

Had to add the PE turbine parts anyway…

Looking at the finished turbine from the combustion chamber

Smart. This would be my approach.  That is, unless you're planning a diorama setting 😉

Funny, looked at the same photo half an hour ago.

HB and Trumpeter and gwh for that matter have this curious trend of detaileded engines that get hidden.

Waste of plastic and money as far as I'm concerned, at least 90% of modellers do them closed up and I would rather the time and money be spent on detailed cockpits and accurate outlines.

Sam,

To your earlier question posted in my build thread. I found this in the Squadron/Signal No.23 F-105 Thunderchief Walkaround publication.

As discussed in @Ray_W‘s log, the HB vertical stabilizer in the F-105G boxing is the wrong one. They simply used the single-seater stabilizer mould from the D model, which is too small. I just ordered my first plasticard sheets.

Engine intake trunking:

decided to cut up one of the inboard wingstation fuel tanks. Glued on in this rudimentary manner:

p?i=0ca24f8023aa36412d49353506c71efa

Looking through the intake:

p?i=2c76fc3cbd04db35234a8066b9cff2b2

p?i=e81fdfd81902506e829e37b29fbc35a1

Given the geometry of the intake, with the assembled wing cutting off even more of the visible part, it‘s good enough for me.

Excellent solution to the problem.
