Advice on selling a large model collection

Recommended Posts

Hello, apologies for hijacking your forum but my Aunt has inherited 1,500 unassembled mint condition models of various brands (Italeri, Tamiya, Revell) and she is keen to get ride of them with minimal hassle (not keen to sell them  individually).

I've approached several auction houses and they're all unsurprisingly keen to list them. Is there any users would recommend or advise against at all costs? Or would you recommend another channel?

Best wishes,

Jack p.s. is this area the best section to post such a question?

Not really, but :welcome: anyway.  Firstly,m sorry for your loss.  Losing a family member is a sad time.  From a practical POV I know someone that knows of a really good service, takes all the hassle out of it, and takes a percentage fee, so I'll get him to PM you with the details.  If you don't need your account after, let me know and I'll remove it from the server.  :)

I too am really sorry for your loss and know from having to do it recently what a painful task you're faced with.

Have a look at this site...   Kingkits.  They buy and resell pre-owned kits and having dealt with them I can recommend them.  I hope this is useful to you.

I have also dealt with Kingkit and sold 200 kits to them a few years ago with no problems.

Cheers

Thank you, really appreciate the input everyone.

With respect to auctions I have contacted Vectis and another auction house that was very helpful Britishtoyauctions. Is that a reputable name to buy from?

Will contact Kingkit.

Another good one may be Veteranus Auction Group on Facebook. They auction kits for you. Never used them myself but it is popular and I've not heard anything bad about them

Another shout out for Veteranus.  I have bought kits from them, with no hassle whatever.  I know a number of modellers personally who have used them to sell their excess stash / deceased modeller's stashes.  They make the whole job very easy - they even collect the models from you in certain cases - all you need to do is put them in boxes.  They auction kits and - as far as I know - you can get much better prices this way than from certain second hand kit retailers, who simply give a base price per kit.

It is well worth giving them a call/e-mail to get their details:-  01765 647828  or  [email protected]

I have no connection to the auction house - just a very satisfied customer.

Hi Jack,

Would echo what others here have said about both Kingkits and Veteranus - as scale model specialists, personally I think they're better placed than broader auction houses to maximise your Aunt's interitance of models.

I dealt with Veteranus for a smaller sale of inherited models from a deceased estate during the pandemic and was very happy with how it went. Happy to take a PM if you want to chat further.

Best of luck with it.

@Jack2357

I'd certainly second KingKit as a dealer, but you might like to consider KitKrazy as they are based in Bexley Heath.

I'd also suggest that somebody makes a comprehensive list - use a Word table or Excel - based on manufacturer, scale, subject and boxing number; that way you should maximise your receipts.

KitKrazy's website is offline at the moment which is an ominous sign.  It says "Back soon-ish" which isn't exactly encouraging either.

Another shout out for Veteranus in Ripon.  Good, old-fashioned no-nonsense operation.  They take around 30% of the proceeds of sale but they’ll collect, market, post and pick up PayPal charges: use with confidence.

  • 3 weeks later...

Just to reassure everyone,I was in the Kitkrazy shop last week,so they are still very much a going concern. I’ve never actually looked at their website, but I know they do buy old collections,it’s what the shop is basically full of. Chris.
