Big Starfighter: Graffiti Dutch 'Dusty' or...?

Dansk

Recommended Posts

This (big) kit I've had in the stash for years. But the AM I bought for this GB.

Danny Coreman's book I've used for some previous 1/48 builds.

The dutch 'dusty' decal sheet i bought fairly recently, But I'm not sure if i'll go this way yet?

I think the decals look hard edged compared to reference photos so if i do go this way I may create them manualy somehow.

All the kit schemes are great too.

I've always had a love of both the italian and Luftwaffe schemes.... hmmm.

Here's the lovely extras:

it's a big plane in 1/32... the reskit engine set is ace (and big)

I'm looking forward to this!

Definitely one to watch here Paul.

Enough aftermarket to keep our Australian accessory monster satisfied without making the build over complicated.

In terms of schemes I have always liked the older Italian one of green/grey camo with larger national markings and the large with codes on the fuselage, lovely!

Thanks bud. I'm leaning that way too; but if i can pull off the graffiti scheme it could be something really interesting. I'm not sure.

It is a very eye catching scheme but as you say the decals are hard edged rather than having the soft edge of sprayed on paint from a rattle can, and in 1/32 it will be noticeable.

Do the Italian one, you know it makes sense.😉

yeah but maybe i could hand airbrush the dusty scheme craig which might look cool and just use the decals for the numerals and national insignia.

I've been working on the big starfighter for some days now.

erasing all the kit cockpit detail ready to recieve it's PE.

52127371804_f1ac2994c0_b.jpg

then the PE was added bit by bit.

The rudder pedals make a big difference.

52126105542_91c5d75125_b.jpg

you can see bits of etch fitted here.

i scratched the wiring / pipe insulation / vent on the rear bulkhead based on danny coremans book references.

52127129906_28f75b2526_b.jpg

52127129816_ee13ee133b_b.jpg

Resin in place too here

52127129811_a08e5d52b6_b.jpg

all was primed in black.. the handle snapped off so i had to make one with copper wire. it looks ok once painted.

52126105547_da269c6f53_b.jpg

then i tried to match eduard's PE grey, even though its a way off the real grey

52127371849_96e0ec051c_b.jpg

52127155193_94ee13040c_b.jpg

then detail painting

52127155393_e3268f5e37_b.jpg

then the rest of the PE and a wash and matt varnish at the end.

The seat i think should have been black not grey but hey ho, it's done now.

Great to see this one up and running Paul.

Very nice work so far too, the etched rudder pedals are a lot better than the kit supplied plastic ones.

The cockpit and seat do look very good, the only thing I'm not keen on are the handles on the bang seat, they just look too flat to me.

Ohoo! That 32nd scale stuff looks like the real thing. If one knows how to handle it. Which you obviously do 👍🏽

looking forward to more of this!

Thanks chaps.

I have definately decided I go for the box italian scheme now.

this wing but a different number airframe... i like the Yellow accents they have.

not much to report; been constructing the landing bays among other things.

the kit detail is a touch soft for 1/32

but most of this will be hidden by the semi-closed doors.

all parts have mould seams on them, it takes ages to clean everything up all the time.

progressing with killing ejection pins on this intake trunking here

Lovely choice Paul, will you be building yours in a similarly weathered state? Must be at least 5 shades of dark grey on the upper surfaces, though the green isn't nearly as weathered.

As you say there isn't much point worrying about the interior of the wheel wells  as none of it will be visible later anyway,  makes you wonder why kit manufacturers bother detailing it really.

For a modern tooling I would have expected better with the mould seams and injector marks.

not sure about weathering yet craig.

gotta say im not overly enjoying this kit so far. theres just so much clean up to do all the time.

lots of ejector pin fun.

52141293191_daa18c91fb_b.jpg

and sometimes (quite a lot) theres instructions to drill holes

one has to use luck to guess where...

52140272002_969184a07d_b.jpg

glad i got the montex set to mask all the lights

52140272027_be35601c09_b.jpg

although i noticed mine is for aan alternate boxing so the masks for markings show airframe 335 not 331 like the kit decals but thats ok.

after sorting the resin engine i can join her up

52141529379_b9eee55028_b.jpg

gonna use the kit ejection seat handles to replace the flat etch

I shouldn't worry about those ejector marks on the inside of the gear doors Paul, you won't see them once they're fitted.

She's taking shape very nicely mate and I think you have made the right choice with the ejection seat handles.👍

Well there's been a little progress amidst what life's been throwing at me.

the kit engine fan i used, it probably wont be seen when its sealed and light starved.

52163562113_1a1f0a0e77_b.jpg

the rest of the engine is resin. it's been painted and weathered.

(there's a ton of resin here - a noseweight might be a good idea.)

52164048795_aac005c15f_b.jpg

weathering continues on the tail feathers

on @modelling minion  craig's nudge i dressed the kit handles to replace the flat PE.
