shortCummins Posted June 29, 2022 Author Share Posted June 29, 2022 For the intermediate layer I’m not going to use any hairspray, I have however dabbed on, with a sponge, some masking fluid along area’s that I think would receive most wear. A marble layer of several MRP colours was made, colours used: MRP-059 RLM66 MRP-114 extra dark sea grey MRP-159 chocolate MRP-205 eggplant dark grey MRP-275 6K Russian AFV brown MRP-366 dark grey I’ll be using the same colours for the dark blue so I’ve started the marble layer for that colours as well. The final part of the marble layer was made using MRP-136 intermediate blue. MRP-136 was then used to blend the colours. shortCummins Posted June 30, 2022 Author Share Posted June 30, 2022 The canvas areas of the wing and elevators were masked and given a light thinned coat of MRP-136 intermediate blue. This mixture was also used to add some highlight and the base for some fuel stains.. MRP-014 sea blue was added to the mixture and “dotted” over the wings. A thinned 80/20 Mr Levelling/MRP-014 was then misted over the wings. shortCummins Posted July 1, 2022 Author Share Posted July 1, 2022 Removing the mask(s) revealed quite a nice semi-soft demarcation between the blues. I need to “fix” the rear part of the intermediate blue, under the horizontal stabilisers, I’ll look at them later in the build. The sea blue was chipped to reveal both zinc-chromate and salmon pink primer and in some instances the aluminium airframe. I removed the cowl and cowl-flaps for ease. shortCummins Posted July 2, 2022 Author Share Posted July 2, 2022 So I had planned to paint the insignia using some Montex masks that I’d used for a previous build, being made from vinyl they can be re-used, however for some reason I didn’t save the “outer” mask for the stars so I’ve ordered a set from Hannants and I’ll tackle them when they arrive. Re-looking at some of my reference photo’s I noticed that the rudder appears quite a bit lighter, presumably the canvas(?) causes the paint to wear/fade differently to the aluminium, so I masked the area and gave it a thin coat of a MRP-004 white MRP-136 intermediate blue 60%-40% mix… …I also used the same mix for the underwings and flaps. Whilst I had the intermediate blue to hand I used some liquid mask to mask out the rear of the camo’ and filled it in with the colour. The “shadows” for the wing sections and elevators will be applied after the insignia. I used the kit decals as a guide and cut some masking tape to size… …and masked around them and added both liquid mask and hairspray. shortCummins Posted July 5, 2022 Author Share Posted July 5, 2022 The problem with painting black on dark blue is that it doesn’t really show as much as I’d like, I wasn't really happy so I resprayed them with lighter greys. MRP-114 extra dark sea grey followed by a misting of MRP-241 dark gunship grey. Firstly the liquid mask was removed… …and the remaining area chipped. Biggles87 Posted July 6, 2022 Share Posted July 6, 2022 Hi John, some photos of my Corsair as promised, sorry it’s taken so long but I had to take some more today as they where originally on Photobucket and I lost them when I refused to pay the ransom! The markings came from an old Aeromaster sheet and Aeromaster acrylics where used following their callouts on the sheet, which now seems a little pale compared to yours. My method for weathering with acrylic paints is usually to first lay down some aluminium or primer, spray the top colour then scrub away at certain areas with a stiff toothbrush slightly moistened with IPA ( no, not Imperial Pal Ale ). I had not heard of Flory washes when this was built 20 plus years ago but used water colours for streaks and stains , some of which have been diluted in an attempt to clean the surface with damp kitchen towel after sitting at the back of a dusty shelf for a long time. You can just about see the lightened areas on the control surfaces but for some reason I don't think I did the inner wing panels, nor did I weather the rear of the propeller blades; Hope you like them John PS: the Ariel was broken off whilst removing the model from the aforementioned shelf! 5 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
