timing is tricky as you only have a finite time while the hairspray is active, at least with having to resort to xtra muscle,  so being 3 colours has required a bit of head scratching.

For the intermediate layer I’m not going to use any hairspray, I have however dabbed on, with a sponge, some masking fluid along area’s that I think would receive most wear.

A marble layer of several MRP colours was made, colours used:

    MRP-059 RLM66

    MRP-114 extra dark sea grey

    MRP-159 chocolate

    MRP-205 eggplant dark grey

    MRP-275 6K Russian AFV brown

    MRP-366 dark grey

I’ll be using the same colours for the dark blue so I’ve started the marble layer for that colours as well.

52182203014_0e9ed53796_c.jpg

52181953851_6f65ded705_c.jpg

52181953826_d3f71bf235_c.jpg

The final part of the marble layer was made using MRP-136 intermediate blue.

52181953806_d8e2f96b65_c.jpg

52181953801_35e198b435_c.jpg

MRP-136 was then used to blend the colours.

52182440825_33cfdf826b_c.jpg

52182440815_0aa1bf8acb_c.jpg

Next I’ll be adding the sea blue.

until next time

as always, any suggestions, criticisms or comments will be gratefully received.

Hairspray was applied before the marble layer using most of the same colours, minus the browns, that I'd used for the intermediate blue…

MRP-059 RLM66

MRP-114 extra dark sea grey

MRP-205 eggplant dark grey

MRP-366 dark grey

52183970168_6770967d5a_c.jpg

52184209854_eacb7dc922_c.jpg

…plus:

MRP-024 sea blue ANA623, ANA606 (US Navy 1942-1955)

52183964041_9cbb09983f_c.jpg

52184447705_ff8f9f8783_c.jpg

52182942007_ac93cf1b4a_c.jpg

The marble layer was then blended with a thinned coat of MRP-237 sea blue FS35042 - ANA607

52184447675_b28742f19f_c.jpg

52184209839_c4e91ede97_c.jpg

Next I’ll be attempting some ost-shading.

I don't have a decent light source to enable the subtleties of the paint to show as the do "in real life" but I'm pleased with the effect that I see (so far)

The canvas areas of the wing and elevators were masked and given a light thinned coat of MRP-136 intermediate blue.

52183092782_9c5de0fc45_c.jpg

52184597950_d4f8a7bf3a_c.jpg

This mixture was also used to add some highlight and the base for some fuel stains..

52184123493_248cd80143_c.jpg

52184116421_fd1a53641b_c.jpg

MRP-014 sea blue was added to the mixture and “dotted” over the wings.

52184597900_ab4ce1d825_c.jpg

52184116396_dc4a4da12d_c.jpg

A thinned 80/20 Mr Levelling/MRP-014 was then misted over the wings.

Next I’ll be chipping the sea blue.

I'll be adding shadows and highlights (for the rudder) so they shouldn't be quite as stark as they are currently but hopefully will still be noticeably different?

Removing the mask(s) revealed quite a nice semi-soft demarcation between the blues. I need to “fix” the rear part of the intermediate blue, under the horizontal stabilisers, I’ll look at them later in the build.

52185926178_08d58a0a64_c.jpg

The sea blue was chipped to reveal both zinc-chromate and salmon pink primer and in some instances the aluminium airframe.

I removed the cowl and cowl-flaps for ease.

I may have gone a little too far with the chipping however, some reference photos I've seen...

52185062917_85823f25a4.jpg

So I had planned to paint the insignia using some Montex masks that I’d used for a previous build, being made from vinyl they can be re-used, however for some reason I didn’t save the “outer” mask for the stars so I’ve ordered a set from Hannants and I’ll tackle them when they arrive.

Re-looking at some of my reference photo’s I noticed that the rudder appears quite a bit lighter, presumably the canvas(?) causes the paint to wear/fade differently to the aluminium, so I masked the area and gave it a thin coat of a MRP-004 white MRP-136 intermediate blue 60%-40% mix…

52188742225_9909e0fc54_c.jpg

52188511324_272fa3ff6b_c.jpg

…I also used the same mix for the underwings and flaps.

52188259431_68375de58e_c.jpg

52188742245_f462fc1f63_c.jpg

Whilst I had the intermediate blue to hand I used some liquid mask to mask out the rear of the camo’ and filled it in with the colour.

52188511319_6645d87edd_c.jpg

52188742185_b3805eb853_c.jpg

Next I’ll be adding some shadows and highlights to these areas.

Shadows were added to the rudder and flaps, I masked the ribs…

52188933710_de63ff2dcc_c.jpg

52188457698_61c64ec61b_c.jpg

…and then some highly thinned 80-20 MRP-205 “eggplant” dark grey was used to simulate shadows.

52188447991_d84e366d26_c.jpg

52188457693_607729e378_c.jpg

52188447986_cd36455c5d_c.jpg

The “shadows” for the wing sections and elevators will be applied after the insignia.

Next adding the flaps and painting the walkways.

until next time

Great paint, John. I look forward to more.

From what I've read in the past, as they took the islands over, the Americans built crushed coral runways.

That huge propeller would have thrown the hard pieces into the paintwork with some force.

I've definitely seen many photos of Corsairs far more battered than this one, John, so I don't think you've overdone it at all.

Thanks for the history lesson @Pete in Lincs, I had no idea that's how they built the runways. Every day's a school day!

this is (more or less) the first time I've attempted multi-layer chipping and I'm really enjoying the effect.

what surprised me is that leaving it overnight made the chipping "easier" I assumed that you needed to apply the water (to reactivate the hairspray) ASAP? perhaps its something to do with lacquer vs acrylic paint?

Looking better with each stage.

I must try your ‘ rib tape ‘ method sometime, trouble is that when I get to the painting stage, which can be anything between 3 and 12 months I’m just impatient to get it finished.

Stay safe.

I know what you mean about being impatient, when I start thinking about "the next build" I know that I have to be careful that I either "rush" the current model or think to myself "that's close enough" and then regret not giving it my full attention.

Before painting the black walkways I thought it was a good idea to attach the flaps to the wings to ensure the walkways alignment.

I used the kit decals as a guide and cut some masking tape to size…

52193178223_70e45a43a1_c.jpg

…and masked around them and added both liquid mask and hairspray.

52193160846_a8849e2676_c.jpg

MRP-077 NATO black was used as a base colour…

52193226006_8c8c9ece6b_c.jpg

…followed by MRP-059 RLM 66, MRP-114 extra dark sea grey and MRP-366 dark grey

The problem with painting black on dark blue is that it doesn’t really show as much as I’d like, I wasn't really happy so I resprayed them with lighter greys.

MRP-114 extra dark sea grey followed by a misting of MRP-241 dark gunship grey.

52195633984_781cbbacc9_c.jpg

Firstly the liquid mask was removed…

52196033090_5177d29ae7_c.jpg

…and the remaining area chipped.

Hi John, some photos of my Corsair as promised, sorry it’s taken so long but I had to take some more today as they where originally on Photobucket and I lost them when I refused to pay the ransom!

IMG_2333

IMG_2341

IMG_2342

The markings came from an old Aeromaster sheet and Aeromaster acrylics where used following their callouts on the sheet, which now seems a little pale compared to yours. My method for weathering with acrylic paints is usually to first lay down some aluminium or primer, spray the top colour then scrub away at certain areas with a stiff toothbrush slightly moistened with IPA ( no, not Imperial Pal Ale ). I had not heard of Flory washes when this was built 20 plus years ago but used water colours for streaks and stains , some of which have been diluted in an attempt to clean the surface with damp kitchen towel after sitting at the back of a dusty shelf for a long time. You can just about see the lightened areas on the control surfaces but for some reason I don't think I did the inner wing panels, nor did I weather the rear of the propeller blades;

Hope you like them

John

PS: the Ariel was broken off whilst removing the model from the aforementioned shelf!
