Looking very Corsair-ish now.

I just went to page 1 by mistake and realised how quickly you had reached this stage, I would probably still be working on the cockpit!

ha ha, thanks John

I feel as if I've not "settled" into this build yet, having 10 days in Cornwall hasn't helped but its such a good kit that its almost building itself

it took longer to mark them out than to "do" them, I really should use tape, especially for the longer runs, but I find it difficult to place the tape in the correct place so I just do them "free-hand" but I'm not sure how much longer, age is defiantly catching up, I'll be able to do them without the tape, I really should practice! I think for my next build I'll Bite the bullet and use tape

I'm impressed you can do it so neatly freehand! My experiences with both rivetting and rescribing have never gone well freehand. Dymo tape works well as a guide, though you'll want to add some Tamiya tape or similar over the top of the opposite side to the guideline if it's on a tightly curved panel

No problem, John. For curved lines, use some Tamiya tape to trace the outline you want to scribe or rivet, then stick it on the Dymo tape and cut out.

I’m impressed too, Dymo tape for me every time.

I hadn’t thought of the Tamiya tape trick for curved panels, thanks for the tip @81-er

I've tried Dymo tape previously but there's a couple of issues, one of which is that I've found that it sometimes leaves glue residue, not too much of an issue normally however if you don't find it until after you've applied paint it could create issues, ask me how I know.

The other is that I don't find Dymo tape very flexible, when doing tight(ish) curves, such as wing-roots I can never get it to go where I want it to, you stick one end down and the other lifts.

the tape that I really should be using, no "real" excuse for not, is this...

52159506992_0d888a15bb_c.jpg

this is a sort of a cross between Dymo and Tamiya tape, it's got the rigidity of Dymo, but is far more flexible and the stickiness, or lack of, of Tamiya tape. As a bonus its transparent so you can see where you've put it, makes following panel lines much easier with little or no "drift" from the line.

as I said I've no real excuse for not using it, I will use it for my next build and try and make it a habit from then on. FYI I'm in two minds what to build next, currently winning is another "naked" build, this time a Mig-3, my youngest daughter bought me the Trumpeter 1:48 version for Dads Day. Coming a very, very close second is a Tamiya Beaufighter that I've got a RedRoos conversion kit to make it a target tug, I guess I'll decide nearer the end of this build?

I'll have to hunt some of that tape out and give it a try, thank you for the tip. As for the next build, both sound like solid choises to me

ha ha, that'd be an excuse for a cold Carlsberg (if only for the RFI photos)

recently I watched the Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor and was taken by the use of a Beaufighter as a transport plane with skies...

500px-The_Mummy_Tomb_of_the_Dragon_Emper

...the pilot (Liam Cunningham) was a character named "Mad Dog", what's not to like? I'd have to find some 1:48 figures, including a yak

Thanks to John, @Biggles87, I remembered to close the foot “step” in the flap with some plastic card and sprue-goo.

52158947877_797f360bba_c.jpg

Sanded flush and rivets added.

52160529668_319117bee3_c.jpg

Tamiya tells me that the front antenna is not required for this version however the mounting point needs to be filled by using the antenna…

52160234921_313d0d7aed_c.jpg

…that is then cut flush and the panel line re-scribed.

52160473539_1ba42e07e9_c.jpg

Cockpit and wheel wells  masked.

52162549808_2a63e8f0a3_c.jpg

Montex masks were used for the canopy and windscreen…

52162549798_815f7f31a2_c.jpg

…I applied some Mr Color 351 zinc-chromate type 1 as “interior” colour.

Stynylrez black primer applied.

Next I’ll be applying an aluminium “base” coat.

I left the primer to cure for an hour or so and then laid down a “base” coat of Xtreme Metal 481 polished aluminium*.

*I used this colour "just to use it up" as I'd first used it on by BAC Lightening where it came out a bit blotchy, as its done the same again and as I've not had any issues with the other Xtreme metal colours, I've 12 in total, I'm assuming that this bottle is a rogue version?

Next I’ll be adding the “primer” colours.

I wasn’t happy with the polished aluminium finish, even though 99.9% of wouldn’t be seen, so I gave the whole airframe a light coat of Xtreme Metal 479 aluminium.

52165065453_1bfa50445a_c.jpg

As I’m using Dansk’s build for inspiration I also want to add both salmon pink and zinc-chromate primers which will be revealed via some chipping.

I’ve put together a map of roughly where the colours go…

52163081788_c421c6aea7.jpg

So after a coat of hairspray I applied some of the salmon pink…

I spent a happy hour or so applying water and using a mixture of old stubby brushes, an airbrush cleaning tool and a tooth pick “chipping” the primer colours back to the aluminium.

While I realise that the “front” of the flaps almost certainly wouldn’t have “rubbed” against the wing but I’m exercising my artist licence to show some wear…

You’re really going to town on this, I blame that @Dansk he’s got a lot to answer for. 😆

One of my most weathered builds was a “birdcage”  Corsair some time ago ( pre Flory wash) which I still have in a box somewhere. I’ll try to dig it out if you’d like to see it.

love to see it John

the chipping of the primer coats is "exaggerated" as it'll be covered in blue(s) and white which will be chipped to, hopefully, show both the primer and aluminium and shouldn't look as "battered" as she does at the moment.

Having said that hairspray chipping is a bit like black magic, especially with MRP paints, so getting it to look "natural" is a bit of "don't push it" as you can quickly end up removing far too much of the top layer, even worse you can remove all of the paint down to the bare plastic! I think that Stynylrez might not be the best primer for this, perhaps Mr Hobby, Mr Finishing Surfacer would be a better option as its lacquer based rather than acrylic?

I'm liking how this is turning out, John, great work there. I'm also learning a lot about Corsairs, I didn't realise they used a mixture of pink and chromate primers.

please don't take what I'm doing a "gospel" whilst salmon pink was used on early aircraft later ones would have been  zinc-chromate, I've used a heavy slice of "artistic licence" to use both the salmon and zinc-chromate on one aircraft, I'm not saying it wouldn't have been done but I've absolutely no proof that it was.

Up until I joined here last year, I'd always assumed all US aircraft had zinc chromate primer. Then I ran across some of the discussion about P-51 wheel wells...

And as for the artistic license, can anyone prove there weren't aircraft with both types of primer used? ;)

When my local shop brought in that tape I bought it all up, they brought in various sizes and colors.

Before I add any paint I used some PVA glue to temporarily fix the engine cowl to the airframe to insure consistency of the camo' patten.

As I’m a fan of black-basing I would “normally” be applying the camo’ colours over a darker base, this time it’ll be interesting to see how they come out over the pink and zinc?

White is the first colour that I’ll be applying for the tri-colour camo’.

I’ll be using MRP-135 insignia white, a very slightly off-white, as the main colour rather than MRP-004 white which I think would be too bright for the “well used” aircraft I want to depict.

I will still create a “marble” layer, this will be blended with MRP-135, different panels and other areas were given various colours to try and give some colour variation.
