Redstaff
Question for all the lorry builders out there. As you may be aware I'm building the Bedford dropside for the big and British GB. I'm after advice on how to make the deck look like wood, dashboards I can do with the correct shade of brown and clear orange over the top to give a nice polished veneer effect, but how do I go about replicating planking? Any tips gladly received Ian 😀
Black Knight
Use real wood. Buy either thin balsa or veneer. Both can be got as thin as 1/64 inch [0.4mm]. Get a sheet, slice into plank widths and turn every second one around 180 degrees to break up the grain pattern. Colour stain, varnish, and dirty up to your liking
Redstaff
Thanks BK TBH I'd thought of real wood, but dismissed it as being too thick, I need to find some balsa then 😀
klubman01
Or, coffee/tea stirrers from Costa? Long, and quite thin. Trevor

TonyW
I use tongue depressors, sourced from the internet. Real wood, very thin and quite close grained as they have to be a fair bit smoother than stirring sticks. A pack lasts ages. Â Tony. 1
richellis
Don’t use Balsa, look for thin plywood used in dolls houses, Basswood, I think it’s called. much better than balsa 1
Fnick
Cornwallmodelboats.co.uk stock a good selection of wood strips and sheets. Â I've used them in the past and have always been happy with their service. No affiliation with the company btw! Â Nick 1

JeroenS
I've used coffee stirrers on several builds, works fine. You do have to finesse them a little but sometimes, but they bend quite easily in all directions.  I like @TonyW's tongue depressors though, I'll see if I can scrounge some of those.
