Nunu Audi Sport Quattro Rally car

Recommended Posts

On the 50 th anniversary of the World Rally Championship it’s appropriate that I finish this Group B car from the 1985 Portuguese Rally . Walter Rohrl finished 3rd in this , the short wheelbase version of Audis previously all dominate , game changing Quattro . With 450bhp on and off like a switch , Rohrl was beaten by the Peugeot 205 T16 ,which took over from Audi as the car to beat in rallying .
This kit started off like this

But an aftermarket purchase of Reji decals turned it into this .

These Nunu / Beemax / Aoshima kits really have stolen Tamiya and Hasegawas thunder and , having built a few already , they are easy to build and I highly recommend them . Reasonable prices too . Anyway , more photos

Looks really good and I like more this yellow sponsor scheme vs what is in kit.

Thanks Vesa . I think the yellow scheme is better too .

What an absolute stunner this is Gary. Brilliant build mate you knocked this one out of the park...love it 🙂👍

As Keith said, another excellent build from you here. Personally I prefer the original colour scheme, but that in no way detracts from the sterling job you've done with this one.

Thanks for all the kind comments . Regarding the colour scheme , I think it should have been one or the other , not both . Maybe more yellow and less Audi stripes . The rare photos of Marlboro and Rothmans sponsored cars are all their specific colours - not both . Must admit the yellow certainly stands out !

That's really nice Gary

It makes me want to cracked on with mine soon, or the S1 with the skirts, it looks like a great kit 😀

I can’t recommend these Nunu kits highly enough . Easy to build , cheap enough and providing subject matter we’ve waited years for !  Thanks for the comment.

Hi Gary

I agree, the Nunu / Beemax kits are great you just need to really study the instructions. I've already built the lancia S4 and that's one of the best kits I've ever built. The detail is superb 😀

For some reason, I've never been a Audi fan as far as rallying was concerned. Maybe something to do with their sudden dominance over many of my favourite rally cars, blooming Teutonic spoilsports. :( For that reason as as much as any other, I skipped your WiP, but then yielded to curiosity & WOW, what a revelation, that looks superb, for a boxy angular Teutomobile that is. ;) :D  I'm liking the look of their 86 Monte Carlo kit, just a bit. :)

Just like Le Mans - until they went to play with those fast milk float type things! 🤣 I do agree with you about them killing off so many favourite classic rally cars though Steve!

And I've just been looking at the pics again and still think it's excellent that you got such a super finish on them with a brush! Brilliant work!

Your comments  , Steve and Keith , are interesting , something I've never really thought about . The 4x4 rally revolution was just beginning as I took an interest in motorsport , through Autocar magazine and ITV World of Sport . Before that the 2wd cars didn't really figure with me . I do wish Ford had carried on with the Escort RS1700T . I reckon it could have been a short term winner , then as it turned out , a 4x4 version could have been made for Group A , just as the Sierra  Cosworth was quickly converted to 4wd . I wonder if the rumoured Audi Formula 1 project will be all dominant  ?

The Escort Cossie took on that role pretty well though Gary, though I agree the RS1700T would have been an interesting Grp A car! When I first really got interested in rallying the Mk1 Escort had just been introduced - and led to my life long love for those and Mk2's! Other favourite cars (among many others!) from those days are the Avenger/Sunbeam, Firenza/Magnum, Saab 99 Turbo,Ascona/Manta, Fiat124/131, Minis and oddities like the Skoda 110 and Morris Marina coupe!!

What I really liked at the time was that they were all really just modified road cars - ok the works teams had far better budgets than privateers, but with some talent (sadly lacking in my case!) a clubman could build a competitive car on a pretty limited budget - especially as the sport was so popular back then there were plenty of second hand parts available and the base cars were cheap - I never paid more than £450 for an Escort Mexico!! Unfortunately those days are long gone!

I'm curious to see about that also. Potentially it could be - they pull a Mercedes. But on the other hand, they could flop like BMW and Toyota did.

Brilliant Windy37! I remember these on the stages as a rally marshal in the day.

Apparently Porsche are looking to enter F1 , rumour has it with Red Bull and Audi are looking to take over  a current team . I thought they are part of  VAG , who must now have plenty of money again after the diesel scandal  !!
