Since my first build is progressing faster than I expected, I might  as well re"pete" myself. and what better than to do one from the kind folks that brought us the Galant, Mirage and Outlander ... 1/48 Mitsubishi F1M2 Type Zero Observation Seaplane Model 11 from Hasagawa. In other word's a "Pete".

This one's a little more involved than the Rex. So it might take more than a day or two to complete. Especially since it's a bi-plane and that means more than the usual one or two issues.

So any and all comments, suggestions, or encouragement, verbal or liquid, is most assuredly welcome. I better find my water wings with all these Seaplanes in the queue.

Great,

This must have ben one of the very last biplanes to enter service I suspect, just after the Gloster Gladiator and only the Fiat CR 42 was later AFAIK. Apparently it was highly manoeuvrable and was even used as a fighter (against unescorted bombers I presume).

Though when it ran into fighters it did not stand much chance - the one above may have been strafed rather than shot down but it has been well chewed up by some 50cal mg I guess!

While waiting for parts on my other sea plane build, I got a few things done  on the Pete.

First thing completed the Sea Plane trolly

Its not much but at least Now I have something to set the plane on.

The Pete's cockpit is a little more involved than the Rex's. I should  have gotten better pictures before putting the sides on. At least you could then see all the pieces that Hasagawa has you put together. The only thing I added was some spare seat harness' for the pilot and observer.

I did give all the panels a dark  wash to bring out the detail.

Then commenced to putting the fuselage bit together.

The fit is very good. only a few small spots are going to need filler. Mostly on the bottom at the wing join.

I'll let these dry overnight. Then tomorrow I'll sand down and do the pre-shading. The canopies have been dipped in Kleer and drying. I'll be able to add and mask them and the Rex's and both builds will be pretty much at the same level.

So until tomorrows update, stay safe, stay healthy and model on!:pilot:

I agree more awesome Floatplane stuff!!!!!

What a great looking models, and a great looking start as well. That cockpit area looks to be very nicely detailed, you've done a great job on her so far.

Good luck with this build as well, it's nice to see more Float/Seaplanes in the build.

Almost a month later and finally able to get back to the Pete. After letting the filler dry and sanded down smooth I began the pre-shading process

52141407810_b480ea959f_c.jpg

Then painted the lower and upper surfaces with several light coats until I had my shading where I anted it.

THat having dried I used a dark wash for the panel lines.

Its easier to see on the underneath rather than the topsides.

52141162064_bb496bc103_c.jpg

Then gave everything a light misting of light gray to tone down the green and give it all a slightly faded look.

Next I decided to add guide wires to the wings. The instructions mention using a P/E set but thats not included with the model but a separate addition like om the Fairey Swordfish.

But no longer available . I thought about using EZ-Line, but that's too thin. First attempt I used thin rod like I did on a Fairey Albacore I did some time back but couldn't get it to stay straight., so I took the top part of the top wing off, I had already pre-drilled holes for the wires and glues .3mm sliver beading wire. Plus side, its metal so I don't have to paint it. Minus side it doesn't pull tight so well. I glued the wire to the top part of the lower wing, then run it up through the lower portion of the upper wing gluing in place( confoozin' ain't it). I would get one side right, nice and tight and then do the other side only to find out the first side would develop slack. This went back and forth for 2-3 days. I finally got it to one side right, the other, not so much. and decided to call it a day and re-attached the top portion of the upper wing and proceeding on.

After that I gave the area that were getting decals a coat of clear gloss. Letting this dry over night I proceeded to add the decals. I'm not a particular fan of the yellow decal bands for the leading edge of the wings, but I don't have the right colour yellow so these will have to do.

The decals are thick so I put a lot of cots to soften them up especially the leading edge. Thankfully I didn't have any of them shatter.

But I'll let these dry over night and then tomorrow give everything a matte coat and add the final bits. Probably 2 days more (God willin' and the creek don't rise) And the this little project will be in the bag. So until then Stay safe, Stay Healthy.

That paint job turned out very nice, and I like the subtle fading, nicely done.

The rigging didn't turn out too bad at all in the photos, being heavy wiring I can't think what else you could have used.

She'll look amazing when done, can't wait.

Thanks, Port side tightened up the way it's supposed to, the starboard side has some slack ( droopyness) I should have the last bits on tomorrow and then to the Gallery. The next build I think shall be... well lets call it a "Nursery Rhyme". and see if it can be sussed out before I start:hmmm:

She's looking good mate, nice work B)

Hmm a nursery rhyme eh? I'm plumping for a Jack, or a Jill... but if it's another floatplane then I'm at a loss, long time since I heard any nursery rhymes :D

Cheers,

Stew

Both are in the ballpark, but not quite. But before that reveal it's time to finish up this build.:yahoo:

Time for the final episode of this build. Now that the decals have set Time to finish up the final bits.

Some Tamiya Aluminum used to simulate weather chipping which in the South Pacific tended to happen a bunch and oily black for the exhaust stains

52143951431_4cd909306f_c.jpg

Used EZ Line to do the antennas

and finally the ordinance

Some aspects didn't come out as I would have liked, but overall this has been a relatively by-the-numbers build and came out ok.

I want to thank everyone for following long and all the comments I'll have this up on the Military Gallery shortly the the start of another build. I think this time we go for a nursery rhyme 2fer!

So until the Stay Safe, Stay Healthy and most definitely Model ON!
