Shuttleworth Season Premiere

Morning all,

Thought I'd share a few images from the season opener from Old Warden last weekend. A decent enough line up, it was the Seafire that stole the show; my absolute favourite warbird, I've been waiting a long time to see her back in the air, and she didn't disappoint! A beautfiful display. The weather was dull and grey all day, which isn't great for photography, so many of these are slow shutter images in front of the trees to at least try and inject a bit of colour and interest into the shots...

Thanks for looking,

Took me a few moments to realise what 'in front of the tress' meant...

Typical Murphy's Law situation. Some reasonable weather turning grey and cold for the first airshow of the season. I came up from Sussex with a friend and we had serious thought about whether to cut our losses ( advanced tickets) and stay at home to save the petrol money but it turned out to be a good show despite the weather being poor for photography.

One of the highlights for me was seeing the Wren doing circuits only a few feet above the ground. Did you get any pictures of it? If not I'll put up one of mine.

A terrific set of shots Shan. Agree the Seafire looks ace and its nice to see the Lanc back in the air. I'm also impressed with the motion blurred background in some of the pictures. Looks to have been a good day out.

Woops! Typo amended... I didn't hang around for the Wren or the Eds on this occasion,it was already dark enough by the time the Anson landed!

Some great photography there Shaun- really like the precise  take off shots with the blurred background. I assume that is is to do with aperture settings?

Thank you for posting🙂

Colin

More shutter speed thatn aperture. I always shoot props (and helicopters) in TV mode so I can control the shutter speed and get the desired prop/rotor blur. In this case I dropped it down to 1/100 second to not only increase the prop blur but to blur the background and give a sense of speed. In truth it's tricky to achieve a perfectly sharp airframe at both nose and tail unless the aircraft is perfectly side on, but I mostly got away with it here... ;)

Thanks for the information Shaun - getting away with it is an understatement.  I shall have to try aerial shots at that setting.🙂
