Italeri Semovente M42 "Beutepanzer"

Recommended Posts

I call this one done for now. The Italeri Semovente M42 "Beutepanzer" wich was deployed during the siege of monte Casino.

20220430_143154

The build was pretty straight forward with a simple interior. The tracks provided with this kit were horrible, however it was no option to order aftermarket tracks because of the cost.

I struggled with the paintjob and altough i got it after the second time i still think i have much to learn and improve when it comes to airbrushing and weathering. I still have the feeling i don't master the techniques fully....so, much to learn.

I tried to bring the vehicle to life with some stowage. I think it works nicely. Still a bit affraid to do figure painting so i saved the figures from a few kits so i can learn to paint them.

Anyway, this is it. My take on the Semovente. Mistakes were made but i enjoyed the learning progress.

I hope you guys like the build. I welcome any critisism, tips and tricks.

Tnx for stopping by and taking the time to look at the build.

Take care guys👍👍👍

There's an understatement! You've achieved a great recovery with this.

Probably quite a bit less than I have to learn - but then this hobby is a lot about learning how to do it. 😀

@Maddoxx77, I think she looks damn good! 🍻  And quite realistic to my old eyes Maddoxx.   Your paintwork turned out fine on the second try, and the running gear looks fantastic!   Well done for sure man!  :clap2:

Nicely done. The camo is an effective reproduction of how it looks in some photos, where the olivegrun and rotbraun paint has been applied fairly heavily. Excellent!

Nice one Maddoxx. That was a tough paint job but you pulled it off. Well done and thanks for an enjoyable build log. Cheers.👏👍

Tnx @Stef N. it was tough indeed 🤣

I had my doubts about the camo...all the photo's i could find were in black&white.

So i went a bit with the box art. Only the green is darker on my model.

Tnx for your comment @Ian C

Hola Maddoxx,

Excellent job with the kit, it shows that the learning curve is increasing, without a doubt, the chosen camo is a challenge, since it requires knowing how to use an AB, and that that AB behaves as it should (although I do not consider myself at all an expert in this, I know that I can do better things, because sometimes, when everything seems to go smoothly, the AB "decides" no, that either not enough paint will come out, or too much will come out, or you can't hone in on the point where you want a subtle stain instead of a glob of paint....).

In view of the result, I think you can be proud, it looks like a very interesting model.
Although it is true, that it is a vehicle that is very motley in its forms and with a contained size, which together with the camo, makes it really difficult to discover its forms (in a real vehicle, guaranteed success...lol).
Don't take it as a criticism, I think that if it had been painted only in sand, all the details would look better, but the variety in the models is also cool...

Good idea to include some equipment elements, it brings personality and individuality with other M42s...

I imagine that the tracks have been the worst part of the kit, and it is that Italeri is no longer a brand to have on the front page, although it has been updated with PEs and individual tracks, they are not up to the standard of other current options (quality- price).

I remember my first purchases on my return to the hobby, a couple of Italeri kits (Stug IV and Jgdpz IV, already with new molds (according to them), with PEs (few, better...lol), and indy tracks...

The adjustment was a headache, and the tracks...the worst I've seen in a long time...along with my zero experience in that field...
Since then, what was for me the affordable and endearing brand in times and with another variety of models, with respect to the "Tamiya" Queen, is no longer an option, except in very specific models, after seeing reviews of them by specialized media. ...

Perhaps as guinea pigs, the best option is Tamiya, the old references have a contained price (similar to Italeri), and although they are not very exact in detail or dimensions, the assembly and the instructions are great, and when finished, they can be very well, and if not, the loss is little...

Waiting for your new model.

Cheers and TC
Francis.👍

Tnx @FrancisGL and you are right. I had been thinking about doing this kit in a dark yellow or even a german grey. However, this camo scheme challenged me and that was the point. I think it turned out decent, much room for improvement. I got to learn my AB a lot better. Learning it's limits so i can use that to my advantage in future builds.

I found that the tracks and the decals were not up to par. Also there were some problems with the fit of the kazemat on the lower hull. The PE included was not worth mentioning, i think they put it in the box just to sell more..... not becouse it actualy adds something to the kit.

Still i enjoyed myself. Now off to a new one. The STuG III Ausf G from Reyfield Model. Can't wait to start with that one.

Cheers Francis!

Hi Maddoxx,

I could be wrong, I don't know about that specific model, but RFM kits are usually very difficult in terms of tracks, over-engineering for a single link, and a multitude of parts in total...
I try to avoid this brand for that...

Well you know how to cheer someone up! 🤣🤣🤣🤣

It's my first RFM kit so i'll have to see for myself. I chose this kit for it's full interior and a decent amount of PE included so new challenges.

As always i'll start a buildlog so feel free to follow along. You are more then welcome. 👍👍👍

HI Maddoxx,

Nothing further, it was not my intention to discourage you at all, I had not thought about it... I'm sorry.
Personally I have not done any RFM, but in the forum I have seen members complain about it...
In any case, I think you will be successful with the tracks, because you have a very good learning pace and it seems that you are very motivated.
Now with more experience, when dealing with the tracks of each model, I assess how difficult they seem, and I prepare what I think will make the assembly easier...
A few homemade jigs usually lighten the work a lot, and makes them look better.
Thanks for the invite, let's see if I have some time to take a look...

No hard feelings! I ment it as a joke. I think this next project will have it's own challenges. And i have read some reviews of this kit and i know it's not accurate. But that beeing said, i'm looking forward to the process of learning new skills. I really hope you will join in the build log. I always appriciate your comments and tips.

Hi Maddoxx,

Sure mate, I had caught the nuance...lol, but still, it didn't occur to me that it could be negative in some way, a well-intentioned comment...well I see there was no such effect...lol
On the other hand, what I didn't think was that an RFM kit would be inaccurate, from Italeri, yes, I expect it...but from a brand like that...well, it surprises me.
I'll try to go through your WIP, but just in case, I don't know if you've seen my Stug IV (Italeri), although it's not the same brand/kit, it still helps you get ideas of what you might like to do, and not do. .
There's a WIP and an RTI, with reciprocal links, if you're interested.
