If anyone wants to really get into understanding the details of how things were filmed, produced, etc. the Fighter Pilot Podcast has spent the last month dedicated to TOPGUN... the school and the movies.

The most recent episodes have been about the actual filming: https://www.fighterpilotpodcast.com/episodes/ (143 is the original, and 144 about TG:M)

They also held a post-screening panel featuring 4 TOPGUN instructors:

Just back from seeing the film with my wife and she enjoyed it. Me, 633 Squadron on steroids, and I enjoyed 633 Squadron.

I wonder if anyone will produce decals for the plane? if they haven't already, that is. And in a way I am disappointed for Tom Cruise if the navy wouldn;t let him fly one of teir jets - no matter how much they gave him 😉

Airfix have issued their 1/72 Mustang in Cruise's markings.

As for flying the jets. I'm quite sure he got a bit of stick time in the Hornet albeit from the back seat. He owns or has access to an Aero L39. So he has flown a fast jet.

Just arrived back  from seeing it with  my wife and teenagers. For my wife and I it was a trip down memory lane only better. The boys did enjoy it.

It was great fun and most enjoyable.

I don't think I'm going out on a limb here but I  believe the flying sequences are best in any movie that I've seen. Particularly since most of it was for real. Spot the shadows on the hillsides!

10 out of 10 for me.

For the P-51, Draw Decal do it in a range of sizes if you don't get the Airfix kit.

For Maverick's Super Hornet, Meng & Hobby Boss have it in their recent 1/48 kits while Revell have it in 1/72 in the dual boxing with the F-14.

Saw the film recently and absolutely loved it. 10/10.

Just been for my second sortie, and even though it’s not as jaw dropping second time round, still a fine romp. May we’ll go a third time!

Saw the film last Sunday...and am blown away! It was simply great even though it had Hornets in it! 😉 A worthy successor for the younger generation but for me being an old fart the original is still the best...and nothing will ever beat a Tomcat. 🙂

Having said this, I went ahead and ordered a Hobbyboss -E Hornet and afterwards spotted that very old Italerie -E that I have in my pile. Lot's of errors on that kit though, not sure if it is worth bothering with it?

cheers

Uwe

I've seen it twice now, on IMAX both times (probably won't get that opportunity again) and TG-M is certainly living up to the hype! Great movie.

The "re-skinning" of real aircraft in flight was quite amazing. The Tomcat was an f-18 in flight, as was "Dark Star".

The takeoff over the security hut was entirely real, but using the spare Blue Angel F-18 aircraft from the display team. The sequence in the movie was the last one filmed and the roof of the security hut really DID lift off (most unexpectedly!) and land back down due to the jet taking off overhead!

LockMart employees actually designed and "built" the Darkstar, and LM has a page on their site dedicated to it: https://lockheedmartin.com/topgun

Convincing enough for a chinese recon satellite to change orbit to have a look though!

Was that the one that was called the cobra stunt at one point?

No, The "cobra" was the maneuvre used to defeat one of the other pilots during the "training for the mission" phase. 1 Vs 1.

Saw it yesterday and had a very similar reaction to the first TG movie. Just AMAZING, unrivalled flying sequences.... but the rest of the film? The "other scenes" just filled in the spaces between the cool bits, from where I was sitting.

Not everyone like it.... a mum and three young kids walked out half way through (probably due to a distinct lack of talking fish / unicorns / snow-men / candle-sticks / other very cynical, blatant merchandising-opportunities, etc. Ten minutes later, a couple in their 20's also departed.

9.5/10 for aerial action, 2/10 for the "emotional" stuff.

Cheers.

Chris.

We (SWIMBO and I ) saw it on IMAX, too - I feel the need to watch it in an "ordinary" cinema just to get the right idea of how much better it is in IMAX.

And to watch the secuirty hut roof lift off !

Thanks for the clarification; I suspect that will be the second thing I'll be looking out for when I see it again! (Please note the "when", not if !!)

Put it down to the attention span of the "youth" of today.

Just been to see it. It's an absolute blast.

The stress readings on my Garmin during the film speak volumes!

....my point is that Star Wars and TG Maverick clearly have the same inspiration in 633 Squadron, but was there something that inspired 633 Squadron, or did the writers of that film basically invent that aviation plot?

best,

I guess 633 Squadron was made at a time when WW2 was still fresh in the minds - there were an awful lot of WW2 related films, TV and literature back then.

Mosquitos were used on similar attacks in real life, the French prison and the Gestapo HQ in Denmark.  The Danish one went horribly wrong, so would have been glossed over in those times but there is a very good recent Danish language film - worth seeing but it will leave you feeling very low at the end.

The film was based on the book by Frederick E Smith written some ten years before the film was made. The DNA of the 633 Squadron; Star Wars Death Star run and similar is basically the same. The good guys charge the guns in a death or glory ride. Very successful theme in the movies

I must be missing something as I thought it was the most hackneyed Jingoistic couple of hours I won't get back. Enjoyed it for the plane porn and whizz bangs though.

Now don't take this as I have insulted your honour and hopefully you don't require satisfaction but essentially find it overrated.

Would that be satisfaction via the time-honoured tradition of duelling with  F-18s at dawn ?  :)
