Here's what's in the box.

Assembly is illustrated in six exploded diagram stages. For something a little different I like the look of the Falklands scheme that she wore for a time after the conflict.
First a dry fit.

I airbrushed the wooden decks.

I have taken drastic action.

I don't claim this to be totally accurate, more like my impressionist period.

Another dry fit.

I constructed the forward helipad from 20thou and 80thou plastic card,

I found this chopper in my spares

A fantasy flight on the aft helipad

I then carved a Sea King helicopter from offcuts.

Many of the stairways are short shot or missing altogether. I need to replicate them. I do have six on the stern decks that will not be used and could utilise them.

And then a bit of a disaster with the Mig One Shot White Primer

I airbrushed white with an open spray, then masked up to airbrush.

The hull above the waterline was airbrushed with blue grey.

The masking was removed.

I need to re-mask and spray the starboard side as my line was astray.

Gaps at the top of the deck were filled with Vallejo Model 70400 Plastic Putty. I cut a base, 50cm x 8cm from one of my offcuts. Having scratched the bridge part earlier I have discovered other parts missing. I don’t know whether they were missing when I bought the kit or if I’ve subsequently mislaid them as the Sea King I’d scratch-built is also missing, but they’re not simple things to replace. My carving skills are probably not up to replicating them.

The base I’d cut, I have now painted black.

@Ratch, I had some QE2 kit parts left when I built this QE2 What-if five years ago:

I have just dug out the old QE2 kit box and if you let me know what parts you need, I will send them to you if I have them.

@davecov had used the funnel bits, so I scratched replacements (don't look too closely). Then I painted touch-ups and prepared the base.

The lifeboats and davits are painted. The next stage will involve Klear and decals.

Lovely work Ratch!

May I ask what colour was used for t red hull area?

How did the QEs come to be involved? I know that there were several TUFT ships involved (the Atlantic Conveyer being the obvious example) , was the QE 2 also a TUFT ship?

Looking forward to the finished article,

cheers,

Pappy

Hi @Pappy, I used AK Interactive AK5031 RN Hull Red.

On 3 May 1982, she was requisitioned by the British government for service as a troop carrier.

Cheers Ratch, I like the color, just the right amount of brown but still a red hue.

It sounds like the QE2 was a TUFT (Taken Up From Trade) ship as well. I remember at the time  seeing news stories about how the floors and some of the finishings were covered in plywood to protect them. Still, there are worse ways to go to war...

cheers,

Pappy

I airbrushed Klear in preparation for the transfers. I applied the kit supplied decals using Microset and Microsol.

The name and port of registration markings for the stern are printed in black. These should be white as they should be positioned over the Dark Grey Blue area of the stern. I scratched two Sea King helicopters, they’re crude but give an indication of the size of the ship.

Well you learn something all the time. I can remember watching all the news and following the war as much as possible as an 11 year old. Somehow I just never knew or realized the Q.E.2 was involved ?

QE2 didn't get close in to the Falklands, whereas Canberra went right in to San Carlos water

This lead to a banner on the side of Canberra on her return reading

"P&O Cruises where Cunard Refuses"
