I would like to ask, does anybody know codes of all ten dfs-230 used in operation Eiche in Gran Saso, 1943 ( the  liberation of Mussolini)? From photos i think i can recognize following: LG 1-28, LC 1-8, LG 1-34... Regards. J-W.

The Gen.Qu.6.Abt.-Vol.21 document lists only the Werknummern (standard practice when the airframe is on ‘their’ side of the front) of Sonderstaffel Heidenreich lost in the 12.Sept. 1943 operation.

 122126,  122163 (damaged 40% landing at Fl.Pl. Grossetto, pilot error), 122807, 127050,  127203,

221079, 221277,  221282,  221307 (Uffz. Ronsdorf, injured in landing),  222227,  227468

LC+1-8, which landed right next to the hotel, was the glider of Ritterkreuz recipient Lt. Elimar  Meyer of the 12./LLG 1 (who had flown at Crete in May 1941).

For the fuselage codes, we’d probably need the rest of the film rolls shot by PK-Bildberichter Toni Schneiders, the existence / survival of which is unlikely.

Good luck with your search,

wow, George, do you keep files on everything ?!

It might be helpful to check out the Gran Sasso pages at the Bundesarchiv photo archive

You can narrow the search down by clicking on "Erweiterte Suche" top right and adding 'DFS 230'

"do you keep files on everything ?"

Just the important stuff. 😉

When I started, 40+ years ago,  assembling the immense db (soon joined by my friend and colleague, Jim Perry), I decided to record 'everything.'  One intention was to use this to help more-accurately caption photographs.  While most of the modelling public is interested in fighter aircraft, it's always a nice surprise when someone is interested in the 'other' types.  After all, what airframe played a greater role in the Luftwaffe, the humble Ju 52, or the flashy Me 262?

Neil, thank YOU for all you have done, and continue to do.

Neil and George,

Dave Wadman and I interviewed a former pilot from that Luftwaffe unit in the late eighties who surprisingly lived close to us. He had a small photo album given to all participants that included a number of unpublished photos. Let me take a look to see if there is any information I can add.

Best,

David

Thank you! - to be frank I started from that but I was surprised, that so few details on codes I can get from such widely documented action!

LC 1-8 is here (4 photos):

And here it is likely LG 1-34

That one is described as DFS 230 C1 (with breaking rockets?) but I cannot read any code

I had hope that information can exist....
