A triple Do 17 build: K, P & Z, all in 1/72

This weekend I did work on undercarriage on all three. It is not finished yet. The Airfix wheels are bigger that RS. I think it is not a flaw, the real Do 17Z could have bigger wheels. But I have nit found it (did not confirmed so far).

Interesting that some reinforcing bars goes the same on left and right sides - I made initially mistake assuming that they are mirror like... Then I have to cut and do replacements... Instead of PE elements provided by RS I used sctrach work from  stretched sprues.

Here they are:

and the family. On a lower shelf there is Do 17E by Airfix, done some 45 years ago and few years ago a bit refreshed.

You really are doing a very good job on all three of your builds, they look very nice indeed.

And your collection looks great, some very nice Spanish Civil War machines there.

Hi J-W,

Yes, I reached the same conclusion with the AM 17Z wheels I used on my Airfix E - they do seem to be bigger than the ones in the rather small plan I used when scratching the undercarriage, making the plane sit a bit higher than expected. As the weight increased quite a bit - E 9920lb empty, 15520lb loaded against Z empty 11484lb, loaded 18931lb according to Green - then maybe the Z did have bigger wheels. Incidentally, the 215 with the inline engines was actually even heavier than the Z.

A month lasting break happened, I am sorry to say. I had some more intense period in my regular job, so the hobby had to step back for a while...

I am about to return :)

Some progress with painting can be observed:

J-W, I'm so happy to tell you that we've been granted a two week extension :yahoo:. I hope this helps you (and me!) to finish our builds and get them in the gallery. V-P

Thank you. I was to busy with different things that I was not doing any modelling for eight weeks! This is very unusual, but today I dis some progress od my dorniers.

During this long weeks I painted Do 17 K but not posted photos. So today at morning the Do 17 K (Croatian) was the most advanced one of three. On morning I started with painting frams on canopy:

Then I painted overall gloss varnish

And applied decals few minutes ago:

During day I worked also on Z and P. First I did masking of the camo on Do 17 P and Do 17Z

Here is view after applying Humbrol 91 as Schwartzgrun:

Both RLM 70 and 71 applied on both Dorniers

I have bought mask for canopy of Do 17, so I will use it

Hi

I have just finished two - the K and Z, the P has to be done yet... I managed it! It was a long and intense weekend with modelling, the weather in Krakow was right for it....

The K was almost finished yesterday. But the Z was not very advanced in morning.

I started with masking canopy (vinyl masks by Pmask). I found them very good,

52270758474_295f6eeeed_o.jpg

Then I painted all around with gloss varnish and started applying decals. I used the squadron emblem from Revell kit (from drawer) and all other decals are by Techmod from their improved set. This scheme is not there, but there are characters H black and white as well as F1 codes.

I used only stenils from Techmod set, the Airfix has more of them. I general I think that human life (especially mine) is not that long to apply all possible stencils on model ;) ....

Then I sealed decals with next coat of gloss varnish (Tamiya acryl) and applied matt varnish (Vallejo) and made some weathering.

I put the photos of K and Z into Gallery, here just one for each:

Some progress could be noticed also for P, but I did not finished her in time...

Better quality y day light photos I will give on RFI soon.

Details of the scheme of Do 17P 6M+GK, which I want to model, were discussed here:

I would like to express my deep gratitude to all who share with me with their knowledge on this machine, first of all to  @G.R.Morrison for his input.

I am applying declas

I have found in me resources red "G" with white outline no the plain one, so I will have to remove some way this outline...

I will continue

I have over painted with red the white outline of "G". Added some decals including serial "153" on nose (accordingly to photos on both sides) and made brush painting (on decal) of geschwader emblem (only on one side - also accordingly to photos). Looking more carefully on photos of 6M+GK I noticed, that the yellow on cowlings do not include to gills - they are in camo colors, so I introduced this to model

I secured the decals with glossy varnish and finally coated with mat varnish:

I have to add DF-loop on top and aerial on a bottom sides, some weathering and it will be the end...

It is a pity that you did not make it within the STGB deadline.

It came out better than his -17K RS stablemate and is certainly more interesting (i.e. less common) than the Airfix -17Z.

One of the best 1:72 Do-17s I have ever seen.

Cheers

Michael
