A triple Do 17 build: K, P & Z, all in 1/72

Hi,

This seems to be a good opportunity to reduce my stash by all three Do 17 s present there. They are:

1. Airfix Do 17 Z

2. RS Do 17 K (long nacelles)

3. RS Do 17 P

The boxes:

An their contents:

52030533175_c55e5d4c08_o.jpg

The "Z" I want to do from BoB or France, nevertheless from 1940, western front.

The K will be Yugoslavian, but I am not decided yet if the one from times of Kingdom of Y., Croatia or partizan/end of war...

The P will be from Balkans 1941,

They will complete what I have so far on shelves:

1. SCW Do 17 F

2. Luftwaffe Do 215 B5

3&4. Two Do 217s

I a bit apologize, that I will do them mostly OOB and that I will not start very rapidly since I have now 5 kits on the workbench....

To be continued

Regards

Thnaks for encouraging! I took frame out of boxes yesterday.

First of all both RS kits has a lot of push out of mold unwanted additions and some more without explanation, generally parts require pre-treatment:

52045587609_d7468291b5_o.jpg

The "long nacelles" Yugoslavian K requires surgery on wings. I have to cut out the flaps areas and replace them by provided in kit fragments:

52044292897_507bcbfe29_o.jpg

They did not went perfectly so some filler/sanding will be needed

Here a comparison of shapes of wings fro P and K, both by RS

52045333691_94019d37d3_o.jpg

I applied Humbrol body putty

52045334006_4afa3ea7a0_o.jpg

52045388478_72cc88c736_o.jpg

Then I started to paint all inside parts with RLM-02 (Humbrol 240)

52045588144_1629bf7890_o.jpg

Of course, the details of inside in Airfix kit beat the RS by order of magnitude:

To be continue (but still besides them I have four other small kits to finish....)

On behalf of all the participants I hereby want to express my/our gratitude to you J-W, because without your input there would be no Do 17 family GB in our hands right now 🙂

The best of luck with your builds! V-P

Looks like it should be a fun build when I get around to starting my RS Do17F. I don't mind a short run kit really, shouldn't be too bad. That Airfix one looks so much better! Anyway, good start on your builds

Blimey, those RS kits look a bit scary. Still I suppose that's what filler and sanding sticks were made for.......

Anyway, looking forward this, I have a soft spot for the P variant - radials but still the slim nose.

Many thanks! I made some progress today (In Poland we have today a holiday - the Constitution day...)

I constructed nacelles in the "P" wing and started work on inside

52047270802_dd556f15a8_o.jpg

On "K" I did similar work but not that much advanced at the end...

52048562869_7ec77b46b7_o.jpg

In my bulb light the RLM-02 looks very greenish, but it is regular Humbrol 240, so it is just the illusion...

As you can see the wings are already sanded.

  • 2 weeks later...

I started also building of insides of Airfix Do 17 Z

But the Valentia has a priority since the Big British GB ends much earlier...

Hi,

For the last week I had a duty trip, so the progress is only from the week-end.

I worked on wings of "P" together with the u/c gondolas and engines nacelles.

52090859727_e298abf13f_o.jpg

52091889226_1e7ee68ceb_o.jpg

Similar with the second RS kit - the "K"

52090859582_9da1b8810a_o.jpg

52090859482_689f0efca9_o.jpg

I also continued filling up the cockpits of both RS kits:

52092131959_948096b124_o.jpg

However majority of work was on Airfix 'Z". Starting from the same (nacelles/gondolas):

52091907013_bbb3530ba7_o.jpg

52090858882_17196eb446_o.jpg

And some more details:

52092392705_de8e7743f9_o.jpg

52090859232_30c85849d0_o.jpg

52091889366_a33cab1f15_o.jpg

I am considering some kitbashing. I've read once a review of Airfix Do 17 Z  kit in which two problems were addressed:

1. To flat nose glazing

2. to narrow (to small chord) of propellers

Since some 15 years ago I did the Do 215 B5 conversion from Monogram /Revell Do 17 a glass nose and props (as well as engines) left with me.

I think I can use them here,

Please have a look (on left Monogram/Revell. on right Airfix):

or here: (bottom to bottom) :

52092132604_98039d48a1_o.jpg

How do you think? Is it really a true that the  flaws like that are present in Airfix kit?

I was going through photos of Do 17 Z in net and came to the "working conclusions" (so - it is my current opinion which can be changed if someone will give good arguments)

1. The front canopy is better shaped in Mionogram/Revell kit than in Airfix, where it seems to be too shallow. I based it for example on such  photos:

https://www.flying-tigers.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/d1-On-March-7th-1945-a-Finnish-Do-17-was-forced-to-land-at-Kalixfors-.jpg

https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-HJ-ohAZ4L9g/VtyO8Y3b9KI/AAAAAAAAWAU/m-X0SveFSpU/s1600/1Do17cockpit.jpg

2. However, the propeller blades which are visible much narrow then those of Monogram/Revell kit are rather correct:

https://www.worldwarphotos.info/wp-content/gallery/germany/aircrafts/dornier_do17/Dornier_Do17_Z_of_5-KG_3.jpg

https://www.worldwarphotos.info/wp-content/gallery/germany/aircrafts/dornier_do17/Dornier_Do_17_Z_summer_1940.jpg

So from my idea of kitbashing only the front canopy will be used from Revell/Monogram kit  in the Airfix Do 17Z...

Hi

I made a montage of engines in Airfix "Z". It requires only small adjustments .

52099569844_07dbd06454_o.jpg

52099569969_090be5c46b_o.jpg

I started work on engines in RS "K" as well

52099356573_ab8202a467_o.jpg

I decided to glue fuselage halves together and to add further inside elements already to glued fuselage

Hi,

I focused on Do 17K today

Yesterday I glued wings and fuselage together. I have to align fuselage and wings surfaced using a kind of  bar clamp

 52102670567_c64c5ee6ac_o.jpg

Then I have to use filler. Today I sanded all it

52104205075_95ffa23b37_o.jpg

Some work on engines:

52103948174_5d3492eb3b_o.jpg

I drilled through the resin central part to make room for a propeller shaft.

The propellers (two different pitch, typical for GR engines)

52103730388_12e1ec1602_o.jpg

The Do 17P had some progress as well, a day or two delayed compared to "K". I glued fuselage halves togetehr, before it drilled a circle window opening in fuselage (as was marked)

Hi,

I did some progress with Valentia (Big British GB) today, so a progress with Dorniers is small...

I glued fuselage and wings together in "P"

52105777513_103745ffe4_o.jpg

That is all for now.

As you can see I am re-using tape, just to save the planet (and my wallet too...)

A progress report for today.

I made rotating props of "K" and installing engines as well as clear parts (painted with diluted gloss varnish - acrylic one by Tamiya)

52125350935_e3174e52c0_o.jpg

52125351095_b94d03befa_o.jpg

Similar with Z - I installed clear parts

52123826482_f8ba3efdd8_o.jpg

52123826372_5705d5e8e4_o.jpg

I quit the idea of kitbushing - there is not confirmation, that Airfix kit has any shape problems... And Monogram for sure at leas has too long wing chord.

In case of P a small delay can be observed:

Hi,

I was working on engines in "P" - I drilled out to install a shafts for propellers (secured in back side)

52130047391_4bab080af8_o.jpg

Then I glued cowlings, installed carburetor air intakes and painted first yellow coat. Then I glued the props

52130280199_39c38cb06d_o.jpg

On K i did small progress filling up a bit the surrounding of front window from bottom side. I installed also a landing lamp

52130063683_767c280343_o.jpg

With Z I also worked on props

52130045856_684e64a9ea_o.jpg

Basically, to end gluing the u/c left only. IN WW2 section I asked a question on scheme of P. I am not sure in the MG on front & bottom side - how exactly it was mounted, in which window?

To be cont.
