They're not sighting lines for bombing but for navigation, I believe the way it worked is that you dropped a smoke marker and measured wind-drift from that :)

Hi Stew,

 

Yes, that is what I had heard as well. They were usually red on grey painted planes and white on green, though could also be black or red with white outlines depending on the camo scheme, and both my Val and Jake kits came with them. The old article in SAMI says they were used on planes operating over the sea and were at 5o intervals radiating from a point in the observer's rear cockpit. Some dive bombers also had dive angle lines under the pilot's canopy.
