McDonnell Douglas DC-10-30, N144AA, American Airlines, 1988

Recommended Posts

For a quick build of a kit I bought as an eBay bargain I’m very pleased with this. The kit dates from 1980 but mostly fitted together really well despite its age.

I filled and sanded over the windows and used decals instead, but otherwise it’s out of the box.

Thanks gents, that’s very nice of you to say.

@Bertie Psmith I think you’d see a sub-standard one if you looked too closely, I think in this instance the camera has done it a favour! I think because it’s an all-over finish with straight lines it’s possibly a bit easier to spray than camo? And the decals always help.

Very neat DC-10.Looks good in AA livery as well.

If I remember correctly,it was almos 30 years ago since I built the Airfix DC-10,she doesnt exist anymore, might be the time now to take one out of my stash in due time😉

Thanks for sharing

PS: Is that the FROG/Ark Model Boeing 707 kit that sits next to the DC-10 ?

Thanks for the comments chaps, really very much appreciated!

@Alex1978, the 707 is actually the old Airfix ‘Sky King’ kit with 26 Decals. It’s probably just my build that makes it look like a Frog kit!

That was not meant in a bad way.

I have built the old FROG/Ark Models kit in PanAm livery as well,it looks very similar, hence my question.😉

Its a very nice looking model as well,I have 3 of those Airfix kits under construction, albeit stalled them since a while because of their questionable fit...

@Alex1978 are those Frog kits any good, better than the Airfix one do you think? I might try one of those if it’s better than Airfix, which like you say wasn’t a great fit from what I remember!

The FROG kit is older than the Airfix kit and features a smaller tail than the other versions.

It represents more or less a 707-100 sort of,whereas the Airfix kit is a -400.

Compared to the Airfix kit,the FROG version is less detailed and in some areas very crude,so the Airfix one might still be the better choice of the 2.

If you want a "good" injection moulded kit,I would opt for the Minicraft 707s,they are not without issues but with some care and a replacement cockpit canopy,it can be turned into a good looking model.

If you strive for accuracy, the Authentic Airliners resin kit is the one to go for,but its quite pricey, not always available and resin is not every ones cup of tea.

Here a pic of the FROG/ArkModels 707
