In a look at some VF-194 pictures I didn't see any side number or tail code on the lower surfaces either but they didn't show the complete underside. They are pretty consistently present on F4Us and F9Fs in the air group. More like guidelines, really...

to have a slightly different diversion from the usual all bombs loadout, we decided to mount napalm tanks to the inner pylons, using leftovers form an unfinished Trumpeter RF-80 kit

I’m late to the party but always been a sucker for a sky raider. Have the Tamiya 1:48 Airforce variant in the stash - you are inspiring me to dust it down !! 
 

(After checking again - I ordered the NAVY version - showing my memory does not equal my stash !!)
