I believe it is a protected version of the KAMAZ 63501 8x8 truck.  Since the dissolution of the Soviet Union the Russian and Ukrainian defence industries have operated separately and in competition in world markets, and KAMAZ is Ukrainian.  They have enjoyed considerable export success with their military trucks.  Ukraine would not willingly use a Russian chassis when it makes its own.

These 2 countries have been trying to "nationalise" their military equipment inventories by becoming less dependent on each other.  Ukraine for example sold off its Russian-made T-72s in favour of the domestic T-64/80/84 line.  Russia has been reducing its use of Ukrainian-made T-64s and T-80s and to be honest I was surprised to see so many still in use.

The T 80 is a Russian tank produced at Omsk, although the Ukrainians did produce the UD version and later on to the T 84 and Opelot, the T 64s on the Russian side belong to DNR and LPR and are of either Russian or Ukrainian stock.

most of the russian trucks on the news are kamaz ones.

Sorry to disagree but Kamaz is a Russian company not Ukrainian. Its based in Naberezhnye Chelny, which is in Tatarstan (A Russian republic).

Maybe you are thinking about KrAZ. Thats Ukrainian.

The first truck is a Tatra 815 8x8 which is not Russian or Ukrainian but Czech.
