1/48 Mirage F1AZ - ESCI

Recommended Posts

Here's my depiction of a SAAF Mirage F1AZ of 1 Squadron during the 1980’s.

The old ESCI kit from 1984 was used as a base and the following aftermarket sets were added:

  • ScaleWorx (SW48-07) – Mirage F1AZ conversion kit
  • L'Arsenal Aero (AC 48 46) - ALKAN 915 and 916 pylons for Mirage F1
  • Eduard (48799) - Mirage F.1B exterior
  • Master (AM-48-030) - Dassault Mirage 3/5 Pitot tube
  • Pavla Models (S48036) - MB.Mk 4-FIRM4 ejection seat
  • ResKit (RSU48-0038) - Dassault Mirage F1 exhaust nozzle
  • Rafalik (RS006) - Mirage F1 wheel wells and doors
  • ResKit (RS48-0060) - Matra-155 Rocket launcher POD
  • Eduard (648322) - Matra R-550 Magic
  • ResKit (RS48-0035) - Dassault Mirage F1 wheels set
  • Eagle Strike Productions decals (48254) - Mirage F1 Part 1
  • FFSMC Productions decals - SAAF 1/48 "SAAF Mirage F1AZ et F1CZ"
  • Main Colors - Hataka Hobby (HTK-CS50) South African Air Force paint set vol. 1

Painting was done using Hataka lacquers from the South African Air Force paint set, the main colours are Deep Buff (C204), Olive Drab (C146) and the underside Light Admiralty Grey (C205). The whole aircraft was then finished with a coat of Tamiya semi-gloss varnish.

Very nice Mirage F1AZ ! 👍 Great improvement of the original model !!

However, doesn't the ScaleWorx conversion include new instrument panel specifically for Mirage F1AZ ? 🤔🤨

For comparison, in Mirage F1AZ, the scope is located in the middle of the IP (here hidden by this red protection), just behind the stick, not on the right side:

@ eclipse - I bought the ScaleWorx set 2nd hand and it was missing the instrument panels. So I used the next best one which was the Edward PE set which I realize isn't 100% correct. So it's just us modellers who knows this little detail, most people won't know the difference 😉.

Great show and a huge amount of work involved!

But it definitely was worth it.

Congratulations/

Great result!!! :partytime:

What did you use as outer wing pylons? The are not from the kit, aren't they?

Love you rocket pods!!

I did a late AZ last year with the Scaleworx conversion :).. I liked it a lot

But you even improved on that with all the AM ... :)

what did you use the PE set for?

  • Celliers changed the title to 1/48 Mirage F1AZ - ESCI

Wow! That's a stunning build. Very inspired to build a South African one myself. Hard to believe it's the old Esci kit... although having said that some of them are quite nice for their era. Did you rescribe this or did it come with engraved details?

Very very nice! 😃

It's a pity that someone sold you an incomplete conversion set, because it would have been even nicer with the F-1AZ photo-etched instrument panel and corrected vac-form canopy, which addresses the too long and wide windshield of the ESCI/Italeri kit. Then again, you added so many other really sweet goodies, that it may be overlooked.

Really fantastic work , all AM you used raised the bar in this Mirage F1-AZ kit from ESCI.

I liked the exhaust nozzle, MLG bays and NLG and tires.

Congratulations

Amazing conversion! I have the same kit with the ScaleWorx conversion kit at home but my skills aren't quite good enough to do it just justice like you have. Phenomenal job! Did you scratch build the air brakes? Or was that included in the Eduard F1B exterior kit?
