Dornier Do 17 Z-2 U5+BH (buildthread)

1./KG 2 "Holzhammer", Greece 5/1941

ICM 🇺🇦 1:72 scale kit #72304 - nothing but pure joy to build!

Out-of-the-box build using Peewit canopy mask set

Brush painted testing Revell supermarket enamels, they were 👍

ICM kit supplied decals + spares box tail insignias

IMG_20220528_125147

Glory to the manufacturing nation of this kit! There's a small wrinkle in the Staffelstreife below the canopy, but I'll live with it. I hate dealing with anything painted white!

IMG_20220528_125116

Compare the colours in this pic with the last one in the build thread... funny how different they look now, outside in direct sunlight.

IMG_20220528_124948

That's all Revell matt enamel but quickly polished with an old toothbrush. It breaks up the contrast in the splinter scheme and helps avoid silvering of the decals too.

IMG_20220528_125015

Down below everything looks too clean, I didn't want to add any weathering. The map is from a Reader's Digest Atlas and probably 50 years old - and with 🇫🇮 names.

IMG_20220528_124857

One last pic. She's already tucked away in my model cabinet, and shall remain there to be forgotten amongst her kin. Thank you Enzo for setting this up for us! V-P

Dornier Do17 Z10 Nachtjager

Always an enjoyable build with ICM. I've presented this aircraft as one that stayed in service far beyond its use by date thus giving me an opportunity to develop my weathering techniques. I hope I've portrayed that in scale.

Sometime in the late 1990's I bought a batch of 3 Italeri kits of Luftwaffe bombers - Ju 188, He 111 and Do 217K-1, and this GB finally gave me the incentive to make a start on the latter. Demand for the BMW radial engines for Fw 190 production meant that there was only a relatively short production run of K series bombers, before it switched to the DB603 inline powered M model which shared the same fuselage etc complete with the modified "glasshouse" nose. Finding info on the K was not as easy as it might have been as the Do 217 seems to be something of a "forgotten" plane, even though it was a sound enough design with reasonable performance, but by the time it entered service the Battle of Britain was over, and the need for bombers was somewhat reduced. The kit is not bad - a bit basic by modern standards but I had few problems with it. I have ended up painting it in the markings of KG.66 which used it for about a year in limited numbers for night raids on the UK and probably against shipping.

Here is a link to the build thread.

And here is my model.

In his book on captured Luftwaffe planes, the late Eric Brown described it as, by comparison with the slim Do 17 from which it was derived, looking rather matronly, in fact several months pregnant, which I think is rather a good description.

In 1972 Airfix released their kit of the Do 17E/F and I built it shortly afterwards, but as I did not like the RLM 61/62/63/65 camo I did it in 70/71/65 with spurious markings. About 10 years ago I got the urge to do it properly so stripped off the paint, dismantled it and bought new paint from the White Ensign Colourcoats range. At one point I was thinking of cross-kitting it with my Frog Do 17Z to try and produce either a 17P or M radial engined version, but then things stalled as they do and it was left lying around gradually shedding bits until this GB came along. When I eventually dug out the remains it was missing quite a few parts – 2 seats, the guns, the instrument panel, an elevator actuating thingy and a propeller blade, and I had built it wheels up so it needed an undercarriage. With the help of my spares boxes and some after market wheels etc I have pretty much restored it to how it perhaps would have looked if I had done a better job on it first time round. I have based it on photos and other info of a very early Do 17E bomber flown by III/KG.255 "Alpen"  in 1937, with unfaded paint, no modified windscreen with an extra MG 15 fitted and the early style pitot head mounted on the canopy – later it was switched to the Port wing I believe. For its age the Airfix kit was actually pretty good but I added a bit more detail to the interior which was rather basic. It is now perhaps up to the standard of the much later RS kit, and probably rather easier to build from what other modellers in this STGB seem to have found.

Here is what I started with!

And here is how it looks now.

Better than I had hoped though not of course perfect.

It's taken me almost two months to get this finished...Maybe more.  Not sure.  My mojo has been affected by family health issues (since February) and the onslaught of summer tourism here which is absolutely ghastly.  Why people can't stay at home and enjoy themselves I'll never understand.  Anyway...the WiP is here...

No real issues once I switched kits.  All the paints are Vallejo Air and Vallejo Model...The build is OOB except for the decals.  Those are from the RSModel which was discarded.

Thank to the Mods and all the who cheered for me on the sidelines.  My modelling mojo really has been tested these past months but I feel I'm getting it back a bit.

For your delectation, here's my take on the Revell Do 17 Z-2

First released in by Monogram in 1969, its a simple kit with few parts.

It goes together nicely, considering the age of the tooling and with a little care and attention could build up into a decent model.

I did neither and still got a relatively OK result
