Aoshima 1/32 Hino HH tractor - FINISHED

I'll be starting with this smal(ler) scale tractor.

I rather like the shape of the cab and will be painting it yellow as well, I like the look of it. At first glance the parts look very good, I've never built an Aoshima kit before.

I actually like the 1/32 scale as well, the 1/24 trucks can take up some space. This is still large enough for some detailing, which I probably won't be doing very much of. I'm in a phase of "let's get some stuff built". I'm hoping to do a 1/24 Fuso later on.

Welcome along Jeroen, can't have a GB without you and one of your trucks!

Though I was hoping you'd be building the outlandish chrome beast you teased use with earlier....... though if you go quick your could always build that one as well! :D

No, it'll be great as usual to see you work you magic on another truck build, know it'll be a popular one to follow

Good luck with this one, am all ready to follow this one...

I can't let a GB start slip by unnoticed so I'll be making a start on this today. I still can't believe I got this kit for only €20, that was a lucky find for sure.

I'll be going for the box art look, with the yellow cab. I'm not sure about the silver stripes yet though, they're decals and they look a bit bland. Maybe I'll paint some other pattern, maybe I'll stick with the yellow. I will be going with the chrome hubcaps, but I don't think I'll be leaving the chequer plate black although it does look nice on the box art.

Let's check what's in the box.

Here's chassis stuff, with the chequer plated mudguards and chassis top.

More chassis and engine.

20220417080255-b26d5e25-me.jpg

The parts look crisp and clean and very nicely detailed. Look at this fuel pump, I've never even seen detail like this on a 1/24 scale kit.

20220417082128-9ee4c591-me.jpg

Axle stuff.

20220417080255-20ca635b-me.jpg

Fuel tanks and fifth wheel.

20220417080253-aa8e10a9-me.jpg

Wheels and chromed hubcaps, grille and front bumper. These will of course be dechromed and sprayed with my new favourite Greenstuffworld Chrome.

20220417080255-092320ae-me.jpg

Cab interior.

20220417080255-8c99bb2c-me.jpg

Cab exterior. There's another front bumper on here I think.

20220417080253-19185fa6-me.jpg

The cab itself. A nice looking, bit unusual, shape. Which is why I like it.

20220417080253-fe88e7fc-me.jpg

Decals, a chrome sticker and some rubbery stuff, I have no idea yet what that's for.

20220417080256-d839f285-me.jpg

Clear parts.

20220417082128-b02dc3ef-me.jpg

Poly caps, axles, and 2 pins or something.

20220417080253-c70bae3b-me.jpg

And finally a sprue with weird chrome parts.

20220417080254-56133e93-me.jpg

Look at this.

These will not be making it to the finished model. Sorry Rich 🙂

Anyway, I think I'm going to have fun with this one, this looks like a great kit. Like I said, it was a bargain. More later!

Oh right, I forgot there's a stack of tyres as well. I'm not a fan of rubber or vinyl tyres per se, but these look ok.

Some, but not a lot, of detail on the sides but the thread is good and most importantly, no annoying mould lines down the middle.

So far, I'm loving this kit. The chassis has an inner and outer frame.

And I'll say that this is one of the best OOB detailed engines I've ever built on a kit.

That's it for now, I'm going outside. The weather is absolutely gorgeous.

You're not wrong about the detail, it' amazingly crisp and detailed, you are right on a lot of 1/24th vehicles you don't get this level of detail.

I got quite a bit done over the last couple of days. Today was a day off for us so I spent some time at the bench. I must say, this kit is very well engineered and builds really nicely. The parts need very little, if any, cleanup and everything fits.

I've said it before, I love this scale. I'll be on the hunt for more of these Aoshima kits.

I finished the front axle assembly and glued on the radiator, air cleaner and that white thing as well. The engine itself is only dry fitted, I will paint it separately.

20220418214501-b938fea0-me.jpg

Look at that steering assembly.

20220418214501-c50e38d4-me.jpg

I built some sub assemblies like air tanks, battery box (which even has cables moulded on), rear axles.

20220418214502-f5501345-me.jpg

And I started on the bigger stuff as well.

20220418214501-d4ee684b-me.jpg

The interior is simple which suits me just fine, I've discovered that I usually don't care much for interiors.

I've built up the cab as well, there's quite a few parts on there. Some small fitments issues here, I'll have to check what's going on at the corner(s).

20220418214502-18768a66-me.jpg

The instructions have you put in the interior first, then build up the cab around it. I don't like that, I want to paint the cab as a whole and not fiddle with painted parts and/or mask the windows.

However, it doesn't fit like this, but it will be just a matter of removing some material from the inside of the cab and glueing in some other form of support.

So this was the situation at the front left and right corners.

20220419215847-4b3daece-me.jpg

I thought this looked really odd so I went ahead and did something about it, resulting in this.

20220419215848-4651fd41-me.jpg

I was pretty happy with that, however... literally as I was posting this it hit me what that ledge was for... it was to rest the left and right indicator lights on.... Man, I can't believe I didn't think of that. I should have suspected something, as this was the only place on the build so far where the fit seemed not good. But it was intentional...

So, that was a bit silly, but I do like my result and the indicator lights will be fine as well. No harm done, but that will teach me to bring memories of ill-fitting kits to an Aoshima build... my apologies, guys at Aoshima! 🙂

The rear of the cab got some more parts added to it.

20220419215846-43afe34b-me.jpg

I'm going to end with yet another example of how detailed this kit is. I've never seen a kingpin release mechanism modelled like this on a 1/24 scale kit.

20220419215847-a3092bf9-me.jpg

This is 5 parts for the fifth wheel, and 3 more for its frame, which makes 8 parts for the fifth wheel assembly.

20220419215847-e27d3ec0-me.jpg

With bolt heads and everything. Very nice.

I'm still not 100% what you "corrected" on the cab corner...but will say it looks good!

You're right there is some nice detail on that 5th wheel.

Took me ages to figure it out but I think if you look at first photo just below the small vertical rectangular recess on the corners the section below does not have same profile. I think these have been fettled down so the profiles match.

You're right! I realize it must have been obvious to me because I knew where to look!

It used to be like this:

Rubber sheet for mud flaps possibly?

Yes, I've discovered that this is indeed what they're for. I haven't made them yet but it should look more realistic than a piece of card.

AAAAAARRRrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!  Now I see it!!!

So it was originally meant to sort of match the profile of the indicator, and you sanded it off....... nice!  :D    At least only you will notice.......

You could always use some of those nice chromy bits to help cover it up! :D

Don't you wish I'd go away sometimes! :D

A bit late for the show Jeroen but liking what you've done so far.

I never built a truck but that one seems really nicely detailed indeed.

On your way to give us another stunner.

Also - don't ask me why I've got this feeling - when looking at the box art, it "smells" Japanese all over.

Cheers.

Pat.

Hi Pat, well not that late, still lots to do! The cab's shape is quite different from what we're used to see here so yes, definitely a different "vibe" so to speak.

The profile looks very similar to some Japanese trains, with the blunt snout and the slope backwards to the top of the cab. I always see something snakelike in that (but maybe that's just the tablets

  • 3 weeks later...

Having just finished a very yellow build for Big & British, I thought I'd turn my attention back to the Hino which will be a yellow build as well. I felt like painting tonight so my goal was to have the cab in paint. But, no. That was before I realized that all the grab handles and mirror stalks should be body colour as well so these need to be on the body before paint or I'll never get them painted and glued as nicely as they are now. Just have to be very very careful with this cab from now on. We'll see about that!

Very intricate design on the left hand mirror(s).

Not a whole lot to report, but I did get to do some painting. Well, priming.

20220513201317-7c322a3b-me.jpg

Chassis parts in black, interior and engine in grey and the cab first grey, then white because I want the yellow as bright as possible. Yes, I know what you're going to say @Hockeyboy76, but I don't have it. You have bought all the pink primer.

I primed the hubcaps in gloss black because they're going to be chrome.

The chassis itself is about done as well so that's in primer next. But first I'll paint the cab, after lightly sanding some spots on the primer.

Oh, right, did I tell you it would be yellow? I might have mentioned it.

20220513221316-47357b2a-me.jpg

This Tamiya X-8 is called Lemon Yellow for a reason. It's actually a good covering yellow, this is just 2 coats.

Alright, done for today. More on the day after tomorrow.
