gee the finish on the yellow is great, well done!!

Though I did think you were tempting fate adding all those smaller bit.

Strangely you're right, priming with grey first then white for these lighter/brighter gloss colours, rather than just priming white. I think it might be because the grey underneath helps give the white depth...if you know what i meant.

Anyway really makes that yellow pop and look amazing!

Also, you can't see what you're doing when priming white on white, and the white primer really needs something to stick to as well. I use the mr surfacer primers and covering the grey with white is never a problem with that stuff.

OK so since this kit is pretty nicely detailed it really does call for some additional work. Again, something which I've never seen on a 1/24 scale kit (where it would be much easier to do all this!).

20220515074507-c7756c3d-me.jpg

There's connectors on the air tanks, 8 of them no less.

20220515074506-33a70a19-me.jpg

However, as they are it's impossible to wire (or rather, hose) them.

20220515074506-61ac4a95-me.jpg

The ends are too small to drill and to large to slide hollow tubing over.

First, an amputation. Sorry, not a very good photo, it didn't want to lie still to get its picture taken 🙂

20220515074506-9c755b51-me.jpg

Now you take those nice little Meng hexagon bolts, which you can drill while they're still attached, which in turn makes it easier to get a centered hole.

20220515074507-2a7fbe55-me.jpg

Glue in a length of tubing using thin CA

20220515074507-02339ce9-me.jpg

Slice off those bolts and glue them to the air connector, this time with regular model glue. That looks pretty decent.

20220515074507-87a2af41-me.jpg

Now... repeat this procedure... but first, breakfast.

that's very clever!

To be honest, it's the first time I've done it like this. I usually do it with alu tube, but it's very difficult to cut consistent lengths and whatnot. Plus you lose half of them to the bench and carpet monsters! I will use the "meng method" from now on as I have lots of those bolts. I have a hex punch as well but using just that it's not easy to punch a bolt, then drill it, or the other way around. If I run out of the Meng bolts I will punch new ones and glue them to a piece of card before drilling them.

Anyway, I decided 4 connectors is quite enough. I'll save the rest in my air parts baggie.

This will be covered by checker plate! But you should be able to see some wiring. I'll make some brake lines next and see what else I can wire up. Don't want to go all out because of the checker plate covering. Might do a bit of wiring on the engine as well, you may be able to see some of it from the back of the cab.

The plumbing is done as far as I'm concerned. Not based on anything from real lift but there's something to see at least.

The air tanks.

Front break lines.

Rear break lines, which will partly be covered by the fifth wheel assembly.

That's it for today. Work on the chassis is done, it's ready for paint. Job for tomorrow I think. I've assembled a bunch of other stuff as well so the building is mostly done.

I had a good painting session yesterday evening. But before I could start painting the chassis, I checked whether all 6 wheels touch base.

20220517164251-99bb3078-me.jpg

They do. There was still some movement in the rear bogie so I was able to glue it down in the correct position. The tyres lack detail on the side but they are quite nice regardless, with no seams and nice tread.

20220517164251-30ddfef2-me.jpg

The sides are nicely rounded, they look pretty realistic. All they need is a little sanding to take the shine off.

Chassis in Semi Gloss Black.

Same for the other chassis parts and wheels.

20220517164251-996d010e-me.jpg

I think the interior should look nice in brown, maybe a tad lighter or darker for the seats.

I wasn't entirely happy with the finish on the cab. I removed one of the grab handles on the front because I want to apply lettering and it was in the way. Also, the paint was a little rough in some spots, with a bit too many specks of dust. I sanded some of it, primed some of it and then shot a lighter shade of yellow on it. I added a little more than 1 part of white to 3 parts yellow. Just a tad. Nice and bright now 😎

20220518222142-e761ab1b-me.jpg

I also chromed the hubcabs. I'd primed them with Alclad gloss black earlier and now I shot 1 coat of Greenstuffworld chrome on it. You have to spray this stuff very lightly, just a once over to see what it does.

It does this:

20220518222142-05315c7f-me.jpg

It's really nice stuff. Dries quickly too. I already buffed it some.

20220518222142-47c1acad-me.jpg

I'll see how it looks in natural light tomorrow. Might spray one more coat.

I did spray one more coat of the chrome paint. Looks good now.

20220519191508-a25c2130-me.jpg

Once it dries, I will buff it and it will be nice and shiny.

I also did my lettering and logo's, again using my Silhouette cutter. Another addition to the Van Dordt fleet! The masking around the vinyl stencils was a bit sketchy though.

20220519191509-51eb2bd5-me.jpg

But I sprayed very carefully and managed to pull it off. Both the procedure and the masking, that is 🙂

I can clearcoat this tomorrow.

that has come on very nice indeed

I used to often think, oh i would just love to build something different (lorry, car, plane), purchase, open, start, get bored, as to why I have no idea, so now i just admire others work

Thanks. I completely understand, I have the same with aircraft. I like to build one every now and then (well, I completed one and the other has been almost done for a long time), because it's something different, but they don't "click" for me like  trucks do.

I clearcoated all the parts this morning, except for the engine which I hadn't painted yet, but now I did.

20220521095226-1cdc57b5-me.jpg

Cab is looking good.

I found some pics of a Hino engine online and some were completely metal, others were a little off the red in the direction of orange. So that's what I did.

20220521095226-1f32610c-me.jpg

Transmission and upper half of the engine will receive metal coloured paint, I'll brush that on. It will make a nice contrast with the black and yellow.

It's now the second time I broke this "coathanger" off... I think I'll replace it with some brass rod. If you're not sure about what I mean (this pic is a little off), take a look at the first picture in this post and you'll see.

I didn't do a whole lot yesterday as the weather was just too good to stay indoors. But I did manage to make a new coathanger.

20220523140218-2c01e6a0-me.jpg

I finished the wheels.

20220523140218-a82616f8-me.jpg

And made a start on wiring the fuel pump with lead wire. Also, some metal colour on parts of the engine, there's more to be done and I'll do that before finishing the wiring.

20220523140218-45f65415-me.jpg

Lastly, I put the windows in the cab and put decals on the dashboard but didn't take a picture of that.

Major update this evening, things were flying. I finished painting the engine, it sort of looks like the real thing, but it's enough for me.

20220523222527-01820848-me.jpg

There's all kinds of stubs on the transmission to take more wiring but I couldn't be bothered as nothing will be seen.

With that out of the way, I fitted the engine in the chassis, and then glued on some more major components. Well, that's about all major components except for the cab.

20220523222527-29d5c5d9-me.jpg

I think the engine looks pretty decent, mounted like this.

20220523222527-b3fed1fa-me.jpg

I like the black checker plate too, it looks different. This will be a nice black and yellow combination, my second build in a row with these colours.

Goal for tonight was getting the cab on the chassis. To be able to do that, I had to put the interior in first. Bit tricky, because I had completely assembled the cab before painting I had to cut small triangles off the interior's left and right front corners. Not too bad though, I've done worse!

20220524221519-d246b9b1-me.jpg

So, it fits in there, without glue even.

20220524221519-ad3cd585-me.jpg

Then, some trouble. Although the cab appears to be sitting more or less correctly, it's actually not touching the rear mounts at all. There's material in the way.

20220524221520-c3df19dd-me.jpg

I shaved some off. No dice yet.

20220524221518-bb75fee4-me.jpg

In the end I cut the little triangular parts off that yellow bracket. That did the trick.

20220524221518-3e4514af-me.jpg

Not too pretty though, but after a touch up of the black parts it's ok.

20220524221519-d9da24cf-me.jpg

Pretty cool!

20220524221518-2bb469f7-me.jpg

Now on to final assembly. Mirrors, wipers, grill, bumper, lights, mud flaps. That's about it. And some suzi cables.

I've given the Hino a face. Almost done on this side.

20220527083815-1164968e-me.jpg

Mudflaps are on too. That rubber sheet is great, I still have some left for other builds. Way more realistic than the usual plastic ones provided in most kits.

Very nice "truckin'" Jeroen. Your solution for plumbing the air tanks was really clever.

Still not ready myself for a truck but you're definitely the one whose builds could change my mind.

Cheers.

Pat.

Today will see the Hino finished. I'm sort of experimenting with license plates. I tried printing decals once but it wasn't a complete success, to use some classic understatement. Since then I purchased a Silhouette cutter with which I mostly cut stencils for the Van Dordt lettering and such. I wanted to try this out for the license plates. This kit only provides some "Hino" plates, and generic Japanese plates with only 1 digit filled out. I browsed through my spare decals but they're also not of much use, I have some old blue Dutch plates but they have silly combinations. And my stash of 1/32 decals is quite small anyway. So the plan is to make my own using the cutter.

I painted a piece of sheet in more or less "license plate" colour, which is to say, a little off the bright yellow. I can use this for a lot of plates. I draw rectangles in the correct size on the piece.

20220529084937-52257714-me.jpg

And place the stencil in those boxes.

20220529084937-ea407dbe-me.jpg

I know, I could also do without the squares at this point but I think doing it the other way around may have more chance of damaging the paint. I cut out the piece of sheet and sprayed semi gloss black.

20220529084936-5f292a65-me.jpg

You can see that the cutter is not precise enough in this scale, the "X" looks a bit funky and the upper "V" is clearly better than the lower one. Also, the lower "J" is not quite as good as the upper. I think it's fine if you don't look too closely 🙂 ... I usually weather the trucks anyway, not this one though. I won't be using the "X" on the plates anymore, that's for sure, but maybe they'll be better in 1/24 scale. I'll have to see. The font is the actual Dutch license plate font, made by a hobbyist.
