Mig-21bis, Black 665, 21 Fighter Reg. 665 San Antonio de Los Banos, Cuba, Italeri 1/72nd scale...

This will be my last for this GB, and I hope to actually finish it.  I have a few other pots bubbling on the stove...May 15th...Hmmm...

I have been wanting a Cuban Mig for a while (the Angolan Mig doesn't count!) so this is a good one.  The Italeri kit looks basic but nice and the decals are from...I am not sure.  Anyway...

Sprue...

Decals plus a stencil sheet...

And a good profile from Wings Palette...

Very nice choice I do like this camouflage.

Thanks Dennis.  Here is the Eduard profile with the colour guide.  Thus is very helpful as it has the design for the wings as well, topside view as it were...

You’re becoming the MiG Master!

I'm humbled.  Thank you.  I am more of an obsessive modelling factory.  Never fear!  The next two weeks will have minimal time at the bench due to travel commitments.

I've begun.  It's not a complex kit and I have no confidence in the IP decal. I predict painting and dry brushing.   I do like the pilot so I will be using him.  Research says this aircraft was in Cuba in the early-to-mid-70s, so turquoise green interior it is!  My new favourite colour...

I managed to take care of a lot tonight.  As @modelling minion remarked, much quicker build than an Eduard, but still shapely and rewarding.

I swapped out the decal, which didn't stick, with paint.

Pilot..

The interior decals worked better since they were flat and I sealed them with matte spray.

Office, pilot, interior...

Snug as a bug...

Almost ready to close it up.  5-6 gms pf weight in the nose.

Wing halves ready...

Spine and rudder are attached.  No fit issues.  Clean lines and reasonably tight fit.  Only small amounts of PPP will be needed.

Stabilizers on, canopy readied.  Closed canopy folks.

That's it until Friday when I return from the the mainland.

Well it looks like you packed a weeks modelling into one day John, very nice work mate.

Enjoy your trip to the mainland.

Thanks.  I will.  And, yes...it's a quick build.

Yes...not a complex build.  If I had the notion, I could certainly invest in aftermarket goodies, but I am under a time constraint.

And this morning, I had some time before I had to go to the ferry, so I figured I would attach the wings, secure the canopy and take care of the underwing pylons, cannon and fin.  I will be able to prime it Friday and start the painting process during the weekend, I hope.

I will give it a fuel pod in the middle and the 4 K-13 rockets supplied.

You have done a great job on fitting the wings and tail, looks like very smooth joints.

Thanks Craig. It's an ok boxing if you're looking for a quick Mig-21 kit.

Has come together really well. Looks a decent kit. Safe travels, am looking forward to seeing this hit the paint stage!

Me too!  The camo alone is worth the time.

I didn't know one could pack so much good work in so short a time.

Nice start and progress ..... I'm just needing more time to enjoy and digest the delicacies you're serving to us than you use to prepare them 😅

I wonder if one were to bash this and the Eduard MF kit could you do a better Bis ? The Eduards don't come in a Bis but everything they do is so nice just replace the MF spine with the Bis spine from this kit. They look to be swappable as they're both drop in piece's.

You might be on to something.  This is a very basic kit, with decent lines and good mouldings, far better and probably more accurate than the old Airfix kit.  I am sure there are aftermarket pieces, but your suggestion could solve the issue with what to do with all the extra Eduard pieces one might accumulate?  It could be a good GB subject--for a Kit Bash GB perhaps...?😃

Great choice of camo, Cuban Mig-21bis or R is probably the most visually entertaining type. I have a decal sheet for Cuban Migs from Aztec myself, but I decided to wait for Eduard to release their long planned Bis in 72nd... it should be out anytime in the next 10 years...🤣

Yeah right!  I think its really strange they haven't released this variant.

Here's what I have done tonight.  I am basically ready for paint now.  Lets see if I can get this done before I take of on Thursday.

Basic paint and primer on all the small parts.

I have attached all the pylons and very small intake ducts. I will wait until the aircraft if close to finished before I attach the pitot tube and the antennae.

I thought I remembered reading recently, I could be wrong here. But thought I read that Eduard will be releasing the Mig-21F13 sometime later this year or next then its the “Bis” series after that ? I believe it was in the Rumourmonger section ?

It will be time for the next MiG-21 GB once they do!
