Casey
Purpose: Re-create Humbrol range of paints using commercially available paints from a given vendor. Source of colors Reasoning: Needed an alternative for discontinued / health risk products. And I like math. Methodology: Custom implementation of two-flux Kubelka-Munk algorithm with measured model of Golden Fluid Acrylics. Paint mixing solves the minimum of perceptual difference between target paint and the mixture, prioritizing for small integer ratios of constituent paints. Target is a measured spectral data (see other posts). DE00 is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Color_difference#CIEDE2000 Some colors (like fluorescent paints and Bright Green (No 37)) are not represented very well. If you see high DE00, it is a poor fit. Ratios are given in mass not volume, but it should not be super big deal - the paints have similar density. To use in airbrush, use Golden Fluid Airbrush Medium, starting with 1:1 ratio. I find it works well with brush painting too and feeling similar to Vallejo Air in an airbrush. You can either use varnish or gloss/matt medium to bring it to a desired gloss/matt level. Data hidden in spoiler due to the volume. Using full range of Golden Fluid Acrylics - calculations based on MASS. Information about metallics Most metallics (minus those metalcote) are made with mica particles, which are sold in Golden Fluid range as Irididescent Pearl (fine) or as colored versions. It is fully possible to mix most of the metallics replacing part of white with this product. Alternatively, you may want to explore the full range of true metallics: Coarse iridescent stainless steel is made of iron, chromium and nickel particles for example and it is produces coarse metal layer. Micaeous Iron Oxide is made from hematite ore (iron ore) They also offer very good bronze/gold/silver metallics. Reasoning: Needed an alternative for discontinued / health risk products. And I like math. Paint mixing solves the minimum of perceptual difference between target paint and the mixture, prioritizing for small integer ratios of constituent paints. Target is a measured spectral data (see other posts). Of more use would be mixes like for actual colours, given how blinkin' awful many of the existing acrylic matches are for, obscure things like RAF Dark Green (eg Humbrol 30) and Dark Earth (eh Humbrol 29) etc etc..... the Humbrol paint range is wide, but lacks a lot of useful colours... Please see the RLM example on another post. 4 minutes ago, Troy Smith said: OK, how are the mixes supposed to work, done one sensitive scales? cheers T I did originals calculations with measurements taken on jewelry scale. I did checked those mixes using simply numbers as 'paint parts' and they are acceptable. The density of original paints is rather uniform (0.952g/ml with standard deviation of 0.081 from my measurements).
Jamie @ Sovereign Hobbies
Have you tested these? I do enjoy this sort of exercise but a couple of observations if I may: Firstly, ultramarine blue is a bit of a pain. I love the pigment and the colour and whilst it can be bought dry and as artists paints, it's been shunned by commercial paint pigment tint manufacturers. It's eluded me so far to the extent that I don't make a WWII submarine colour I really want to make because it can only be done with proper ultramarine and I can't get a compatible pigment tint for my composition. Secondly, whilst density of paint is fairly uniform, the staining power of different pigments most certainly is not, nor is it certain that the proportion of the paint mass which is that pigment is consistent - indeed some commercial paint manufacture software packages offer or indeed default in some cases to minimising the total injected pigment tint to achieve the target colour. This can be tested with a selection of model paints even from the same brand: one can mix one drop each of two paints and expect a colour half way between the two only to discover one colour absolutely steamrolls the other and the resultant mix looks very much more like one than the other. Lastly (ok, I said a couple), the pigmentation requirements are nominally calculated by the software using similar algorithms to achieve a target, but roughly half of our batches need manual intervention and adjustment after the machine has had its go at it and a physical sample of the result is measured. It's better than starting from scratch every time but the calculations aren't that reliable. There are small variables in various places. One of them we don't really have to worry about with the batch sizes we make is the minimum dose, which a modeller probably will have to worry about. How heavy is one drop? Despite the high precision of progressive cavity pumps and relatively large batches to make differences in injection quantities insignificant, we still get variations from one batch to the next as even the expensive high quality pigments vary from one batch to the next - not so much in their colour but their opacity as a liquid tint. Tiny differences make a surprisingly big difference to the result, especially where small quantities are called for in the recipe. 5
Casey
Thank you for the great feedback. I can only agree with everything you wrote in your post. The whole thing started for me as an interesting hobby excercise and by no means it is aimed to replace the professional paint making process. It was more of a result of an despair I faced while trying to use the original paint manufacturer products. You can think of it as of any other of "<paint vendor> mixes to achieve <some color>" charts that there are many online... Mine are just based on my personal math obsession. I tested some (I admit not all) of those recipes and the results were decent enough for me to decide to share. For small volume liquid dispensing I use micropipettes (and calculator). Also, I am comparing my results to the targetted paint manufacturer and their current consistency of color matching of batch-to-batch delivery process... And thanks to the myriad of variables it was never going to be as accurate as a validated batch of a paint delivered by an producer with proper equipment. But who knows, maybe I'll discover a genius way to calculate pigment tinting coefficient without spectrophotometer... Casey
FYI - I am still working on those. I've updated the recipes in this thread with my most recent math. It is an effort of producing of more than 1000 of paint swatches so far to provide the data to characterize the Golden pigments and the results are really good now. Here is an example of Humbrol 93 - desert yellow. It is one the 'difficult' colors to match since it correlates with human color sensitivity curve. My math results and suggested simple recipe And the reality (measurements from spectrophotometer of an original paint and the paint made from above recipe) The results are quite good. And this is how both colors look (real paints) as they are seen by spectrophotometer: The one on the left is original Humbrol, the one on the right is my mix. My work is currently based on following parts: Simulation of light behavior - paint is a semi-transparent medium of a different refraction index than air and all measurements need to factor that. This effects highly depends on the geometry of hardware used for measurements. Pigment characterization - to provide absorption / scattering coefficients for pigments at each wavelength. They both describe tinting strength too. Pigment mixing simulation - it gives me a spectral curve for any arbitrary mix of pigments Optimal pigment selection - to figure out the best combination of pigments that give the resulting color. This is a rabbit hole of fun! Perceptual curve-fitting - to use the data above to solve the 'how much of each pigment I need' question to re-create a paint that will be *seen* as same by humans, while not necessary being an exact copy. Exact curve-fitting - similar as above to get the closest possible representation using the pigments. It may sometimes be impossible or impractical since pigments vary. Paint above is also an good example of the perceptual curve fitting - the paints do differ in spectra but their perception is close. Their measured DE of my mix is 1.15 with the theoretical best being 0.42. Edited June 29, 2022 by Casey
sapperastro
Did you start this effort because of Humbrol quality decreasing and the line getting constantly cut?
