'Nisha' A Brixham Mumble Bee

Painting the bottom ....

Hull prepped.a few irregularities in the planking showing a working  boat. Hull colour Vallejo Black-grey

P1120621

P1120623

I'm hoping to show her as a working boat so I used a Chocolate brown to represent the tar anti fouling.

P1120630

To take away the monochrome colour I used Oil dots. Grey, white, yellow ochre and raw umber. Blended and washed out with white spirit.

(I did use smaller dots the next time)

P1120634

P1120636

P1120644

I feel I achieved the look I was after

P1120645

A nice contrast

Looking great how clean would these be below the waterline would they have a few barnacles on or would they be regularly cleaned up just a curious question. 🤔

Good question Keith..

The sailing trawlers were built for power/speed needed to pull the trawl through the water. Any growth on the bottom is going to have an effect on speed.

The quick way to clean the ladies bottom was to pass a burning pitch soaked torch along the skin. The notes I have don't say whether the shell fish was ready to eat.

As most of these boats were based in drying harbours I would guess it was fairly easy to keep on top of this chore. HTH

For sure, Kev!  Nice to follow along & see the aging & weathering techniques you're using & their outcomes.

What are they?

Strips either side of the keel that cover up the inner edges of the plans next to the keel, as I understand it, a model boat builders way of representing what would be carved into the sides of the keel to accommodate the edges of the planks next to the keel, I think.  Probably what rabbet planes take their name from, maybe.

That is looking a bit nice Kev, if I didn't have so much plastic in stock, I could be tempted by something like this. :)

I know that. I’ve known that for years. Even owned some old fashioned rabbet planes once. The thing I don’t know is why I asked the question 🤪

Slow but sure Kev!  2 steps forward, 1 step back.

I'll post an update soon

Liking that colour variance on the hull very much Kev, and that's with as I suspect the camera not even  picking up the full range of those subtle shifts in hue on the real thing. 👏

As you say...

I'm not a fan of large monochrome colours especially on my working boats

Thanks

Gidday Kev, I wouldn't have thought of them either. With my hair (or lack of) I don't actually stock them. I think that deck looks nice. Regards, Jeff.

Hello Kev, I do apologise for not seeing this build before, but I have come back to maritime at last!

These Vanguard Models kits do seem to be pretty good, don't they? I love what you have done, and hopefully I will remember some of your suggestions when I get to do something similar which I have my eye on, just need to save up!

All the best,

Ray

Welcome back to the real world Ray

I can't recommend Vanguard Models to highly for a first voyage into wood boat building

Keep on rigging

Thanks Kev! I have done some googling and found that they do seem to be pretty good, and also that they are a subsidiary of a firm just up the road from me. It is good to be back to reality with Endeavour, and I still have the Knight Templar to finish too - that will be a big return to the past if you know what I mean.

Cheers, Ray
