'Nisha' A Brixham Mumble Bee

Recommended Posts

Hi Folks,

I have returned after a holiday in Vehicle Modelling (non-military) building a Citroen 2CV Barn find, which has been relaxing and enjoyable but drawing to an end.

I've long wanted to build a wooden sailing fishing boat at a reasonable scale. Perhaps the time has come what with my shaky hand. Having researched the market I think Vanguard Models offer the most comprehensive kit available. From simple fishing craft up.....

So here we are

Note the quality of the build manual

Judging by the way the build stand went together this is going to slot together like a dream

I'm sure that's a song........:penguin:

Nisha was built in Uphams boatyard in Brixham, Devon. They built a long line of sailing fishing boats inc. the fastest of there time. They went on to build many Fairmile B's & D's in WWII.:hmmm:

Here we go......

First job is to remove the laser cut frames. Piece of cake. Each frame had 2 tags 0.5mm wide which was cut with a scalpel.

I'm sure like me in days of yore you' had a kit that allegedly slotted together, only to find the slots were too tight/slack. Well not here.

The above was achieved in less than an hour inc. provisional beveling six of the frames

Full marks Vanguard Models

Thanks for looking in, stay safe

Steady progress

Bulwarks added

P1120502

Doesn't look a lot but patience is required to fair everything in so that the bulwarks/planks sit fair. So far so good

First plank, the garboard in position

This is coming along very nicely Longshanks but, at the risk of being a party pooper; the boat is in a slightly odd scale at 1/64. Where are you going to get the necessary 1/64 seagulls from? Perhaps one of the denizens of the maritime section of the forum can 3D print some for you? Offers to Longshanks on a postcard C/O Britmodeller.

P1120530

After a chat with sandpaper/sticks

P1120534

P1120535

Only time clamps were used was for the bulwarks. No pins used. CA glue used with edge bending where reqd.

P1120536

P1120537

Not perfect but perhaps good enough for Government work

That is very nice workmanship. No steelers. More or less equal tapering all the way down. Nothing sticking out.

If my second planking is as good as that I will be very pleased with myself.

What kind of heating tool are you using for the edge bending?

 A travel iron

It's almost a pity to cover it with another layer of planking.

The plus being it's good practise for the top layer

I'm just starting the second planking and it's a lot easier. The pear planking is a lot more flexible, thinner and narrower. You will make a beautiful of it, for sure.

Moving along....

First off my plank vice. Simple to make and a boon in holding skinny little plank.

P1120538

From the 5th plank down I needed to edge bend the planks to allow them to sit flush with the formers

This entails a bit of moisture and heat whilst bent around former. Then allowed to cool on former

P1120540

This will give you an idea of the bend and taper

P1120542

Both sides now planked with 1st layer

P1120545

P1120546

P1120549

P1120550

Happy days

Stay safe
