HMS Onslow 1942

Recommended Posts

Gidday All, here is my model of the destroyer HMS Onslow, depicted as best I can as she appeared during the Battle of the Barents Sea on 31st December 1942. This vessel was Captain Sherbrooke's ship escorting the convoy JW-51B to Russia. His squadron consisted of five destroyers, two corvettes and a trawler when the they were attacked in the Barents Sea by the heavy cruiser Hipper (Adm Kummetz) and three destroyers. The intention of Kummetz was to draw off the escorts and drive the convoy into the arms of a second German squadron consisting of the Panzerchiff Lutzow (redesignated a heavy cruiser) and three other destroyers. For over two hours Onslow and a sistership HMS Orwell held Kummetz at bay until Rear Admiral Burnett's cruisers HMShips Sheffield and Jamaica arrived and chased the German ships off. HMS Onslow was badly damaged and Sherbrooke severely wounded in the action, which won him a VC.

At the time of the battle HMS Onslow was armed with four single 4.7-inch guns (two were iced up and couldn't be used), one single 4-inch AA gun, one quad 2lb pompom mount, four single 20mm Oerlikons, one quad 21-inch torpedo tube mounting (no reloads were carried), two depth charge throwers and two depth charge rails (chutes). She was 345 feet (105.2m) long oa, standard displacement was 1640 tons and she was rated at 37 knots.

As with nearly all of my model ships this is in the scale of 1/600. I used an Airfix 'Cossack' hull but heavily modified it, by making it shorter, shallower, reducing the rake of the bow and increasing the deck sheer at the bow. I used the kit's screws and rudder but scratchbuilt replacements for the shafts, struts and anchors.

All decks and structures were scratchbuilt, and nearly everything else too. In fact the only deck fittings not made by me were the Carley floats, searchlight, boats and davits. All guns, torpedo tubes, DC gear, masts, director and funnel were scratchbuilt.

Here she is, HMS Onslow as at the Battle of the Barents Sea.

And finally, the bridge.

As usual, close-up photos are not kind to me, showing all her blemishes.

Excellent build Jeff. The hull revisions you made are quite inspirational, but given I value my fingers and thumbs, more towards attempting a less drastic whiff of my own.

I particularly like that gorgeous blue, and if anyone didnt get to follow the build log I'd highly recommend it to see some ingenious solutions (guiding 'walls') and the scratch-building.

Gidday All, thank you for your interest and comments.

@Bertie Psmith, @Brian Derbyshire, I can't claim credit for it, someone in the Royal Navy came up with it, I just copied it as best I could. 🙂

I find that the disruptive camo schemes slow down a build but they liven up the display cabinet a bit.     Regards, Jeff.

Gidday @Rich75 and thanks. Currently I'm doing HMS Glamorgan for the Falklands GB. It's not a very good kit. After that I'm not sure. I'd like to do an 'R' class battleship sometime, and two carriers, HMS Eagle (WW2) and HMS Glorious. A Hunt class HMS Ledbury is also in the queue somewhere, plus some USN destroyers. I haven't decided yet. Regards, Jeff.

Gidday @Bandsaw Steve, thanks, and that's the plan. I have three other new ships also, plus a couple of misc 1/600 newbies - a Grumman F7F Tigercat and a 2lb octuple pompom AA gun. I'm not sure whether to bring the Tigercat, it's really rather simple. The 8-barreled pompom was 27 pieces I think, although it's not very big.

     Regards, Jeff.
