The Merits of American Style (1/72 Arma Hobby P-51B Mustang)

Recommended Posts

Nice work!     👍  👍  👍

I love placing teeny weeny details and decals in interior locations that will never be seen again by the likes of man. Heck, not even the likes of Lilliputians. Perhaps an errant atom or two will drift its way into the cockpit and read a placard - but then again I'm not so sure that atoms can read.

Cheers,

Bill

This morning I was well enough to make French Toast

Next time your in the UK PC you need to have the French Toast for breakfast at the Wolseley on Piccadilly in London.  My favourite breakfast (with bacon and maple syrup - the taste for maple syrup courtesy of visits to the U.S.) in my favouritist place for breakfast (well it’s a toss up between that and Betty’s in Harrogate tbh).

Have to try that.  Cockpit looks the biz.

Me, too. I just checked and I do have some of that, but I don't remember when I bought it. Hopefully it's still good.

Not to worry, though. Of the two places I can buy hobby paint up here, the shop with the Citadel paint is the closest. I could walk over to it in about 10 minutes.

Those decals look extraordinarily good Edward - as does the rest of those interior sections. Exemplary detailing. Bravo!

High praise from far better modellers.

(a) I'm jealous, and (b) there's like one person to every thousand miles in Canada, what are the odds of that?

After being prised from slumber at 0545 this morning by the bitter fruit of my loins, I endured the normal Easter festivities and ran some errands with the boys so Mrs P could rest, making our near-weekly trip to Ace Hardware to get things to forestall the total destruction of Hedgehog Manor. This week, we got one of those big circular impact pads to absorb the blow of a doorknob, as Winston's wall has an almost perfect replica of the Pingualuit crater from his habit of slamming the door into the wall when his wroth waxes hot. Additionally, we got ant poison, because my children are probably now important gods of plenty in the hymenopteran pantheon, and leave food just about everywhere (particularly infuriating is their habit of taking a sandwich half and setting it down on the table, with the cut edge facing down, which is the sort of thing they'd shoot you for out of hand in the old Red Army). Lastly, we got a telescoping swiffer thingy to dust fan blades, which rapidly developed a second life as a jousting implement, or perhaps, since it was all one-way, a sort of dismounted pigsticker as Winston pursued Grant through the house with it. What fun! At least Mrs P got some rest. And, in exciting news, the incipient arrival of Colossal Mistake #3 has opened her eyes to the fact that we're living a cut-rate version of Lord of the Flies, minus the scenic tropical vistas, in our own home, with no cool Royal Navy floatplane to come and save us at the last moment, What this means in actual terms is that all of the sudden, we're on the same page discipline-wise with the boys, who've entered a new phase of their life, which they'd probably describe as "ham-handed parental fascism" if they were a little older. Tonight, we dug out the jackboots and made them clean up their own mess, and by their complaining, you would think Edward II suffered less in his final moments. But clean they did, by god, and I felt drunk with power. Naturally, it was time to descend into the grotto.

I got the main cockpit subassembly all put together:

Excuse the seat looking awful, I spilled extra thin CA glue down the front while trying to do something clever, which never works. I am quite pleased with the PE belts, which were hand painted in situ by yr, corresp.

So how does it look in place? Click.

So, after a quick dullcoat to seal in the decals and such, I used National Technical Means to secure the tailwheel (gotta put that in before closing up the fuselage, which has caught me on Mustangs in the past), and sprayed it Alclad Aluminium:

Then: IT WAS TIME.

Been dying to use this adjective.....a very Procopious update

Now I'm back at the bench, and the 1/48 tiger moth a glacier that is my current build finally calves into the ocean I think it is a trip to the Arma section of the stash. Nice cockpit detailing, did you establish how to get the flaps modelled up?

Is the burning question...

Other burning Qs abound

Did you clear away that spillage?

Nuln oil? Are there clear, concise instructions?

Why 42?

Does anyone use log tables?

Not a question, a statement

Mustang is becoming, and looking mighty fine in the process Edward thanks for sharing the pain and pleasure amigo.

It really is a pleasure to join you in these journeys, truly, thank you.

Oh one other burning Q, not for you Edward.

for  the rest of us

Will Mrs PC's change of direction stay the course?

Also envious. I live in one of the more crowded islands on this planet and I'd have to walk for about 10 hours...

Looks great Edward. I love the detail in the wheel wells and the cockpit, the stickers are fabulous.

I asked the fellas at Arma directly -- without sanding the flaps a bit, I'm afraid it's not possible out of the box. I'm just going to model them down.

It's basically just an acrylic wash. You run it along a panel line or raised detail with a fine brush to get the outline effect as in the rear wheel bay of my Mustang, or you liberally apply it all over a Warhammer figure to conceal your lack of skill. Not that I would know anything about that.

(n.b. I cannot stand the sound of Bob Dylan's voice, Peter, Paul, and Mary did a better version, but Bob Dylan, for all his myriad faults, has not, unlike Peter Yarrow, interfered with a 14-year-old child.)

She's generally fairly short-tempered when pregnant, as I've often mentioned. This time it just so happens that Winston, and to a lesser extent, Grant, are the recipients of most of her ire. She needs me to open jars. I think I've mentioned that during her first pregnancy she got mad at me and drove off, leaving me at the grocery store. I'm basking in the luxury of being the (comparatively) patient parent for the time being.

To those who may think I an lucky to live so close to a source of Citadel paint, let me remind you that it's not a hobby shop. It's a gamer store that sells a bunch of stuff that I have no idea what it's for. There are some Warhammer kits and a large number of weird looking orc-type figures, but they are of no interest to me.

The other store in town that sells Tamiya paint is at least two miles away, downtown, across the river. It, too, is some kit of gamer type place. It does carry a few scale models, but there's everything from 1/25 cars, 1/350 scale ships and some aircraft in various scales. Last visit there, I saw 3 1/72 kits. Two Airfix jets and one Revell jet. No WW2 at all.

The next closest hobby shop is 300 miles/450 km./a 5 hour drive south, with SFA in between.

Such is life when you live on The Backside of Beyond!

PS  That 'stang is looking great, Edward!

Don't do it! Mrs. P will need that money for new baby clothes and all the other stuff that babies need.

Don't do it Edward, Diapers cost a small fortune and if you're going with formula you’ll need to take a 2nd mortgage out on the house.

I guess its the lesser of the two evils between that & a Zvezda one just now.

Quite aside from the present moral implications of buying Zvezda, their Su-35 is a pretty poor kit, I'm told.

'Twas more this that I was commenting on, though one of their kits in that family was, I thought, decent bang for back. Not sure which one but immaterial just now.

Steve.
