Faraway
Back in my comfort zone of 1/350 after my slightly mad excursion into the realms of 1/700 with Bismarck. I've had a look through the parts and I can actually see some with my unaided eyes, especially the PE. I got this kit from a fellow BMer @Alan P and its been sitting on my shelf since January, but no longer. I'll be 'laying the keel' in the coming days. It came with many 'extras' which should go a way to making it quite a spectacular build, that is if I don't cock it up. I've never built a Aoshima kit before, but the detail does look very good and the molding crisp and flash free. So here are a few photos. Jon Box art. Veteran Models extras. PE extra. One sheet for this ship, one for her sister ship and one is generic. I'll be adding a set of railings for the deck, as these sets only seem to have railings for the superstructure. The hull halves, pen for scale. She's a bit bigger than Bismarck. Finally, a few sprues. Right. I'm off to enjoy the sunshine, building will start in earnest next week. ArnoldAmbrose
Gidday Jon, I think they were very imposing looking ships, with that huge bridge. It should be a good model. Regards, Jeff.

IJNfan
Your luck with getting this kit that way is monumental. It's been sold out everywhere as of the last 2 years over here. Envious. Looking forward to it. Edited March 28, 2022 by IJNfan

Faraway
Right, here we go. I've just spend a happy four hours. First scraping off the detail of the seaplane tracks and turntables, on what I suppose you could call the 'flight deck' ? Then assembling the rails to the tracks and turntables of the first PE parts. And putting them in place. So far so good. I think the ladders fore and aft, port and starboard will be coming off, to be replaced by PE. I'll need to study the 'destructions' a bit more to be sure, they are quite confusing. There are also railings to be applied and then it can all be painted. It looks a bit messy, but when painted, it'll be fine. Jon
S-boat 55
My chair is pulled up, I've been wondering about a japanese escort for Taiho and as Jeff says these were great looking ships, Edited March 28, 2022 by S-boat 55 Sorry Jeff I called you Jess
Faraway
As far as I can determine, this ship didn’t have ‘boot-topping’. So before I carry on painting the hull, can anyone verify this ? Jon
Alan P
Highly unlikely. None of the contemporary photos of the Takaos show anything like boot topping as the demarcation line isn't dark enough...most of the (contemporary) colourised photos back this up.

That was my assumption. Also the IJN weren’t inclined to do much in the way of camouflage either. Just overall grey, of some shade or other. ArnoldAmbrose
Gidday Jon and Alan, that's pretty much what I've found too, but I stress I'm no expert on IJN colours. Regards, Jeff.

Atago would have been Kure Grey for all upright and steel horizontal surfaces. 1

It does make for an easy life, this one shade of grey, EVERYWHERE. Once I’ve painted the ‘lino deck’ then masked the areas, I might as well dip the whole thing in Kure Grey. Faraway
Hull and deck undercoated in black. "Lino" sections of the deck painted as is the red anti-foul on the hull. I also got a bit carried away and made up a wooden base to mount her on, nice bit of planned oak and a couple short lengths of dowel, through which I drilled a hole. Couple of captive nuts in the hull and bingo one base, came out quite well, I thought. Coat of dark stain. I will do a bit of super structure sub-assembly build now and then start painting the KURE grey, which goes on every surface except the 'lino'. Th deck will require a bit of brush work, to pick out all the bits and bobs moulded to it. Jon

Jon Good golly gosh hasn't she got lovely lines, the bow in profile is akin the tip of katanga sword, the truly overall grey is a godsend in simplifying painting for sure, That base looks right nice
steve5
what an easy way for a base , thanks for the tip jon .
Faraway
So, what have I done today ? I've made the five main gun turrets. And yet more PE. Yet again the PE instructions were vague and confused, but I'm coming to understand how they work. Jon

Faraway
Lots of little parts painted grey on the deck which will, hopefully, get attached to the hull tomorrow. Then it'll start to look like a ship. Really could have done with one of those paint brushes @Jamie @ Sovereign Hobbies
