Ukrainan Su-27UB Flanker C, 1/48 GWH

Recommended Posts

Great work on the intakes and wheel bays👍. I´m glad now that I bought the intake and exhaust covers for my project 😆.

Do you have any pics of the tinted windshield on the original Su-27, I have never noticed this before on ukrainian Flankers..?

Looking forward for your next steps.

Thanks Daniel :D

I admit that the yellow tint is mostly noticeable in weathered Flankers and I have not seen them on serviced Ukrainian Flankers, but it is a feature that is very appealing to the eye so I call artistic licence on this for this particular build. :P

The yellow tint is caused by the degradation of the windscreen due to exposure to ultraviolet light.

The Friday update.

Exhausting....

The stinger tip attached.

IMG_6483.JPG

Stuff ready for primer.

IMG_6484.JPG

IMG_6485.JPG

I primed the insides of the wheel bay doors in gray Primer and then painted them red with Akan

IMG_6486.JPG

And the fins were primed in Gray and then polished with a 2000 grit pad.

IMG_6487.JPG

IMG_6488.JPG

While the primer cured I cleaned the exhaust parts and readied them for primer.

IMG_6489.JPG

IMG_6491.JPG

I primed the outer exhaust parts in gloss black. and the exhaust tunnel in gray.

IMG_6492.JPG

Then I painted the exhausts in Airframe aluminium as a base for the weathering.

IMG_6493.JPG

IMG_6494.JPG

Next I painted the inner parts in Tamyia XF-73

IMG_6495.JPG

IMG_6496.JPG

IMG_6497.JPG

And then I finished todays session with clear coating everything so I can start playing with washes tomorrow or so.

Cheers!

Aargh! Multiple part jet exhausts, good luck with them.

I like  the red interiors on the doors, adds a nice splash of colour.

Looking forward to more.

Stay safe.

The Sunday update is a wee bit special..

You see I forgot to make one update and only recently found it in my camera. I made and update on Patreon following this update...so I will make one
big update with the both updates as one.

The exhausting work continues

The insides of the landing bay doors got a thin dark wash to bring out the details

IMG_6499.JPG

THen it was the tedious masking of the exhausts first with small squares...

IMG_6500.JPG

IMG_6501.JPG

The burners got a wash....

IMG_6502.JPG

Followed by City Dark Dust pigments...

IMG_6503.JPG

IMG_6504.JPG

Then soot streaks with black pigment.

IMG_6505.JPG

IMG_6506.JPG

Then further masking on the turkey feathers....

IMG_6507.JPG

IMG_6508.JPG

And painted them in Alclad steel

IMG_6510.JPG

IMG_6511.JPG

Here is a new thing I decided to test on the exhausts.

As you remember I clear coated the exhausts last in my previous post....Now I painted them with Alclad Stainless Steel and I DID NOT seal the color with a clear coat!

That means that when I put down the wash it partly disolved the Stainless steel coat.

IMG_6512(1).JPG

IMG_6513(1).JPG

You see how the Steel is rubbed off at places and it gives the exhaust the splotchy uneven shines from heat staining. NOW however I seal it with a clear coat.

IMG_6514(1).JPG

Whilte the clear coat dried I painted the outside of the wheelbay doors in MRP Ukrainian Air Force Light Blue...note no preshade on them! The Digi cammo is rather new and I have yet to see a dirty and weathered jet...as a matter of fact it seems theat the Ukrainians keep their jets in better condition than the russians.

An entirely unprofessional observation and I have nothing really to substansiate it on than the pictures I've found online.

IMG_6515(1).JPG

IMG_6516(1).JPG

IMG_6517(1).JPG

Back to the exhausts...

I used Sakura pens with blue and orange to create heatstain discoloration.

IMG_6518(1).JPG

I simply paint a spot...

IMG_6519(1).JPG

And smear it out with my finger...sorry for the bad picture but you get the geist of it.

IMG_6520(1).JPG

Nice effects but they need more shine to blend them in

IMG_6521(1).JPG

I use SnJ's aluminium powder with a cotton swab. I dip one end in the powder and then dot around the exhaust and smear it out or dab it with the other end of the cotton swab.

IMG_6522(1).JPG

LIke so, this also helped with the cracking of the first clear coat layer I noticed here and there.

IMG_6523(1).JPG

At this stage I glued the exhausts together, really nice fit but you do have to align them for a while to get that perfect fit. I can tell you straight out that this model does not need after market exhausts. The details are absurdly fine on these!

IMG_6524.JPG

IMG_6525.JPG

IMG_6526.JPG

IMG_6527.JPG

Now for the last stage....black pigment to give them that sooty feel and uneven finish.

IMG_6528.JPG

IMG_6529.JPG

IMG_6530.JPG

Cheers!

The Friday update is ready to rollout!

Canopy woes

Finally my paint masks arrived for the canopy....BUT,  yeah you'll see soon.

First I have to point out the special feature of this model.... it comes with two different canopies. One clear part molded in one piece and one with a frame in ordinary gray plastic and the clear parts separate.

IMG_6531.JPG

IMG_6532.JPG

I start wondering if there is some benefit of this.

The clear parts are molded the same way as the one piece canopy, that is with a middle seam...so you don't get rid of that.

IMG_6533.JPG

The pieces fit quite well....

IMG_6534.JPG

BUT when looking closely at the frame where the clear and gray plastic meet it is quite rough. As a modeller I don't really like this but I asume it makes painting the frame easier without masking...but I prefer the old fashion masking method.

IMG_6535.JPG

IMG_6536.JPG

IMG_6537.JPG

IMG_6538.JPG

The fit of the windshield is so so...I think I will have to do something about that.

IMG_6539.JPG

At least I can use the extra canopy as a paint mask when painting the fuselage.

IMG_6540.JPG

Talking about masking, time to mask the inside  of the canopy and wind shield.

No problems with the windshield...

IMG_6541.JPG

When I started masking the canopy I noticed something odd though.....that can't be right.

IMG_6542.JPG

Well of course I had got the canopy masks for the single seater! SIGH!

IMG_6543.JPG

So the rear part I had to mask myself.... I used the corners from the mask set...because I'm lazy.

IMG_6544.JPG

Added thin strips of kabuki tape....

IMG_6545.JPG

And masked...

IMG_6546.JPG

First a black primer...

IMG_6548.JPG

Then I painted the cockpit colour.

IMG_6549.JPG

And off with the mask....

IMG_6550.JPG

IMG_6551.JPG

I will continue on the canopy in the next update.

Cheers!

I don’t like canopy masking so having a separate frame looks attractive, but only if it fits properly.

And here is the Sunday update

Yet more masking.

And time for the outside of the canopy.

First I masked for the frame sealant....

No probs on the windshield...

IMG_6552.JPG

IMG_6553.JPG

And the forward part of the canopy went well...

IMG_6554.JPG

Then it was time for the rear part where I don't have any masks :P well I made my own but still annoying that I ordered the wrong one!

IMG_6555.JPG

The sealant is pink in this case...there are black sealant too on sukhoijs but aparently this had pink acording to refs.

IMG_6556.JPG

and then I masked off the pink...

IMG_6557.JPG

On with gray primer.

IMG_6558.JPG

Then on with some Citadel Nulnoil as a wash.

IMG_6561.JPG

IMG_6562.JPG

IMG_6563.JPG

IMG_6564.JPG

That's all for today :D

Cheers!

It's coming along nicely, I must admit I have been too busy to get any further along with my one.

That front canopy fit is a bit of a worry, did you manage to get it sorted? If you are building Blue 71 then I can confirm it has the pink sealant but looks like it has mostly been painted over with the camouflage colours and only shows through where the camo paint has chipped or pealed off.

Very impressive build and great progress so far. After seeing this build I wanted to go back and complete my all pending Flanker builds. But I  have to finish first ongoing Blackbird/Oxcart projects.

I follow your build with great interest.

Hi Aigore

I think you reversed the gluding turn of windshield and nose cone.

Actually windshield should be glued first, then glue the nose cone.

Because there is a angeled step between windshield and nose cone, if you glue nose cone ahead, you cannot insert windshield smoothly.

So just follow the instruction sheet and do not disorder it. ;)

I had no problem with gluing those 2 parts during my built.

(Yes I know some people prefer to glue clear parts AFTER painting them, but I do no recommend that in case there is gap between clear parts and fuelage.)

Great progress you are making.  And thanks for taking tons of photos.  I know it takes some effort to take them as you build.  Kudos for that.

Keep up the good work, and it is coming out very nicely!

Friday is upon us....the Icehockey World Cup is also upon us and me being me means I will be watching lots of hockey which might impact negatively on me builing stuff :P
Go Team Finland!!!!

but I have an update for you.

Closing the pit...

Hmmm...I need to make the nose cone fit better...thst means a weee bit of putty.

IMG_6607.JPG

Then a bit of drybrushing.

IMG_6608.JPG

IMG_6609.JPG

Next it was time for the HUD, you get to choose between a PE and a plastic HUD the PE always loos best but is a tad tricky.

IMG_6610.JPG

After a bit of wrestling and having small pieces of acetate fly off in to the infinity I finally had  the glass put in and the HUD painted. Interesting that there is a piece of acetate covering the lens.

IMG_6611.JPG

To make life easier I cut of the tab in the windshield

IMG_6612.JPG

And glued it into place.

IMG_6613.JPG

A nasty seam to the nose cone 😕

IMG_6614.JPG

And the canopy got put in place temporarely for the paintjob.

IMG_6615.JPG

Painting draws closer....

Cheers!

Oh, Sunday...who knew! Here is an update.

Prime time!

Time to take care of the less  fun aspect of modelling, sanding and rescribing!

Luckily there isn't much putty to sand away but still...

Sanded around the nose to make it fit better, really only the  place it needs help.

IMG_6616.JPG

A wee bit on the LERX as well.

IMG_6617.JPG

With the sanding done it's time to rescribe... I use my usual tools.

IMG_6619.JPG

The trickiest place was the slanted nose cone seam but with some Dymo tape I had it done.

IMG_6620.JPG

Had to add the little triangle thingy on infront of the nose cone....sanded it off.

IMG_6621.JPG

Well now I'm happy as I can be without seeing for sure...

IMG_6623.JPG

Time to mask all ..cavities.

IMG_6624.JPG

I'm impressed by the fit of the landing bay doors....they just pop into place and stay there.

Done with the masking and ready for primer!

IMG_6625.JPG

IMG_6626.JPG

IMG_6627.JPG

Well, I can't find any glaring mistakes so far... perhaps I will find something after polishing the primer :D

IMG_6628.JPG

IMG_6629.JPG

IMG_6630.JPG

IMG_6631.JPG

Cheers!

🇺🇦 Flankers look great!!

And the GWH one seems to be the best of the bunch!

Thanks!

It is....a wee bit pricey but oh so good!

But I have to say that a Hobby Boss Flanker is a bargain...sure they have issues but it looks like a Flanker for quite reasonable money.

Ah Friday again...time for an update.

Paint!!!

Yes we have paint!

I painted the underside with MRPs Ukraine light blue

IMG_6632.JPG

OH almost forgot the wingtip launchers.

IMG_6633.JPG

I have some slight bettering to do later.

IMG_6634.JPG

Next I masked for the upper colours.....well the base colour at least

IMG_6635.JPG

IMG_6636.JPG

Then I painted all with lovely Ukrainian blue from MRP.

IMG_6637.JPG

IMG_6638.JPG

IMG_6639.JPG

NOw I'll let it cure for a bit before I start on the digital scheme.

Oh You may have noticed that I haven't done any preshading...well to tell the truth, the Ukraine Flanker are so freshly painted and well kept that I can't bring myself to do a weathered and scruffy one.

Cheers!

The Sunday update is here.

Bluer...

Time to start on the cammo....

I had the blue down...

IMG_6668.JPG

Now it´s time to mask for the dark blue.

IMG_6669.JPG

Oh boy...that wasn't fun...I must say that I prefer kabuki masks...vnyl masks don't really want to lie down or conform so we shall see how this turns out.

IMG_6670.JPG

Paint!

IMG_6672.JPG

And unmasking....

I have some overspray but that's no worries and there are spots where the mask lifted...oh well ...but on the whole, not too shabby!

IMG_6671.JPG

IMG_6673.JPG

IMG_6674.JPG

I will do the vertical stabs separately ...right now I'm beat :P

Cheers!
