Nice project and quite a great start. I realy like the digital camo of the Ukrainian Sukhois an dgot all the stuff to build one in 1/72 in my stash, maybe your project brings me some motivation to start mine too.

The Friday update is here!

The Wheel-welling Continues

Moving on to the outer parts of the main wheel wells.

I begin by glueing in the roof of the airintakes, they have an itty bitty wheel well part. The fit was pleasently perfect.

IMG_6397.JPG

IMG_6398.JPG

Next I cleaned the small stuff  and detail painted them

IMG_6399.JPG

With the small stuff painted I started glueing them into place, first to the engine nacelles.

IMG_6400.JPG

And into the fuselage part too.

IMG_6401.JPG

IMG_6402.JPG

Then a gloss coat and and a light wash.

IMG_6403.JPG

IMG_6404.JPG

IMG_6405.JPG

IMG_6406.JPG

I finished off by wiping off excessive wash and flat coated.

IMG_6407.JPG

IMG_6408.JPG

IMG_6409.JPG

IMG_6410.JPG

I finnished today session with dry fitteing the intake and engine  nacelle....looks delightfully busy!

IMG_6411.JPG

Cheers!

The Sunday update is here.

The intakes....

Oh...became a wee bit bigger update than anticipated...I guess I was in the hot zone!

First off I glued in the airbrake shut...afterwards I discovered there should have been an insert in the air brake but it fit anyways :P

IMG_6412.JPG

Then I glued the air ducts...

IMG_6413.JPG

I'm going for a open intake this time and thus the gills are shut.

IMG_6414.JPG

And they fit gloriously...

IMG_6416.JPG

The Airducts needed a bit of putty on the inside though.

IMG_6417.JPG

Painted the fan front in Alclad Stainless Steel and put down a little wash and glued them together.

IMG_6418.JPG

IMG_6419.JPG

I painted the big door in the intake with Alclad Stainless Steel as well.

IMG_6421.JPG

Now it was timne to sand the air ducts...

IMG_6422.JPG

And primed with Alclad Gray Primer

IMG_6423.JPG

The colour on the inside of the air intakes and airducts are a wee bit tricky. Mostley they are aluminium treated with a yellowish-tanish varnish. I tried to make a mix that seemed plausible with one part vietnam tan, one part Light Stone and one part light gray.

IMG_6424.JPG

IMG_6425.JPG

Put the fanfronts in place...I doubt they'll ever see the light of day in there :P

IMG_6426.JPG

Now for some masking, I thought it would be easier to paint the intakes before assembly...since I didn't do that on my last Flanker and paid the price.

IMG_6427.JPG

Aparently the Ukraine AF had their own colors...luckily I had them

IMG_6428.JPG

First some gray primer and a bit of my usual squiggles with Tamyia XF-63.

IMG_6429.JPG

And put down the light blue.

IMG_6430.JPG

Then more masking and some gloss black on the lower intake lip...

IMG_6431.JPG

Followed by Alclad Polished Aluminium

IMG_6432.JPG

Looking good

IMG_6433.JPG

Glued in the intake doors.

IMG_6434.JPG

Since a part of the outside of the air ducts will show through the wheel bays I painted them in the pale primer colour I mixed earlier.

IMG_6435.JPG

And glued in the airduct into the nacelle.

IMG_6436.JPG

Somewhere in there the fan fronts should be :P

IMG_6437.JPG

Primed and painted the area around the intakes on the lowert fuselage....a bit easier to do now rather than later.

IMG_6438.JPG

Then I added a thin gray wash on the intakes trying to bring out those details.

IMG_6439.JPG

IMG_6440.JPG

Then it was time to glue the intake nacelles into the lower fuselage.

IMG_6441.JPG

A decent fit, a little gap att the forward section but that's all.

IMG_6442.JPG

And there the both intakes are in place and this session is done.

Next time there will be fuselage closing :D

IMG_6443.JPG

IMG_6444.JPG

Cheers!

You are speeding along nicely. I took a lot of care painting and detailing some resin aftermarket fans and making sure the seams were all filled in on the trunking on my Su-35 only for it all to completely disappear once assembled. I haven't been as fussy this time and have just thrown the parts together lol. It's definitely worth pre painting the insides of the actual air intakes though.

Have you found photographic evidence for your Ukrainian UB having the tan coloured intakes? I did a bit of a hunt on the internet for photos of Blue 71 and it looks like the intakes are the blue grey (almost RLM02) colour from what I could see, admittedly finding well lit photos of the intakes is virtually impossible. I wonder if the intakes were either painted that colour from new or repainted when these aircraft were upgraded.

THanks Duncan :D

Yeah, it's been hard to come by any good refs really...I guess I fell back on Yufei's build and general pictures instead of specific refs :P

However I feel I can focus my energy on things that actually will be seen :P

Friday is upon us and here is the update!

The Dip

OK where were we?

Right I glued the intakes to the lower fuselage half.

in fact there was a small gap along the inside so I puttied it up real quick with acrylic putty and pulled off the excess with cotton swab.

IMG_6445.JPG

IMG_6446.JPG

Then I glued in these small things into the upper fuselage..suppose they have something to do with the horizontal stabs.

IMG_6447.JPG

Then it was time to close the fuselage. The fit is good but I have to pull the fuselage to shape and fix them in position with clamps and tape.

IMG_6448.JPG

IMG_6449.JPG

IMG_6451.JPG

Then the stinger, important to use the right part here since it differes between Russian and Ukrainian flankers.

IMG_6453.JPG

After that I glued the vertical stabs together.

IMG_6452.JPG

Right, next for the windshield.

There is a seamline across the center, I first scraped off the line with a knife.

IMG_6455.JPG

Then I sanded with 1000 grit pads...

IMG_6456.JPG

2000 grit....

IMG_6457.JPG

And 4000 grit.

IMG_6458.JPG

Then wet polishing with a 6000 cloth......duh put the wrong one in the picture :P

IMG_6459.JPG

8000....

IMG_6460.JPG

And finally 12000 grit.

IMG_6461.JPG

Next Tamiya Polishing Compound....

IMG_6462.JPG

And a dip in Future....

IMG_6463.JPG

Now I want the wind shield tinted.

I mix 1 part Tamiya Clear Yellow and one part Tamiya Smoke....

IMG_6464.JPG

Then I carefully shoot dry coats until I'm happy with the tint.

IMG_6465.JPG

Now a bit of polishing with Tamyia compund to bring back the shine...

IMG_6467.JPG

And a final dip i n future to get that crystal clearity :D Oh I did the canopy too but no tinting.

IMG_6468.JPG

Cheers!

Watching your build has prompted me to dig out my Academy Su-27B, which I bought about 20 years ago.

While the GWH kit is obviously miles ahead of the Academy version, I also have quite a few aftermarket sets including an original KMC cockpit and the Aires wheel wells and exhaust nozzles. I might do some research into converting it to a Ukrainian Flanker C.

Keep up the good work.

And it's Sunday and time for another update.

A bit of this and that.

Mostly just adding stuff, this is more like assembly than building to be frank.

The fuselage seam isn't Tamiya perfect but no real issue.

IMG_6469.JPG

IMG_6470.JPG

Added some protruding bumps to the nacelles.

IMG_6471.JPG

Cleaned the seam on the vertical stabs a bit...just scraping lightly.

IMG_6472.JPG

Put a bit of ballast in the nosecone.

IMG_6473.JPG

Readied these small tubes to go into the wheel wells.

IMG_6474.JPG

IMG_6475.JPG

IMG_6476.JPG

Added the HUD projector lens.

IMG_6477.JPG

Added the outer parts of the wheelwells...they fit with a satisfying POP.

IMG_6478.JPG

Put the leading edge slats together and glued them into place.

IMG_6479.JPG

IMG_6480.JPG

And the flaps..

IMG_6481.JPG

And lastly I put the nosecone into place...  next I will do some minute filling and sanding to get those perfect seams.

IMG_6482.JPG

That's all for today folks :D

Cheers!

That’s an interesting joint line for the nose cone, hope the filling and sanding works well.

The detail in the main wheel wells is amazing, certainly as good as the Aires wheel well set.

Looking forward to more.
