Sea Harrier XZ457, 14, 899 NAS, HMS Hermes.

 

Hasegawa 1/72, scratch built cockpit and nose gear bay, Airfix seat and sidewinders from the spares box, brass pitot by Master, painted with Hataka acrylics.  The three kill markings under the cockpit were in reality not painted  until Hermes was on her return voyage post conflict and would probably not have have been on the aircraft fully armed, so I’ve used a bit of artistic licence including them.  I brushed on the clear coat aiming for a slightly streaky, patchy appearance.

 

 

 

 

 

And yes, the Coastal Kits base is not HMS Hermes, but it is a British carrier deck!

I suppose I should start this with a warning - for those who like fairly accurate builds - look away now! This is a PM kit I bought about 10 years ago as it said it could be made up as either an Argentinian "Dagger"(ex Israeli Nesher), or one of their Mirage IIIEA. Both of these planes had totally different noses but the only one provided is sort of half way between the two so I replaced it with one from spares box which is not perfect but looks closer - that in fact is the story of the whole build as besides making a cockpit interior, replacing the duff ejection seat, blanking off the intakes, adding a more suitable jet pipe and providing the missing plate aerials on the tail, I had to replace or modify everything that went under the wings. The drop tanks provided were perfectly good narrow supersonic ones, but these did not provide enough range for anything other than combat patrols over Argentinian home bases so were only suitable for the IIIEA - I added 3 converted Phantom tanks modified to look like the Argentinian 1300 Litre ones. The AA missiles were probably Sidewinders and had to be shortened to look like Shafrir II, and the bombs looked nothing like the Spanish 500lb ones used according to my sources so I modified some from my spares box. I also fitted the extra pylons that the Nesher/Dagger had. Finally the decs were rubbish so I printed my own for II^o Escuadrón Aeromóvil “La Marinette” of the Sixth Air Brigade based at Rio Grande.

It was a challenge that I quite enjoyed but I admit I was glad to get it finished.

Finished just in time for the beginning of the Black Buck 40th anniversary. On 30 April 1982, XM607 was the first RAF Vulcan to successfully strike the Falkand Islands, damaging the runway at Port Stanley with a single 1000lb bomb from its payload of 21. My model represents XM597 as she would have appeared on the night of Black Buck 6, although that didn't take place until 3 June. Black Buck 6 targeted Argentine radar installations on the Falkands using US supplied AGM-45 Shrike Missiles and on the return journey, XM597 had to divert to Brazil due to a broken refuelling probe. 

Today you can see XM597 at the National Museum of Flight in Scotland, and although I have not been myself I hope I will have the opportunity when I go gliding Scotland in June.

The kit is the Cyberhobby 1/200 scale Vulcan B2, rivet counted to my usual standard, although there are a couple of small things I realised I missed...... I'm sure no one else will ever notice!

Black Buck 1:  Vulcan XM598

 

Almost exactly 40 years ago, at midnight on 30th April 1982, Vulcan XM598 took off from Wideawake Airfield on Ascension Island as the lead bomber in the first Black Buck mission.  It wasn't the first aircraft to take off that night (as it had been preceded by several Victor tankers), but it was the first Vulcan.

 

The aircraft currently resides at the RAF Cosford museum.

 

My model of XM598 is a virtually OOB build of the CyberHobby 1/200 scale kit (the build thread is here).

This is the old Airfix 1/76 (or maybe 1/72) FV 107 Scimitar, one of the CVR(T) family of light armoured vehicles that included the Scorpion, Samson etc. Two groups of these, a mix of all three types, were involved in the conflict, the Samson recovery/engineering vehicles providing support for the Scorpion with its 76mm gun and the Scimitar with a 30mm Rarden. I have based my build on an illustration in the Osprey book on the Scorpion family, and it is meant to be 2-3 Charlie, from 3 Troop, B Squadron, The Blues and Royals. This particular machine is said to have been the first one ashore at San Carlos, and the first to engage the Argentinian defences around Port Stanley immediately before the Argentinians surrendered. It probably has a number of inaccuracies as the equipment fit almost certainly changed over the years, but it is as close as I can get in this scale.

I bought the Airfix kit of the Westland Scout helicopter when it first came out and I may have it around still somewhere, but it was a bit damaged so a few years back I bought a replacement. I had thought I could pretty much build it OOB for this GB, with just a change to the paint and markings, but research showed that by the 1980's it had undergone quite a few changes so I indulged in some AM resin from Air Graphics. The main set provided a replacement engine, the small wheels fitted to the skids to make ground handling easier, the new wide bladed tail rotor and a roof sight for the AS-11 missiles. I also bought a pair of "bulged" doors to replace the old kit ones which just had an optional set of small bulges at the bottom to provide enough width for it to carry one or maybe two stretchers when carrying out "Casevac" missions.

And here is my model.

Some sources show the roof tinted blue, some black, and others say blackish blue, but I went with Tamiya clear blue, which may be a bit too light. There is some uncertainty about how many Scouts were in the Falklands - certainly 9 and perhaps 12 but as both the Scout and Gazelle were known as "A.H.1" there may be some confusion. Certainly 3 CBAS (Commando Brigade Air Support) were first to arrive with 6, and they were followed by 656 Squadron AAC who took 3 out on MV Europic Ferry and may have had another 3. This is XT637/F, one of the 3 originals from 656.

 

It was a fairly straightforward build though the bulged windows caused a few problems with the geometry of the rear cabin and some of the original kit parts such as the "undercarriage" were very thin and fragile, but I got there in the end.

 

A few swear words were spoken at times during the construction, but all in all I enjoyed it.

With all the Harriers on board it is time for a little balance...Modelsvit Mirage III.  Nice kit, if a bit persnickety with teeny tiny bits of PE (that I did not always use).  You need a really good razor saw to get some of the thinner parts off without any remaining sprue.  I didn't have one.  Excellent detail.  I am really happy this is finished  and on the shelf and in the gallery.

RAF Harrier GR.3 - XZ133/10, No. 1(F) Squadron.

Flown from RAF Wittering to RAF St Mawgan on 28 May 1982 and then to Ascension Island on 29 May.

Operation ‘Bowsprit’, 1 June. Flown directly from Ascension to HMS Hermes in the Total Exclusion Zone by Flt Lt Murdo MacLeod along with XV778/16 flown by Flt Lt Mike Beech. Flight lasted 8 hours 20 minutes and was supported by four Victor tankers.

XZ133/10 flew numerous sorties in support of ground forces armed with 2-inch rocket pods, 1,000lb retard bombs, BL755 Cluster Bombs, LGBs and AIM-9Ls for CAP Ops.

 

Damaged on 9 June when a 30mm AAA shell exploded directly above XZ133/10’s fuselage

causing shrapnel damage to the upper surfaces of the fuselage and wings, repaired with aluminium (BDR) tape.

 

XZ133 is now preserved at the IWM Duxford.

 

Kit - Airfix H.S. Harrier GR.3 built mostly OOB.

Additions - Eduard AIM-9L missiles and scratch built 'Blue Eric' ECM on stbd gun pod.

Paint - Xtracolor dark sea grey, dark green, Alclad 2 metallics, Winsor & Newton matt acrylic varnish.

Here's my entry into the Harrier Falklands GB...

 

Airfix 1/72 FRS.1 kit, recent reboxing, though seems they omitted a few instructions (so check the old ones on Scalemates, etc. for info on the smaller pieces).

Quick OOB build other than some canopy masks, build thread here, painted with some Mr Color 333 'Extra Dark Sea Grey' and a bit of Flory wash.

My Italeri 1/48 Wessex HU5 was finished in June, just in time for the anniversary of the event it commemorates.  Built with the Eduard Exterior Detail PE Set, otherwise a bit of scratch build detail, mostly in the cabin.

Here is my entry into the GB. Westland Wessex HAS Mk3' Humphrey, served in the campaign with distinction aboard HMS Antrim.

The kit is Italeri 1/48th scale, lots of detail was either added or corrected. Paint is a mix 50/50 of Humbrol and Xtracolour RAF Blue Grey. A coat of Future was applied before the decals. The final coat was Vallejo Acrylic Satin Varnish and Rowney Acrylic Gloss Medium.
