John I know exactly what you mean, I've now got a "strange" unambiguous feeling to my recently built Russian Spitfire, normally I have a certain amount of pride for my models, I certainly did when I'd finished it, but now its almost as if I'm trying to forget that I'd built it. I can't explain it properly, its just a feeling of betrayal to Ukrainians?, silly really as I don't know any and have "no ties" to the country but I feel that somehow I've been disloyal to them? best rgds John(shortCummins) 4 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

shortCummins Posted May 21, 2022 Author Share Posted May 21, 2022 I decided not to follow the steps in the manual, Airfix would have you attach the radiator before the landing gear, I think it makes more sense to attach the landing gear first? Wheels added… …and up on her feet. Airfix have done a really good job with the weighted wheels. The radiator sub-assembly was glued to the underside… …the rear flap for the radiator and intake(s)… I think that Airfix has missed a trick with the intake for the radiator as they joined it to the sprue using the “top front”, which will be visible, if they’d used the bottom rear then I wouldn’t have had to “fix” this… The joint was sanded and then given a coat of MRP black… …followed by Xtreme metal AK478 white aluminium… …and finally bolted on. shortCummins Posted May 21, 2022 Author Share Posted May 21, 2022 Airfix suggest painting the wing tip identification lights “glass” red and green however I thought that I’d drill a hole in each and fill the hole with Tamiya X-25 clear green or X-27 clear red. The base of the gun-sight was brush painted with vallejo black. Glazing fitted. Antenna mast nailed in place. Pitot and stirrup Gun camera? rob Lyttle Posted May 25, 2022 Share Posted May 25, 2022 Sorry I'm a little late for the final flourish, but wow, that's a great looking Hurricane. The whole style of the modelling process, or whatever the word is I'm looking for, is brilliant. Really shows off the subject, and the quality of a good kit. Not to mention your ability to render the finished article faultlessly. I think you have made the "correct" choice on the spinner, although either can be right. I used to know the story on this (I nearly said "whole story"..... I don't think so 😅) but a lot of it has gone. The pointy one which is a neat fit on the front of the fuselage was the original Hurricane design item and it went with the original metal prop installation. Moving to the Rotol resin/fibre bladed prop caused an issue and a bigger spinner was required. So a Spitfire Rotol spinner was used. Rounded and not such a good fit on the nose ie a little too big, but it did the job. I think eventually a tidier fitting item came on line for the Hurricane. As you are not doing a specific airframe in time, you can choose what you like. The original fit seems to be a good option. Either way the finished artefact is a thing of beauty 😍😎. And the Hurricane is the perfect subject for this treatment with the various covering materials used. I can visualise having a go at this style one day.
