M-12 155mm Gun Motor Carriage "The bridge"

Recommended Posts

Hello folks!

As I read, the topic of 3D printing seems to have enough potential for discussion 😄

Basically and in my opinion I would like to say that in model making the way is always the goal and who decides why for which one does not have to mean good or bad.
3D printing has arrived in model making and many have been using bought accessories for a longer time.
It is a different matter to design or print parts yourself.
I totally agree with Graham and Darryl on this, as all the work takes place before printing.
My decision to use the printer instead of plastic card was not difficult because of my possibilities.
Since I do nothing but design components every day at work, I have the necessary software and experience 🤓
This also made the decision to buy the printer easier for me, as I was able to exempt it from taxes as a business expense 😎
To be honest, under other circumstances I would not have made the investment (1.600€) and would have used the good old plastic card.
You can't stop new technologies, whether you use them or not is up to you.
I find complete models from the printer boring (you can already buy them for a lot of money), for me it's the mix of old school and new that makes the appeal.
One of the advantages of the printer is that many identically needed parts are no problem.
The 8 teeth including the screws would otherwise have cost me a lot of effort.
And as far as saving time is concerned, it always depends on the complexity of the part.
The spade cost me several hours of research (because I didn't have the dimensions and other details).
The 10-hour construction involved almost over 50 individual steps and in the end only the third attempt was a success.

Price-wise (concerning the resin) it was rather a minus deal, but honestly: who cares about that? 😁

MD

on the left side you can see some of the steps like extrusion, drilling, bevelling etc. which were necessary to model the spade

, Betamax is the future, just a handy tip!

I was but a young lad , but my old lady backed betamax too, mainly because our rental  telly was supplied by a toshiba dealer and they did betamax, it was a bit sad in the video shop  mind compared to the vhs section,

but I'm  up for one of these resin printers, it's just the learning an old dog new tricks bit, I've  been looking at cad vids on YouTube  lately,  but  I'll probably die before i get this good though ,

Stll i embrace progress 👍

Total modelling , keep it up

Hello all 🥳

First of all, thank you for your comments - they are always very welcome!

Ok, after my wife's insistence that I spend a lot of time on our new lawn in the garden, I'm back at the workbench 😅
The detail work on the M12 is going well and today I want to show you the progress.
In the course of the construction, I have discovered more and more inconsistencies with the original through research and am trying to correct them.
Apart from the superstructure, I am currently working on the massive gun.
The fact that it is a relic of WW1 makes it even more interesting.
I think I will be busy with PE and accessories all next week, then hopefully the painting can start.

Until then have fun!
MD

spacer.png

the rear superstructure was partially rebuilt

spacer.png

Welded seams made of stretched plastic

spacer.png

missing screws and rivets have been added

spacer.png

spacer.png

with a little wire more details

spacer.png

i had doubts about the grenades from the kit 🤔

spacer.png

spacer.png

so research was done 🧐

spacer.png

these beans taste better 😁

spacer.png

spacer.png

i have taken this information as a template

spacer.png

not 100% but better than before

spacer.png

spacer.png

The gun had an enormous recoil 💪

Therefore, a hole had to be dug behind it ☝️

fat thing in the mud 😅

I especially like the filler cap mod which I will try ...

I noticed this as well, nicely done. It is one of those little details which will help add that little bit of extra to any build.

cheers, Graham

Gentlemen!

I'm trying to post more often now - exchanging ideas is actually the whole point of the GB 😁

At the weekend I rebuilt the height adjustment of the gun and added details.
Today I will continue with the rear mudguards.

There I will deviate from the kit...

MD

spacer.png

spacer.png

The gun cradle on the model has gaps that need to be filled in

spacer.png

The mechanism for the height adjustment is missing here, which would probably be seen later on🧐

spacer.png

The template...

spacer.png

To make small rings or sleeves, simply drill out a round plastic rod or tube,

then insert the drill the other way round and carefully cut in with the knife while turning the drill.

spacer.png

The beautiful round ring is ready, without having pressed it flat or oval 😁

spacer.png

I don't get a beauty award for it...

spacer.png

...but much better than before😉

spacer.png

These mudguards belong on a vintage car, but not on a 155mm monster 😯

Tuning is the order of the day 😁

Superb work as ever MD, the attention to detail is exemplary. The mark of a skilled craftsman, you make it look easy!

Thanks for your insight into 3d printing.  The more I learn about this the more interesting it gets, so many applications for both hard and soft surfaces, depending upon the program obviously.

Great work

Dang if that doesn't look like a Naval gun mount ?

Utterly, utterly beautifully detailed modelling. Your attention to even the smallest detail is very impressive! Thank you for the demonstration of how to cut the rings from tube plastic too. Very helpful!

Kind regards,

Stix

Yes, agree with you!
Also reminds me of the base of a naval gun.
Thick cast iron makes the model even more interesting 😉

Gentlemen!

As announced a few news from the M12.
I slowly see light at the end of the tunnel...

Cheers!

spacer.png

old school: the rear fenders were shortened and ground thinner at the visible outer edges

spacer.png

i love field improvisations...

spacer.png

here the mechanics have put in a lot of effort 😁

spacer.png

from a template...

spacer.png

...the packing crate incl. mounting bracket was rebuilt

spacer.png

for further details the collected references are searched again 🧐

spacer.png

The hatch needs locks and a new padding.

I only had some from a german tank, but better than nothing....

spacer.png

The cast-on padding from the kit was too thin.

To achieve a realistic effect, simply sand everything down and rebuild the padding from plastic card. Round off the edges and sand the surface a bit.

Leather or fabric surfaces are always uneven.

spacer.png

Finally a railing for additional cargo 😁

Hello Folks!

The build is progressing slowly-my plan to start painting this week is done 😴

As so often, little things stop me and this time it's the transport support of the gun.
Being a highly visible part, I couldn't leave it like that, so I held my breath and went after the enemy.
Today I will add details to the rear, so get to the workbench and go!

MD

spacer.png

the kit parts 🤢

spacer.png

spacer.png

first a little surgery😷

spacer.png

rebuild the shape

spacer.png

done

spacer.png

actually, nothing is movable in my models-but pride and ambition had the right of way here 😁

spacer.png

the result after 5 hours of work 😅

spacer.png

the clamping screw comes later

spacer.png

oh no-the ammunition dump needs work too 😮

spacer.png

PE strips and a DIY bending device

spacer.png

left-right-left-right ...

spacer.png

done

spacer.png

shorten and bend the ends...

spacer.png

yeah 😎

spacer.png

the lamp guards are also scrap and much too thick

spacer.png

spacer.png

the parts from the Eduard PE set are also not so great

spacer.png

I had better ones from an ET PE set, but they had to be soldered

spacer.png

better

spacer.png

add a few more weld seams

spacer.png

here the screws were missing, i only had rivets at hand

spacer.png

the casting markings according to template

spacer.png

great but very small stuff 👍

spacer.png

not 100%, but for my purposes it is enough 🤓
