Do you have a photo reference showing these? Thank you! The light you mention is actually on the underside, not on top. I, also, used UV cured acrylic for that light, afterwards colored with transparent red paint. I don’t recall any other such items on the SR-71 — I’ll check to confirm and also see if I can find a photo of the actual item. 1
John Laidlaw Posted September 20, 2022 Posted September 20, 2022 Crikey, there are some superb airbrushing skills on display here! 1

Thanks Bill, a bit more googling seems to suggest the red collision avoidance lights were top and bottom but also retractable. As I'm modelling it in flight, I might leave them off. In which case I think it's finished! Photos to follow tomorrow 👍 2
SaminCam Posted September 21, 2022 Author Posted September 21, 2022 Evening all! As promised I finally got this one over the line and took some snaps: Now I say it's finished, but I've still got to do something about the stand so there'll probably be one more WIP post to show this, once I come up with a plan! I'm really pleased with how she's turned out. For a relatively straight forward kit (not many parts!) it's taken a long time to complete: the sanding, filling and rescribing took ages but were strangely cathartic and the hour or two a week I've been snatching at the bench, doing some model and listening to the radio, have been greatly appreciated over a tough couple of months. Talking of appreciation, thanks to everyone for their encouragement, help and patience with this one, I hope you've enjoyed the ride! I'll get an RFI post up once it's got a proper stand to sit on. Next up I'm definitely doing something much smaller, with camouflage (not black!) and a propeller! I've made a bit of a start on a cockpit and a new WIP will be up and running soon. Cheers, Sam 12
billn53 Posted September 22, 2022 Posted September 22, 2022 Now that’s a pretty Blackbird. But, is the Star & Bars insignia on the left wing upside-down? 1
SaminCam Posted September 22, 2022 Author Posted September 22, 2022 Thanks gents! 7 hours ago, billn53 said: Now that’s a pretty Blackbird. But, is the Star & Bars insignia on the left wing upside-down? I think you're probably right Bill, the instructions for the decals are riddled with mistakes and they've caught me out again here. The back to front stars and bars now match with the wrong-facing bunny logo on the left fin...
Serkan Sen Posted September 22, 2022 Posted September 22, 2022 Looks pretty good (even with the reversed wing insignia 🙂 ). Wrong-facing bunny logo could have been corrected easily by placing the backside of the bunny decal 🙃 Serkan 1
ArnoldAmbrose Posted September 22, 2022 Posted September 22, 2022 Gidday Sam, congratulations on your completion. To me she seems an ungainly yet at the same time a strangely graceful aircraft. I scratch built one (crudely) in 1/250 scale many years ago, which obviously doesn't have the detail of yours here. It's a great model. Regards, Jeff. 1
