In July of 1943 JG 2's second staffel was reassigned from day fighter duties to a crash course in night fighting to hopefully stem the tide of RAF night bombing. None of the unit's Fw 190s were equipped with radar, as a set small enough wouldn't debut for several more months. Pilots were given a quick course in flying with only instruments and direction from ground controllers. Initially, the new Nachtjaeger were refinished in overall black, however it was quickly found out that it was nearly impossible and dangerous to fly in formation at night in such a dress. After a few unsuccessful missions, the Fw. 190s were refinished in an overall RLM 76 gray. In this scheme the aircraft flew for the next few months before actual radar equipped Focke Wulfs were assigned to nachtjaeger groups later that fall.

A quick little few-night build of the venerable old Academy kit that has been floating around in the attic for almost two decades. It was built with the help of an Eduard PE cockpit and a few other bobbles; brake lines from fine wire, antenna wire from EZ Line, et al. Finishes are mostly Vallejo Air Acrylics and the decals were provided by Owl, representing Lt. Detlef Grossfuss' charge.

I like that, there are some nice little touches here and there that you start to see the more you look.

Nice work. You’ve did a great job on the weathering to give the single colour paint scheme some variation.

Hi,

I really like what you've done with the paint job! Very hard to make a single color plane look like a beautiful model and not a kiddies' toy.

You have achieve a very, very good finish.

This is definitely not the most accurate FW 190 on the market, but it does look like a Wurger, and that is what matters.

Great show!

Thanks all, it was fun trying to get the most out of the single-color paint job. it was mostly done by doing some fairly broad black preshading, some smaller panels were completely black. then I carefully tried to individually paint single panels at a time, invariably some variation resulted. I then did an overall spray of thinned paint to make those variations not so stark. Some Tamiya powders and a sparing application of AK panel liners, finished up the rest. I think it worked.

Indeed. Comparing it to the Hasegawa and newer Airfix kits in my stash, there is no comparison. This Academy model certainly suffers from a combination of both heavy-handed and sparse detail here and there. It does build up quickly though, and it does look like a 190 at the end. I mostly decided to build it when I thought of how long I'd had it. I think I got it in about 2002, the first time I tried to come back to the hobby, only to be confounded, as my career in the Army was getting more and more busy. Figured 20 years of ownership was long enough...

Does anyone know any other planes from jg2 that went to night fighter duties?

As mentioned by Rainer, JG 2 set up a night fighter Staffel in mid-1943 in northern France. Slightly bigger than a 'normal' Staffel with fourteen machines. I built  A-6 'black 14' from the old Airfix kit with replacement white metal 'flat' upper cowl and vacform canopy.  Everything was painted in 76  except the yellow bits - including the engine fan, the exhaust staining....
