TimJ
This is the second 1/32 car kit that I nominated for the GB so it's time I got the thread started. The SSKL was a lightweight version of the SSK, which in turn was a short wheelbase version of the SS (Super Sport) and was powered by a supercharged 7.1 litre straight six producing 300hp. I built one back in the day and as I recall it was a nice kit. The small decal sheet has markings for Rudolf Caracciola's 1931 Mille Miglia winning car. Rabbit Leader
So good to see this Merc SSKL build thread, which now confirms that we have WIP threads for every one of Matchbox's car kit produced. From what we see, it looks like the same similar crisp plastic as the others with the usual chrome plated sprue included too. Cheers and best of luck getting this one done.. JOCKNEY
Wow, what a milestone for this GB, delighted to see this one joining the GB, completing our Car Collection Best of luck Cheers Pat
johnlambert
This was the other Matchbox car kit I build back in the 1980s or 1990s, it had some tricky bits like the front mudguards as I recall but looked pretty good when done. I'm looking forward to seeing this one built.
Brandy
Nice to see this one added to the list. I built one "with improvements" and finished last year. You'll find the build log in the car section if you want any tips on what needs improving. Ian
TimJ
I was surprised to see that it's been 8 weeks since I set up this thread but I've finally made a start. To begin with I filled in the sink marks on the body and fuel tank. DSCF3192 by timothy jones, on Flickr The wheels and exhaust parts had an appointment with Mr Muscle to strip the chrome. DSCF3196 by timothy jones, on Flickr Finally for this update the chassis has been assembled and the axles fitted. TimJ
A few weeks have slipped by but there has been some progress. The body has been primed and the wheels assembled after a coat of gloss black. DSCF3232 by timothy jones, on Flickr DSCF3233 by timothy jones, on Flickr The engine has been painted and assembled as well as the exhaust. DSCF3234 by timothy jones, on Flickr DSCF3235 by timothy jones, on Flickr There's still a fair bit to do but I'm hoping to get it in the Gallery before the GB finishes.
CliffB
It's nice to see that this one is still moving forwards Tim. Keep up the good work!
TimJ
Only a few days left so I'd better post an update of what's been going on since last time. A couple of weeks ago the chassis was painted and the engine fitted. Covering the red plastic was a chore but it looks OK even if there is still a slight pinky tinge if you look closely enough. The lightening holes in the frame were touched in with satin black paint. DSCF3255 by timothy jones, on Flickr The body was painted, fuel filler added and the interior painted matt black. DSCF3256 by timothy jones, on Flickr Over the last couple of days the dashboard has been painted ready to be fitted to the body, which has had the firewall and spare wheels added. DSCF3269 by timothy jones, on Flickr DSCF3270 by timothy jones, on Flickr The wheels and most of the interior have been added so I now have a rolling chassis. DSCF3271 by timothy jones, on Flickr Not a lot left to do but as I'll be at the Coventry show on Sunday it'll still be a close run thing to get it in the Gallery on time. TimJ
I did get this finished on Sunday but my laptop decided it wouldn't connect to the internet until after midnight so I missed out on a slot in the Gallery. ☹️ I decided not to finish it as the Mille Miglia winner and instead it's just an SSKL waiting to be picked up by its new owner. CliffB
It looks great Tim . I believe the Gallery re-opens in a week or two, so it would be nice to see it there.
