Please can you correct the unit identifier?  RAF units titles are presented as, e.g. 8 Squadron, 1435 Flight, 1 ANS, 71 MU, 232 OCU.  Sometimes a role letter is introduced, e.g. 1 (F) Squadron, 44 (B) Squadron and in a very few cases Roman numerals are used for the Squadron numbers, e.g. II (AC) Squadron, IX (B) Squadron and 192 (SD) Squadron.  Another tradition was to give squadrons names, 214 Federated Malay States Squadron being a good example.  Units were not formed in number order and there are many gaps in the numbering, for example the squadrons formed from escapees from occupied countries were numbered from 300 but ran out at 350 Squadron; in the early 1960s a joint RAF/RN squadron was formed for EW training and this was numbered 369 Squadron.  Squadron numbers from 400 upwards were for Commonwealth-crewed units such as 486(NZ) Squadron, 419 Squadron RCAF and 467 Squadron RAAF.  The Auxiliaries arrived on the scene in the 500 and 600 ranges, 500 County of Kent Squadron RAuxAF, 613 City of Manchester Squadron RAuxAF.  There were some anomalies such as special duties units, 515 Squadron 617 Squadron and 618 Squadron being good examples.

Sorry to have gone on a bit but the devil is in the detail; I’m currently (slowly) working on one of your Tempest’s successors, Avro Shackleton AEW 2 WR965, but also looking forward to seeing how you get on with Matchbox’s venerable mouldings.

  • TEMPESTMK5 changed the title to PK 23 1/72 Matchbox Tempest F6 , 8 Squadron based at Aden in 1948

Great addition Patrice and from experience this kit always builds up quite well. Sure there are a few refinements that can be made, however I'm sure you will enjoy it.

Cheers and best of luck.. Dave
